Hi Jo
That isn't quite right. The medicare item number for banding is 30511.
Although technically the band can be classed as either cosmetic or health related, no surgeon would ever class it as that. It will be classed as bariatric surgery, which is not cosmetic.
Why?
It would be too expensive as neither medicare or private health pay benefits for cosmetic surgery, and the surgeons would loose money!
So, tell your friend to tell the insurers the item number above, and they will be able to happily tell him they will cover him, after 12 months waiting period (pre-existing ailment clause).

Hi, just want to find out if anyone has heard about Medicare not covering their share of bands anymore?
I was banded in March 09 with no problems. A friend of mine rang 2 Health funds here in WA to see about joining and he was told they would cover him for a band if Medicare covered the rest.
He rang Medicare and was told they do not cover banding anymore as its considered comestic surger????
thanks in advance

Hi, I copied this off another post if you require further info im happy for contact email me at digger.dolan@gmail.com all the best
Trish
the easiest thing to do is go to the APRA website and download the info for "Release due to medical condition' and they explain everything that needs to be put in your doctors wording of their letter with particular emphasis on LIFE THREATENING CONDITION..... NOT READILY AVAILABLE IN PUBLIC HEALTH SYSTEM....
Do ensure that both your doctors put the correct wording in otherwise it will delay the processing because they put you back to the bottom of the list. |

| Please let me know how you get the money out of Superannuation to pay for the surgery - are there some sort of provisions to do that? How do you go about it? Thanks heaps. |

Hi My name is Jay and i live in melb and am looking for a good surgeon to do my surgery. Can i ask a few questions about yours?
1. You chose Lap Band option was the Sleeve option available to you?
2. How was your experience with your surgery and surgeon?
3. Total recover time?
4. Time from start to finish of initial appointment to actual surgery?
5. How is your weight loss 2 weeks after the surgery?
Sorry to ask so many questions there are just so many of these doctors and i keep getting mixed answers.
Thank you for your time

Join just about any private health fund, phone them and ask them what level you need to cover you for weight loss surgery. do NOT let any of them talk you into taking out anything but hospital cover no extras are needed. You will have a 12 month wait for it to kick in. Use that time to research ALL forms of weight loss surgery as there are other options that banding out. Seriously research what one will work best for both of you. Both my husband and I have sleeves.
If you decide banding is for you KEEP your private health insurance do NOT drop it even if you decide to self fund. You just have to read the forum to see about slips and flipped ports etc down the track that may require follow up surgery.

Reeba,
Call around lots of Doctor's and get quotes. Then decide if you need private health insurance or not.
Alot of people use their (or their partner's Superannuation) to pay for the surgery.
If you have a pension of health care card this may help with the cost at certain hospitals.
Below is a few Brisbane surgeons that you can easily Google to get their phone numbers.
These are just the ones I could think of off the top of my head.
Doug Nicolson
George Hopkins
Ian Martin
Andrew Barbour
Mark Daoud
Phil Lockie
Justin Greenslade
Hope this helps,

I was banded on the 22/1/2010 by Dr Aly at Essendon Private Hospital (MIOS - Melbourne Institute of Obesity Surgery) and DID NOT have private health insurance. I paid $12500 for the surgery, and all my follow up care is bulk billed by Medicare. I also had to pay $200 ($110 rebated by Medicare) for the psychologist appointment, $90 for the dietitian appointment and $20 for the initial consultation. I had funds release from my superannuation with minimal problems.
Hope this helps |

| Hey Reebonser, I'm in Brisbane. I'm not banded yet (4 Feb is the big day) but Dr Douglas Nicholson at Sunnybank is my surgeon. I've asked around quite a bit and many people say how good he is. I do have private health insurance so he's told me to expect about $6000 out of pocket expenses. All MacLeod (like optifast) shakes pre-op are included in that cost. Apparently many aren't. |

Reeba,
It really depends what surgeon you are going to use and what hospital you go to.
Also whether you go as a Private or Intermediate patient.
Prices seem to range from around $17,000 down to approx $3000.
Are you in Brisbane??

| I paid about $500 for all my pre-op appointments with 2 x Seminars, nurse, 2 different dietitians, psychologist, x-ray's, blood tests, etc.... and a further $12,500 to the Lap Band Clinic... all paid in cash/cheque, with no more to pay. I got a few hundred back from medicare which i spent elsewhere on books/dvd's and soluble multi vitamins. So all up $13k. and a month off work! That reminds me, I go back to work tomorrow which is my one month bandiversary! So happy I did it too! :) |

HI - I am being banded by Dr Henry Hook in Orange, NSW and my OOP costs are $2500. This is discounted because my husband is also being banded and he is also being charged $2500. His regular price is $3000 OOP.
The main difference with him I see is that my fills are bulk billed FOREVER with him. Also any other surgery due to flipped port or slipped abnd etc are also to ahve no OOP expenditure. |

Quick update...I was wrong about the cost of my fills. (What I quoted was the cost charged to someone I know who goes to my Dr for fills but had their band put in by a different doctor.)
I have (happily!) since found out that all my fills for the first year are included in the initial $4950 I paid to him, after the first year the price goes up but it is Medicare rebated, somewhat. Can't recall exact figures. |
