Hi everyone
Get together at Cafe Uno on Wednesday the 4th of February.
Please email me at lade01@optusnet.com.au if you can make it. It was a fantastic turn out last time.
The get together is for bandits and sleevers, as I said our goals are all the same.
Hope to see you there

Hi Nomes
haven't spoken in ages, glad to hear how great you are gonig with the weight loss. I to am very happy with my choose of the sleeve with Michael France, he is a fantastic doctor.
I have lost 33 kg since Jan 08 and am very happy, I may lose more and may not. I have gone off all my medications except for insulin, but this has reduced heeeeaps.
I love that I can eat salads, veg, meat all very easily, as I never ate sweet stuff because of the diabetes.
Anyway keep well

Hi Louise,
I chose the sleeve cause for me it was easier. I didn't want to have to worry about fills and sweet spots etc. Also, I am a very sensitive person (in the biological sense) and just knew that I'd probably reject the band. The sleeve has been WONDERFUL and I can still eat ANYTHING I want, just smaller portions. It also changes your taste for things. Believe it or not, I actually crave vegies!!!
How did u want to work it so we can catch up? Do u have to spend first night in ICU? All sleevers have to, just as a precaution, but I dont know about bandits?

Hi Steph,
Thank you for the reply... Did you have the sleeve or the lap band? What is the better way to go?

| Hi angledeeva - thanks for that I tried it last night and it worked! I suppose its still the habit of putting something in my mouth (mindlessly) so this did work. I had tried the water but it didnt help at all - this did. Maybe because of the chocolate. Thanks again. F |

Hi AH,
I'm nearly 3 weeks post op. I have 4 weeks on liquids so I'm becoming an expert..lol...not!
You can buy Ensure at the chemist. It is a powder that makes shakes. Also Sustagen shakes are sold in a can for you to make. I tried Sustagen mocha flavour tonight. Not as bas as the rest.
I posted a chickpea dip (runny enough to go up a thin straw) on the Liquids Phase thread. You can make the same dip with feta cheese. The trick is adding enough splashes of warm water to turn it thin.
I hate canned soup, so it has been homemade all the way. Minced veal makes a lovely broth. So does beef bones. I tried a whiting soup and added a splash of reduced fat coconut milk. Strained all of the above mentioned soups, of course.
Good luck!

Hello All,
I am now officially a Bandit! Had the procedure on Friday morning, and actually not feeling too bad at all. A little bit spacey - not sure if that's the aftereffects of the anaesthetic, or if I'm not drinking enough, and a bit sore, but much better than I thought I would feel this soon. I bruise easily so have a few beauties at the moment!
It's a bit odd to feel empty rather than hungry. I don't like Sustagen, has anyone any alternatives? I've been drinking homemade soup, yogurt, and jelly.

| Hi all - I need some advice please. I am still having problems with the night time nibblies. I get to late in the evening and I have been good all day then sit down to unwind and watch TV and the nibblies set in. I know this is a very bad habit formed when I ate anything but I cant seem to break it. How does everyone else avoid this or any suggestions as to what I can nibble without it adding weight? I have a bottle of water next to me and drink that but it's not helping. Any advice? Fiona |

| Hi Steph, I can highly recomend Mr Leong he is at Salisbury. He only charges out of pocket cost of $1,600 and your first consulation fee is only about $20.00, the $1,600 covers everything apart from the hospital stay of $250. You would be very wise to get health cover and make sure you shop around to get the best benefits for you. Goodluck with it and let us know how you go. Jellybean xx |

| Thanks guys. thats very helpfull. I really was at odds about the private health but now i feel totally assured that i must get it. I only wish i had done it long ago i didnt have to wait yet another year. Like everyone else the quicker the better. But i guess ive waited this long. whats another year of yo yo dieting.!! And under achieving my goals. But i will persevere as you all have as it sounds like its worth the wait. Your comments on the blog have given me so much courage. Thanks to you all. Good luck on your journy's and good health. I will stay posted as i have more questions im sure. Cheers Steph |

| I doubt you will find anyone who will operate on you without private health insurance. i think you have to have it from what i've heard. |

Yes,
Our health insurances pay $7,000 for the prosthetic (LapBand device) alone. They also pay all the additional hospital fees, theatre fees, etc. With Dr leong, I didn't have to pay the anesthetist. Cavalry hospital covers that.

Hi Shscissorhands. I was willing to pay for the operation and all costs myself and saw Dr Andersons team with that in mind but the answer was no as the hospital wouldnt go for it.
So I got private basic cover and waited a year and had the op on the first of Dec. I got the account from the health fund the other day showing what they had paid out for me and it was worth the money to get the private health insurance! The hospital cost me $250 up front and nothing more other than $14 for post op pain relief meds and Dr Andersons fees are comparable with others and better than some. His fees are currently $2600 and that covers all appointments, surgery, anaesthetist, follow up appts and fills.
But I do highly recommend private insurance - when I added it all up they paid out something like $9000 for me (if you really like I can get the papers out if you like and I can find them). The catch is the hospital - if something goes wrong they want the money up front so you will pay big biccies up front. My one night in hospital was costed at close to $4500 (If I remember rightly) and I was complication free. However I can't recommend Ashford Private highly enough - the staff were wonderful and the facilities great. Hope this helps! Fiona |

| Hi everyone, probably sounds like a dumb question but does anyone know if the cost is significantly more without private cover and what are some of policies people are under.? I am only just starting on this journey but have been thinking about it for about ten years now. ive never had cover before but from reading some old posts it sounds worth getting. ....But i dont want to wait another whole year. sooooooo anxious. |

If you are going to see Dr Leong and you are totally sure the surgery is for you go in there and let Mr Leong know you have fully researched this procedure been to info sessions and are totally comitted to the change in lifestyle.
This is what i did and i had my surgery date assigned to me on the first appointment. All i had to do was go and see Penny Taylor (the loviest dietician around) for a pre op group session then had my surgery. This will of course depend a lot on how Mr Leongs surgery schedule is looking. I have found by speaking to other ppl that he operates normally 3 times a week and CDPH and does 3 surgerys a day.
Hope this info is useful for you

Hi reallycurious
I like you am waiting for my first app. I have mine on the 27th Jan with Mr Paul Leong. I understand where you are coming from in wanting a surgery date booked asap. Seeing all these other people succeed and create a new life for themselves is so inspiring.
When is your appointment and with who? |

Hi Louise,
I am also a patient of Dr France. I had my surgery in July and am only 4kg to my goal although I went back to see him today too and he is really happy with my loss. I highly recommend him as a surgeon and as a person. He is absolutely wonderful. Good luck with your journey.
If you interested in meeting other sleevers we are having a get together on 30th January. I will bump forward the thread for you. There is another girl coming who hasn't had her surgery yet too.

| Is it generally a quick initial appt and then booking in for surgery.I see that some surgeons book you in for all sorts of activities before you get a date and I really don't want that if I can help it |
