Hi Izanner
Just in reply to your post the easiest thing to do is go to the APRA website and download the info for "Release due to medical condition' and they explain everything that needs to be put in your doctors wording of their letter with particular emphasis on LIFE THREATENING CONDITION..... NOT READILY AVAILABLE IN PUBLIC HEALTH SYSTEM....
Do ensure that both your doctors put the correct wording in otherwise it will delay the processing because they put you back to the bottom of the list. I have just found this out as my GP put 'could lead to life threatening' as he would put life threatening so I was told to go back to my gp and get the correct wording. So now I have to wait another fornight before I hear anything.
Yesterday I went back to my GP and he still refused to put LIFE THREATENING so I was in despair but determined I went back to another GP who I had seen a few before and he happiliy wrote the correct wording.. so here's hoping
There is several threads on subject so you can find out more, I will bump them for you.

I had my op done on the Gold Coast at John Flynn Private hospital, surgeon is Dr Layani. Cost about $6500 out of pocket with private cover. This includes the anaesthetist but doesn't include the appointments with psych, nutritionist etc, just the operation itself with hospital, surgeon and anaesthetist charges.
Also don't forget to factor in your ongoing appointments for fills etc which I think are about 200+ a pop. |

Julie,
it also depends on how much over the gap the surgeon charges and the anaesthetist.
they all charge differently. cardiologist is another one, if you have to see them etc.

Julie,
If you have the item numbers you can phone Medicare and your private health fund yourself, then you will know for sure.

| P.S. Forgot to mention to check with your super fund as most will release the money for the operation as it is classed as medically essential and not cosmetic. |

| Hi guys, I'm being banded by Blair Bowden at the Wesley Private on the 22/10/09. I have private cover with MBF. I will give you a run down on costs for me to be paid prior to surgery:$100 Nurse Consultant(no rebate from medicare/health fund) Initial Consult with Surgeon $150 (Item no:104 _$67.20 rebate medicare/nil private health) Psych appointment(will try to go to mine and not the one they recommended) $170 for mine with $100 medicare refund or else around $286 for theirs so didn't bother to find out refunds LOL. Dietician $120 (refund nil from medicare/$60 private health refund) $100 approx for Optifast for 2 weeks (nil refund from either) Pre-op consult with surgeon $75 ($33.75 refund medicare/nil private health Item no:105) Surgical Fee $4500 (nil refunds from either) Anaesthetist $1200 (unknown refund until I receive itemised account AFTER surgery)$250 hospital excess to be paid on admission. After surgery an account will be sent for Surgery fees of $2286 or $1830 if I pay the account within two weeks (which I will!!! LOL Item no's:30511,51303) and have to wait to find out refunds from medicare/private health. The item no's MBF uses for the lapband/port are AW001/AW002 which is about $3630 which I will be refunded apparently from MBF as there is no-gap fee for it. So, all in all it's almost $8400 although the true cost will not be known until I receive refunds so I will keep you all posted. Then it's a matter of claiming out of pocket expenses on next tax return (all expenses above $1500 threshold) which is applied as a tax rebate and not a refund!! Best to check with private healh funds if you have it or hospital/surgeon's office if you don't. Hope this helps and god help me!!! LOL |

| There are some public hospitals that do it but the waiting lists are really long.... honestly i;m a single mother and just saved my butt off for 12 months and took out private health insurance as well. I ended up being $3500 out of pocket but its been worth every cent. There are different health insurances you can take out just make sure that they cover the proceedure and you are set. I know that HCF cover it on there basic package. Hope thats some help to you Natasha. |

Hi Karin,
Im in Melbourne but things probally wouldnt be that much different and also same private patient with no health cover, my total cost also anesthiset (SR spelling) was 13,000. That covers all visits and fees and fills and follow up are also included.
I applied to APRA to have my superannuation released early for health reason and had no problem getting money you need to have right wording on letters from DR and I also did a cover letter. Im 55 so I think that helped as I could have given up work and taken my super also, but I wish to continue working for many years.
I am to be banded tomorrow and from go to woo it has been approx 10 weeks.
Cheers

dhartin,
In some states it can be done in a public hospital as a public patient. The waiting lists are quite long however as it depends on the amount of funding the hospital has for public banding.

Hi Larry...
It depends on your private cover, which state you are in and also the surgeon you and your wife might chose. I do know in NSW it varies between $5,000 and $8,000 out of pocket depending on the surgeon. There is also no public list here, but there are in other states.
Good luck... she needs to read these boards to see the positive stories. There are also the negative ones, but they are outweighed by the good.
