Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
Mushies for me were:

breakfast: 1/2 cup porridge, or one of those small flavoured satchels of porridge and a chai latte.

snack: Pureed fruit, 1/2 cup

Lunch: Braised steak and veggies mix with baked beans or instant mashed potato with a chicken stock cup and cheese melted through it. Up to a cup.

snack: cruskit with creamed cheese and mushed up banana or strawberries.

Dinner: whatever the family was having blended.

I also made sure I was sipping on heaps of water during the day as well.

Im practically living on tuna and mash, weetbix, heinz baby food: spag bol (the best!) pumpkin ravioli and some blended chicken gravy zuccini and mash, and as of today cruskits. Getting a lil bored.

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
Mac Cheese is a mushy in the final stages of mushies, not when you just go onto them, and make sure you cook it for a bit longer.

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
just though I would write a quick post to say bye bye mushies stage - the most I will have to eat mushies now is 12 hours (after 12 hours of liquid after each fill)

that is much easier to cope with then two weeks. :-)

Sorry Louise ..that was badly written...steamed chicken but braised beef would be fine so a good stew and blitzed is great but use shin beef or shanks as rump steak in stews is nowhwere as good or has the flavour...good luck....Col

rkieseker

thekids kitchen meals are in the soup/microwave meals/noodles section. I got them from woolworths.

also re: cruskits - I've been eating cruskits under my dietician's instructions. The cruskits just disintegrate in the mouth and I've had no problem at all. Every dietician is different I guess as is every surgeon.

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
Hi Louise.....milky vita brits for brekky...good. Soup is fine but get a bit of body into it now, maybe some well cooked rice or pasta...well cooked. And now it is time to have some mushy veg...blitzed baked beans...really well cooked steamed chicken or beef or fish and blitz it till it is fairly mushy. You will be fine you know; so really; don't be concerned at all by a blockage. You just chew your food till it is mush and eat slowly and it will go down no worries.I know it is daunting and a worry but we read the bad stories of blockages; and really; most are nothing if they even happen at all. They pass through. You will get through this stage and next is the solid foods...which you will get through as well as long as you stick to the simmple rules of slow eating and chewing. Also make sure you are having your water allocation because it is really easy to forget that you must be hydrating.Good luck...Col

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
Ren

This is an interesting question which my dietician and I discussed on Wednesday. She said that the surgeons suggest times for patients to help the tummy heal but people do stupid things like eat meat after 3 days and wonder why they have problems like the band slipping - I didn't know such a thing could cause a slip that early. Surgeons have their suggestions about liquids and mushies for reasons - to help with the weight loss and help the tummy settle down with the swelling. I think and this is my opinion after a deep and meaningful with the dietician, you should stick to what the surgeon has said to do and make sure you are seeing/talking to a dietician about what you have done to make sure you don't have a slip or the port flip. Good luck.

Cruskits melt in the mouth. I reckon they could almost pass as a liquid!

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
I am just wondering how a cruskit fits in as amushie? That is food that would be bad for the tummy in my understanding and reading the info from the dietician about liquids and mushies.

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
hi Pyretta, i saw my dietician on wednesday and she gave me the list of foods that i was to have over the next few weeks. I've been to the footy today, i had a vita brit for breakfast, i had mushie soup before i left for lunch, a latte at the footy, and when i got home i had an egg nog cause it was easy and the rest of the family had bbq. I have probably had to much milk today. is it ok to still be having liquid when i should be having mush. and i know when i'm on solids, i will probably want to mush them. louise.

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
conrosm,

mushies are foods that are thicker than liquids but not lumpy like raw veggies or steak.

Mushies include things like mashed potato, well cooked rice and pasta, stewed fruit, etc.

Most people are put onto mushie food as a transition between liquids and normal food after banding.

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
all our surgeons have slightly different regimes but the same principals

if your newly banded then its usually liquids as in soup etc for the first 2-4 weeks depending on your surgeon

then progress to mushies

it isnt so much its going to affect the way you feel going onto mushies early....more the fact of the healing time needed for your tummy and new pouch iykwim

the liquids soups etc are to give time to heal....so there isnt any heavy food in our pouches therefore advoiding any problems with the healing etc

it can be a difficult time some of us had to do the soups thing for 4 weeks....groan...i remember it well

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
Hey Ren,

I was told 2-3 weeks on the liquid diet... although the morning after my op the hopsital gave me muesli for brekkie.. So im confused what should I be doing? The book my dr gave me also says that after day one I can progress to muschies and another he gave me says 2 weeks... Ive been having liquid and mushies and seem fine... although my muchies is mum getting some BBQ chicken, potato, peas, carrots and gravy and blending it into baby food (so yum!)... is this ok? I havent had an issue with it.

Also how much is the right amount to be eating, sometimes its 100mls, but its mostly about 50-80 mls...
