Hi Kez
Fistly congratulations on losing 24kgs and good luck with your fill.
I am having an endoscopy today, like you, I am a patient of Dr Paul Leong. Not sure how he chooses who needs one or not, as I also had my gallbladder removed years ago.
I will have to remember to ask him. |

My brides maid sister had the surgery a year ago and has lost over 50kg. She is in Qld, and she pointed my to this site.
I rang my health fund, and I don't qualify without increasing my cover. Has anyone been impatient enough not to wait, and what is the expense that way. I do not want to wait a year. |

Kez, 24 kg! Wow!
I'm also looking forward to my next fill. Only 7 weeks to go...lol
I have a goal of losing at least 8 kilos by then. As I'm home sick today, I guess I will be starting that tomorrow or the next day? lol My gym membership is good until April.

No laband dieticians in the country. However, you may want to ring them and have a chat.

Thanks Jill, I didn't realise Mr Leong had changed his practices.
He can usually book surgery for 2-3 months ahead, however you'd normally wait 6-8 weeks to get your initial apointment.
Regarding the dietician. There are no lapband dieticians and they usually do group sessions anyway so you'd be with other people who don't have a band. It really isn't suitable. I have waited a long time now and I wish I had taken it more seriously before the banding.
Mr Leong is a very skilled surgeon, yes. He offers a basic package - other surgeons offering a dietician, psychologist, etc, on site. His dietician is Penny and she holds group sessions for pre and post banding.
My expectations of the band have been far superceded. I feel brilliant most of the time and have lost 25 kilos through both pre and post op methods. 15 kilos are post op over the past 8 weeks. Being committed to change your habits is very important as it isn't a cure all, but a wonderful tool.
I'm probably rambling. I've been unwell this weekend. Hope this helps.

Hi Sandra, I think Dr Leong now does an edoscopy before your lapband surgery. I Had mine done july 08 and I was the same as Cat no endoscopy surgery before hand it was done on the day. I think he does it beforehand now to avoid any delays on the day of lapband surgery. If you have the endoscopy before hand he knows what to expect when you have the surgey and if he needs to allow extra time he can. Nothing worse than waiting in your gown to go in an being delayed for an hour or more because somebody has a hernia that he didn't know about.
He also opertes at Central districts hospital at Elizabeth south. That is where I had mine done.
all the best Jill |

Thanks for that Cat. Wow, I am surprised it is so cheap. I was thinking thousands of dollars out of pocket.
How long ago did you have your surgery? Are you happy with the results. I do see Dr Leongs name on this site a bit, so I am guessing he is pretty good (haven't seen anything bad written). Apart from the health insurance, is there a long waiting period to have the surgery?
With the dietician, will I just ask the GP to do a referral. Are there no dieticians in SA country?
Your info has been most helpful. Thanks again.

Hi Sandy,
Before I forget, sort out the dietician beforehand. Before you know it, you will be banded and unable to see one in the country. Once banded, it is SO important you see one regularly. I thought I knew it all but honestly you do need one.
I saw Mr Paul S. Leong. Google him and you will see his website and contact numbers. He was the cheapest in Adelaide ($1600), provides quite a basic service, and has performed a high number of surgeries. 800 and rising. He operates at Cavalry, which is a nice hospital.
I saw him twice before my surgery, however that was because I saw him during my waiting period for health insurance. Many of the surgeons do an endoscopy beforehand but Mr Leong does it at the time of surgery.
He has you go visit him 8 weeks after surgery and then you visit every 8 weeks for a fill.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Cat
PS. The "PAT" scheme will get you some money back on petrol and accomodation. Ask your GP's receptionist about it. It isn't income based. |

Hi Cat,
I am just starting to look into lap band surgery, and I'm from the country. Just wondering if you can give me any advice.... one country person to another (like how many pre and post op visit etc). Who did your surgery?
Thanks for any info

Hi Serina,
I'm also a patient of Mr Leong. My first fill was last Friday. I was given 2 mls. I had an upset tummy for a couple days but then it settled down and went back to normal. I have seen some people say that their surgeon's think that 6mls is an optimal point for a fill / for the sweet spot.

Hi Serina,
either revert back to the liquid vitamins for a few days or I break the centrium in halves. If you have to take more than one tablet of anything at a time spread it out over 1/2 hour. Since I had my port repostioned and some more fill added I can't take all my tablets at the same time anymore. I used to be able to with out any worry but you don't want to get it caught as it can be very uncomfortable till it dissolves or comes back up!

Good morning everyone. I saw Dr Leong yesterday and had a fill, he put in 2.5ml. To me that seems like a lot in one go but it is only my second fill. How much does everyone here normally have put in?
I am having liquid diet for a few days again until i adjust but i am at work and a little anxious about taking my vitamins as i am worried they will get stuck (i've never had anything get stuck before)

| Hello. I've just signed up with Yahoo & am not entirely sure how it all works but here goes..... I've just been told about this site. I have my lapband booked for 12th March and would love to receive the recipes mentioned & would be happy to send feedback. I will try to attend your meetings - I'm sure they will be helpful getting through the first few weeks/months, as only the people who have been through the surgery can really tell you how it works. Thanks. Lyn |

Hi Sophie,
I go to both groups and they are all lovely people.
The next get-togethers are
Tues 3 March from 7pm - Women's Community Centre, 64 Nelson St, Stepney cost is $2 plus 40c for coffee
Wed 4 March from 6pm for dinner at Cafe Uno, Ingle Farm Shopping Centre, cnr Walkleys Rd (spelling?) and Montague Rd. Donna runs this and she often puts a reminder on one of the Adelaide-get-together threads on this site.
I hope you can come to these, as they are fun. There'll be fliers for the wellness seminars planned mid year there also.
