Hi all, hope everyone has a lovely easter.....!!
Just a query, has anyone heard of insurance companies clasing stomach banding as plastic surgery and not able to claim for it until having the insurance for 2 years??
I have made my appt with Dr Leong for the 27th April and hope to have the surgery in june (hope to have a month off work) Looking forward to it all, bit nervous about the massive changes to eating habits, although i am a soup lover hope this doesnt change that for me lol But all for the best.....
Cheers all

Thanks Slim
I dont know how I do it. I do get upset sometimes thinking... why do we do this? society tells us you are pathetic unless your thin!! Then I realise I'm doing this for me and my kids, and if I have another 10 years of life with them, then going into surgery again and again is worth it.
Had lost home nurses visit this morning. Told her I dont want to see her again, until I have the abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) done in a year or so.
I'm over soup tho!! Lost another kg, so lost 4kg now in 10 days. |

Hi sunshine,
Thanks for your reply. It's still great that you've kept the 25kgs off. Your story is so interesting, bad for you I'm sure, but interesting and inspiring to me. You have been through so... much and yet you still had the surgery again and again!!! I really hope it goes well for you this time. Keep us posted.
Look forward to hearing a more positive story in the near future.
Luv and hugs,
Slim

My stomach worked it's way above my diaphragma (hiatus hernia) so the stomach could hold everything I ate all day, until I vomited. Which I did alot! I had severe reflux. I could even vomit a mouthful of water!
It wasn't from it getting stuck. I only ate 1/2 cup a food 3 times a day. As the band was sliding up and down, sometimes I'd vomit after 1 mouthful sometimes after 5.
I couldnt continue like that, so he then fixed it, but the stomach did it again (apparently common with the 4ml band). So he's put in the new version, which has these grip like things inside the band to stop it moving. |

| WHAT HAPPENED that you first had a 4 cc band and then had to go for an 11 cc band? I'm freaking out that something is wrong with my band and it came apart or something; I have a 4 cc and have had 2 fills of 1 cc each, and still don't feel restriction. I wouldn't do it over; it was too horrible the first time. I HATED being in the hospital, mostly! |

I lost 35kg, got to 3.5ml in my 4ml band and that's when things went bad. Up until then I had no problems at all... so thats about 14 months after banding. I had it done in Feb 2005. He then emptied the band... and boom 10kg back on, and I wasnt even eating that much. Think the body thought it was starving so it stored everything. He then stuffed up operation in September... lost nothing from then till now. So in 2 years, I've only lost 25kg.
Mrsnomes........... people will notice how you eat... you won't be able to hide it, if you eat in front of people. You eat like 1/2 cup or less of food, and up till about 6 months, its mush and vitamised... they WILL notice, and I found they asked questions. I wasn't even working! You'll go to parties, dinners and not be able to eat things... people do ask, so be prepared. I just owned up and told them all.
I see the Dr on the 26th for my first top up. |

Thanks for the replies.
I am being banded (hopefully) on the 25th June. I wanted to wait for my 2 weeks holidays from work because I am not sure if I want to tell anyone about it yet. I kinda of want to wait 12 months and just suprise people with how much weight I have lost (well thats my plan anyway and im sticking to it hehe).
Hope everyone is going great :D |

Hi sunshine,
Nice to hear your doing well. Congratulations on the fantastic weight loss.
Maybe he knows he stuffed up.... badly and it was his fault, so therefore he shouldn't charge you anything (for life as far as I'm concerned).
Hope everyone is well.
I'm happy happy to talk to anyone new comers included.
Cheers,

Of course new people are talked to. Well I will chat to you!! I'm pretty new here, just banded 2 years ago.
I wouldn't recommend banding, but in one it has changed my life for the better. I now can fit into clothes at the shops, I can't binge eat and feel alot fitter and skinnier!
Anyway good luck for getting banded. I had a really bad experience (I'm sure you can read about it a few pages back) so not a good one to say how good the operation is!!
That said I was re-banded last week, was sitting up in recovery and walking around within 2 hours!! Only had one shot of morphine after the operation and one lot of panadol but that was for the shoulder tip pain. |

Lili,
Dont bother with silly banding procedures.
Just make ninety per cent of your diet fruit and vegetables and
drink main;y ionized water (see google for supply shops )and slowly begin exercising.
Walking is good enough. Just keep doing a little more each day.
Weight gain or loss has nothing to do with calories.
It is all to do with high levels of salt in commercial foods, keeping weight on.
Just do as I suggest and you will be as slim as you want to be. Also spend a half hour in a sauna each day .

Ok Karen. He's never mentioned anything to me about charging. Maybe it's cause he realised it was his stuff up?
I see him again on the 27th were I'm guessing he's going to do the first fill again. I've lost nearly 4kg since last Tuesday, so pretty happy with that. I think having PCOS also slows down the weight loss.
Made huge lot of pea and ham soup last night, have to hit it with the stab mixer yet! |

Hi sunshine,
Sorry, should have put 'what he told me I could have for the gap ($1,000).Consultations and fills for 2 years'. Maybe it's changed or maybe that was what he decided for me I'm not sure. I know someone else who had it done and she was told the same thing as me.Hopefully after 2 years he still doesn't charge me anything!! that would be great.
Hope all is going well for you, take care of yourself.
Cheers,
Karen |

| I believe the optifast is meant to show that you are prepared to do whatever it takes, and also that you have the stamina it takes to change what you eat. Banding is never the easy way out.... it's bloody hard. People should never think oh it WILL work, it takes work and exercise and a life change FOREVER! |

Hi Tinks,
The loss of 17 kgs has been since beginning of Feb 07 when I started the optifast and was banded 16 Feb 07. Since the band it's a loss of 13kgs over 6 weeks.
Good luck with your banding! It will be well worth it!
Take care

Hello Adelaidians :)
I am new to this site and hopefully having banding in June under Dr Bessell. Thought I would pop in, say hello, and get some feed back from all those lovely people who have been banded. I look forward to reading your replies :) |

On Dr Bessells site it states that you should have a BMI of over 35 to be eligible for banding.....
What is the pre op diet (optifast) for?? I understand why the dietician is involved afterwards....
Obviously Dr Leong has really looked after you sunshine, that is great!!

I was always told you had to be over 100kg and have a BMI I think of 32+ to be eligible.
I could have gone to central districts but am glad I didnt as Wakefield have back up equipment needed (thank goodness)
To be honest, I'm actually wondering if the other surgeons are worth the extra $$. Dr Leong doesn't do pre op diet (optifast) or post op stuff (dietician) unless you do it yourself. I really think this would help with the banding, as on my own back I can't be bothered seeing a dietician, but I know it would help.
oh and slim, I'm way over 2yrs from banding and I've never paid another cent to Dr Leong (now had 5 operations). I had the understanding the gap was for life for top ups/future operations.
Had a bad day (ex husband) so only just had my soup for dinner!! Weird part is I'm hardly hungry which was how I was after initial banding. Makes me wonder if those other operations just weren't right!! |

Claire,
I heard that this was something that certain groups in the government were trying to push for, due to the obesity problems here in Australia.I haven't heard about it actually being put into action just yet. I could be wrong, who knows. Hopefully someone else out there may be able to help you.
Best wishes,

| Hi there, my dr has just mentioned to me about lap banding. Im really interested in it. I am currently 99 kg but would like to be around 70kg (pre-baby weight) I have heard along the grape vine that Medicare is subsidising the amount of this procedure. Does any one else out there know anything about this? Claire. x |
