hello,
i had surgery 2 weeks ago now and i havent been following the liquid and mushies stages.....i found after a week of surgery i could eat toast and other things if i chewed really slowly and well. i have vomitted up a few times bread and muesli bar and that pulled me up. so now im still eating pretty normal foods (mushy)still quite a bit 1 - 2 cups sometimes more until i get full. im a bit parnoid that i have strectched the upper pouch and am getting really worried. i feel like a failure not being able to follow instructions for my own good!!! i havent told my doctor.....really dishonest of me!!!
i cant wait to get a fill in 4 weeks time and start to actually eat less food and maybe even lose some weight in the near future!!!
does anyone else relate to me???
i think that the band is not going to work for me now because i havent followed the rules and the upper pouch is proberly stretched.
HELP!!!!!

Julie,
Drink while you eat can actually push the food through the pouch faster so you end up eating more and feeling hungry sooner.
The rule USED to be no drinking with meals but, because of the benefit of red wine in aiding weight loss, my doc allows a glass at night with dinner.

| Hi All, I am in the mushies phasse and I thought I had read somewhere here that you shouldn't drink when eating after being banded. However, my book from my doctor doesn't say anything about that. Can someone please enlighten me......thanks & Regards, Julie |

Julie,
A safe option is runny mashed potato, I loved mashed sweet potato during this stage. Sloppy porridge is good. Anything you really feel like you can blend up and then thin down a bit with either milk, stick or water.

| Hi All, I am starting on my mushies stage tomorrow, and I will admit I am quite nervous about it. I understand the baby food consistency, but can someone give me an idea of what they actually had on their first day/s on the mushies (please let it not be anything more sweet! lol). Regards |

mushies are baby food consistency. You can turn practically anything into a mushy if you have one of those hand wand blender thingies.... if not use a conventional blender.
you can take anything your family is eating and add a little more gravy or sauce or milk to it then put the blender through it.
When starting the mushie stage you should really start the first few days on what is considered a thick liquid then move onto a thicker mushie so that by the end of the mushy stage you have a few lumps in it ( not hard ones but like lumps of potato) that you can chew up.
Don't overload your new baby tummy take it slow and a spoonful at a time.
It is very common to become very hungry during the mushy stage because of the swelling subsiding as you heal and also the fact that you tend to consume mostly carbs.
You can combat this somewhat by making sure you get enough protein into those mushies...so try to include, salmon and tuna and blended stewed meats as well.
Boiled mushed up egg with milk and or a little mayo is an excellent protein boost. |

Thanks Pyretta
Went and saw my Doctor, and he told me feeling hungry was normal, which made me feel better. I just wasnt prepared for the hunger so quickly after surgery and had no mental defences in place for it.
Cheers

Walbira,
Sometimes hunger can hit like that after surgery so you are perfectly normal. Try to limit what you eat to one cup or under and concentrate on getting your protein in as it will help you feel fuller longer.
Your surgeon may consider giving you a fill at this early stage but you need to talk with him about it. You are still healing and the band still needs to knit into place.

HI everyone, I was banded exactly 8 days ago, and have been feeling fantastic. Absoloutely loving not feeling hungry or a slave to food. Then yesterday afternoon BANG! all the hunger came back, and am feeling so hungry. I was not expecting this so soon. Am I normal, and would the surgeon consider giving me a fill so soon? I hate the feeling of having no control again.

Bonnie,
Anywhere between half and one cup of food at this stage is fine. If you go a little over it isn't such a real issue until you start getting fills.

| I'm not inthe mushies stage, but I 've enjoyed reading this thread. I don't become a bandster until July 8th. a little nervous about what's to come on the road ahead, but nevertheless I'm looking forward to my new lifestyle. |

thankyou so much for your info I am on day 10 after lapbanding and on the puree stage as my dietician calls it and for the last couple of days have felt ravenous even after eating and what you said made sense I was beginning to think that he forgot to put the band on and I was getting cranky at myself for feeling hungry when people who have had it done say that they don't feel hungry anymore I thought I must be the exception to the rule as before banding I always felt hungry and I thought that this feeling would go away so thanks to your comments I am going to not fret and just get on with it
thanks again
cathy
who hopes that her hunger will get less and less |

kjnm81,
Most people don't notice the band has slipped unless it is a severe slip and completely occludes the stomach.

Chicky,
The pouch is just golf ball size but because all the swelling has gone down from the op and you haven't got much, if any. fill, the food would have gone straight through the band and filled you whole tummy, above and below, so really there is no need for concern.
Solid food is bad at this stage but only dangerous if it gets stick and starts moving the band up or down your stomach, I'm pretty sure yours hasn't done that simply because you didn't have any kind of blockage.
You aren't being a baby, you are concerned, it's only natural but I honestly believe you will be fine as long as you put it behind you and stick with the rules from here on in.

you will be fine chicky, just think positive. I am on the mushie stage, maybe look at different food for yourself for during the day. My dietician explained if you are eating something and dipped a fork in and if ran through the fork it is a liquid, if it stays on it is food.
Even though it is mushie, you want food not liquid. So maybe if you are at work you could take some left overs from your dinner the night before that has been blended and zap it in the microwave. Or take a tin of sandwich tuna and riccotta cheese. It might help this way with your hunger and with your yoghurt add blended fruit (not passionfruit).
All will be fine :) hugs |

Pyretta, i'm so worried...trying to stay calm but i can't beleive i just ate that much food! its crazy, i've been so good since surgery...but it was like i was possessed...i really really over ate...it would have been like 3-4 cups worth of food....the pouch is only meant to be a golf ball size...so where did the food go if i didn't stretch it??? Plus i meant to be on mushy...isn' the solid food really really bad??
Trying to stay calm, but feel so disappointed with myself..thank you for being there...your truly an angel..have read how many people you help everyday, i'm so thankful that your out there...i have reade your journey, so much strength after al you've gone through on your journey..am sorry for being such a baby, but i pray that my band hasn't been damaged...is there any way for me to check on the size of the pouch?
thanks again..
stressed out and stupid chicky |

Chicky,
First of all calm down. I can promise you you haven't stretched your pouch.
Soem of us stuff up at one time or another, we are human, just don't beat yourself up over it. It makes it 10 times worse.
What you need to do now is just give your stomach a rest. No more food for the rest of the night and if you need to drink, just small sips at a time.
If you are in pain in the morning then talk to one of your surgical team but I think you should be pretty okay.
Put it behind you, tomorrow is a new day and you won't make the same mistake.
