My first day of Mushies, when I was on liquid these last 2 weeks I made chicken stock using necks so I strained it and striped the chicken of the bones and I have frozen the meat till now. Today I got a can of chicken and corn soup added extra chicken and put it all through the blender I was worried it was to thick so added a little stock. It was delicious had it in 200ml amounts i also did the same with vegetable soup to have tomorrow. Am I doing the right thing to start of mushies.

Lynnie, hmm can't wait for the variety of flavours that come with mushies. Must remember to take it slow and not drink with meals....and chew chew chew.
What is the "teapot" ...you have me curious?
take care

I have been on mushies this week and haven't had a problem yet. having been following the dieticans instructions pretty much to the letter even though am getting a bit hungry between but not too bad. Have been enjoying the family dinners, beef stir fry, vegie lentil curry and mashes vegies. I just make sure I blend them up well. It has been great getting some lovely different flavours.
Enjoy the mushies stage.
Cheers

Hi Tracy,
Just about to move to the mushie stage. It's going to be a bit nerve wracking working out what will go down and what won't. Can you tell me what the "teapot" trick is please (might be useful one day).
Good luck on your journey. Andrea |

Lynnie enjoy your return to food but take it slow unlike lil ms piggie (myself) . I decided i could have a salmon pattie for supper and didn't listen to my body that wasn't really hungry , just bored. I spent the next 15 mins PBing and my salmon pattie ended up down the sink.
So far i've had salon pattie, mashed sweet potato , scrambled egg, baked beans and a nestle choc dessert. All have stayed down barring my extra pattie.
Tracie that sounds a good idea except id be scared i'd swallow it. go me

mushies are baby food consistency. You can turn practically anything into a mushy if you have one of those hand wand blender thingies.... if not use a conventional blender.
you can take anything your family is eating and add a little more gravy or sauce or milk to it then put the blender through it.
When starting the mushie stage you should really start the first few days on what is considered a thick liquid then move onto a thicker mushie so that by the end of the mushy stage you have a few lumps in it ( not hard ones but like lumps of potato) that you can chew up.
Dont overload your new baby tummy take it slow and a spoonfull at a time.
It is very common to become very hungry during the mushy stage because of the swelling subsiding as you heal and also the fact that you tend to consume mostly carbs.
You can combat this somewhat by making sure you get enough protein into those mushies...so try to include, salmon and tuna and blended stewed meats as well.
Boiled mushed up egg with milk and or a little mayo is an excellent protein boost. |

Lite,
You'll find plenty of people that have lost more than 30% of their body weight. Look for the thread Julies arm pics. here's a woman that has gone from 156kg to 56kg in 18 months and is now undergoing plastic surgery. Look for Doreen, she's another one, there are many more here too.

BTW Cat, I ate three weetbix today, mushied with hot water then flooded with milk. Was delish but how on earth did I manage to get 3 in?! I definitely need a fill, everything just seems to be going right on through!
Pyretta: The steak & onion from the tin included very small, very tender steak pieces and sooooo much gravy. I barely had to chew to make it puree consistency...thought i would check other thoughts because even though it is puree like, a lot of these things would struggle to get up a thick straw... |

Thanks for your replies... It's good to know i'm on the right track with food choices. I'm feeling a bit down at the moment because i feel like i'm eating too much. I cannot express how LIBERATING it was when after surgery a cup a soup would fill me up...it was so great to feel full! I'd never realised what I was missing out on. It used to take a seriously bad binge to make me feel full...
I'll be seeing my doc on Friday so i'll see if he'll give me my first band fill. I hope so, i feel out of control though in reality i'm eating much less than i was pre band. Looking forward to starting 'real life' again after the mushies stage and seeing what works with the band.
I was told that I can expect to lose about 30% of my weight with the band. I'm really hoping it will be more than that though, anyone else have stories of losing more? I am doing it for health but getting smaller will be a fantastic benefit!
Thanks for the support and ideas :)

I can personally vouch for braised steak and onions, sweet potato and the soggy weebix. I have weetbix every morning and the trick is 1 weetbik then cover with 2 x the milk ratio (2 times the size of the weetbik). If that makes sense. Then you leave it to soak up for about 5 mins. Add honey...deslish!

lite,
risotto is fine
creamed rice and milk excellent
Are you pureeing the braised steak?
mashed veggies of any type are good
softened weetbix are also a good choice.
Your swelling has probably subsided which is why you aren't feeling full. Get back to your surgeon as soon as you can and let him know, he may consider giving you a fill.

Just wondering if any of you know if the following 'mushy
type foods are acceptable?
-mushy overcooked risotto
-creamed rice with milk
-tinned braised steak and onion
-mashed sweet potato
-weetbix softened...
is all this acceptable? Any advice would be helpful.
It's all going down fine and it seems as if i never feel full, must be going straight through?
Thanks,

Thanks girls.......just sometimes I feel out of control. Nothing like pre band thank goodness, but I do feel absolutely disgusted with myself with what is happening.
Sadly I can't have a fill for another 3 weeks as he isn't down my way until then. |

Surfie,
We must both be at the 9 week honeymoon over period? I am feeling the same as you. I have about 1 day a week where I go a bit balistic with my eating. Nothing like the old days, but yes I feel like an out of control junkie. I eat anything in my fridge or freezer. Yesterday it was 3 mini pops in a row, some sweet potato and then half a pita bread round. All spaced over a couple hours, but I felt so awful at how much I was stuffing away. I think it might be PMS related that I ate soooo much yesterday but it really isn't acceptable as far as I'm concerned. 5 weeks till my next fill appointment. I've also got only 3-4 mls like you. Get some more put into that silicon sucker, Surfie. I would if I could.

Surfie,
If you feel you are eating too much then make an appointment to see your surgeon dr fill doc and have a bit more saline put in. It is very easy to slip back into old eating habit until we find the right level of restriction. That's why it's a constant battle until we get there.

For the past few days I have been able to eat everything, and now it is scaring me because I might fall back into my old eating ways.
I might need another fill, as I only have 3ml in so far. |

Hi Cat,
that's disappointing because roast pork is my favourite. Can get it down OK now if I chop it up fine and mix with gravy but time will tell once I get to my 'green zone' if I can still eat it I guess.
Had my first fill today and ate pasta carbonara about an hour and a half later......no problems but filled up very quickly.

Tracy,
I've worked out that crackers and cottage cheese cause some sticking. Nothing comes up and out,but I need to move my arms around in order for it to go down properly. Atlantic salmon and pork have made me have a proper PB. Both times the food dislodged and went down but boy did it hurt and feel disgusting.
