I am so upset with myself. I had promised myself that i would commit to all the requirements of the band...am on mushie stage and have eaten normal foods, i was just so hungry that i thought i would be fine, but then couldn't stop....can't stop crying...not sure if i'm pms'ing..but am so angry at myself...did so well during the day with runny porridge, fruiche, chicken soup and milo...got home and was just starving...mum made roast chicken so had the breast peice with potato salad...din't blitz just chewed it for ages....i could tell i was full, but i wanted something more so ate some tinned salmon with rice...now i feel sick...but nothings coming up...i'm suh a loser, ive probably stretched my band or ruined it completely...aafter the pain and everything i went thorugh to get it done and the broken promises i made to myself...
How can you tell if you've stretched the pouch?? is there anything i can do to fix the mistake i've just made...i really don't like myself right now...if anyones out there...pls help : ( |

Reposting:
mushies are baby food consistency. You can turn practically anything into a mushy if you have one of those hand wand blender thingies.... if not use a conventional blender.
you can take anything your family is eating and add a little more gravy or sauce or milk to it then put the blender through it.
When starting the mushie stage you should really start the first few days on what is considered a thick liquid then move onto a thicker mushie so that by the end of the mushy stage you have a few lumps in it ( not hard ones but like lumps of potato) that you can chew up.
Dont overload your new baby tummy take it slow and a spoonfull at a time.
It is very common to become very hungry during the mushy stage because of the swelling subsiding as you heal and also the fact that you tend to consume mostly carbs.
You can combat this somewhat by making sure you get enough protein into those mushies...so try to include, salmon and tuna and blended stewed meats as well.
Boiled mushed up egg with milk and or a little mayo is an excellent protein boost. |

Nat,
I am in Lalor Vic ;) We're probably within walking distance of each other :)
I've had my band since October 07 but only got it working in January this year. I have had 2 dodgy ports replaced, a few infections and managed to gain nearly 40kg in that time. But the weight is moving down now that everything is sorted.
I really do hope we don't have to cancel the Northern Suburbs get together, but with all the flu in the area it's best to play it by ear.

Nat,
No I don't think you have done any damage, but you need to try not to push it. Just stick wit the portion sizes you were given. Like I said, try increasing the number of meals by decreeing the number of calories in each. You'll get through this, we all do.
BTW Fantastic weight loss so far too!

hi pyretta,
thankyou for replying to my post.
so you dont think i have stretched the small pouch?
or had a slippage of the band. i only feel it when i am eating and it lasts a few hours after my meal.
doctors dont take the time to explain things .i can only contact the doctor for emergencies and i dont think this is.
i am really happy cause i have lost 15 kgs so far.

Jolie,
That pain is usually a sign that you've had a bit too much to eat at the one time.
Try and stick to the portion sizes your dietitian gave you, maybe increase the frequency of your meals though, Say have 5 or 6 lower calorie meals a day and see of that helps.

hi eliza,
i have been having the same problem too.
even though i am eating 1/4 of what i used to eat.
but i am sure you will loose lots of weight once the band is tightened.
you will be able to eat approx 4 tablepoons of food and feel really full. the weight will just drop off.
good luck |

I had my dietican this morning and can start mushie stage on Sunday.
Mandy my dietican has said 1/2 cup size meals and 6 a day. The reason for this being that your new stomach is the size of an egg and because the stitches are still not healed if you over stretch it then you risk the stitches damaging your new stomach.
The other thing he said was this stage is not about weight loss but healing and getting use to how you need to eat eg drink 10mins before meal, take 20 mins or so to eat your 1/2 cup, no drink for 30 mins after eating.
Another thing he said was that this stage is food, so if you can dip your fork into it and some stays on it then it is food, if it comes off inbetween the tongs then it is a liquid. Food should be 50% protein and 50% vegies/pasta/rice and sauce/gravy. Snack 1/2 cups are things like mashed banana and custard, berries and yoghurt etc |

Mandy,
The reason your dietitian hasn't put amounts during this phase is because they recognize that by now most of the swelling has gone down and you will pretty much be operating with the same sort of hunger that you had prior to banding, which for all of us is different.
Most people try to stick to under 1 cup of food during this time, and I suppose it depends on how calorie dense the food is to whether or not you'll have 3 or 6 meals a day.
I would have 3 meals a day and then make sure I got my fluids in in between. Considering you are struggling getting those it, that may be the way to go.
As for knowing when you are full. I just try to judge when I'm not hungry, if that makes sense. I don't try to feel full but I have my meal and then as long as I'm not hungry, that makes me satisfied.
One doctor in Melbourne used to tell his patients "It's not about how much you can eat but how little" Since hearing that it has helped me rethink the way I judge how "full" I am.

Hi all.
I too was gobsmacked when the scales told me that i had gained weight, although only 200gms, boy was i shocked. So it was great to read that this is quite normal, thanks Pyretta. I was wondering though, how much are you meant to eat during the mushie stage? My printout from the dietician didnt say anything about how much at this stage. My liquid phase was 50-110ml, is that the same with mushies? And are you meant to have three meals or 6 small ones etc?
I dont know about anyone else but i am finding it difficult to drink the 2 litres of fluids a day.
Also, just to be a pest, how do you know when you are full? I know the feeling generally, but i am not feeling full when eating. I had a whole cup of pea and ham soup yesterday and if i wanted to could easily have gone more.

Jenni,
A few people put on weight during the mushies stage and it is quite normal. you haven't stretched anything. a lot of foods in this stage are calorie dense and after the opti and liquid stages the body tends to store all the calories going in. It will settle with time.

Putting it on ahhh.
In the mushie phase i seem to be putting on weight. I am sticking to the precribed amounts and im now walking 1 hour a day and seem to be putting it on. Only small amounts but it is disheartening all the same. Im worried i may have stretched my pouch as im hungry. How do you know if you have stretched your pouch? what do i need to do? i'm trying really hard to stay at the same weight but struggling. |

Thanks for the tips buddy and magenta. I had slow-cooked lamb shanks last night and added a can of lentils to double the protein. Really nice but quite fatty unfortunately. I think I might invest in some protein powder too - been thinking about it so thanks for the tip.
Well as of Friday I really am finally on solid foods...so goodbye mushies! |

| Mee too fnqgurl, I went out and brought some protein powder to put on my breaky, I got it from a health food store, it's pure soy protein. I too didn't feel as if I was having enough protein, and my hair was thinning (common in LB patients)!! upping protein is apparently good for that, so I brought it for a little protein boost. 1 serve is 27g of protein. |
