Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
robin,

There are a few different methods to try and shift a blockage. One is to drink down some coke or other fizzy drink and hopefully the bubble will hit it and dislodge it. Be very close to a sink or outside when you do this. Another one is pineapple juice, just sip a little and hopefully the enzymes in the pineapple with break down the blockage. Some say milk works for them. I find Coke Zero works for me, if the bubbles don't move it then the acid in the cola breaks it down. I always have a can in the fridge. My kids call it mums draino.

Best of luck but if you can't get fluids down today you may need to go to a hospital for IV fluids until you can get some fill out. That will usually remove any blockage and reduce the swelling that the blockage has caused.

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
I am hoping someone on here can help me. I had my first fill 2 weks ago. I am almost 8 weeks post op. Surgeon suggested a week of fluids again, after fill, which I did. Now I am back on solids again, but I think something is stuck. If I even drink water, it comes straight back up. Soup also. I have had NO vomitting or nausea all the way through, until over the weekend. I am feeling sooo miserable, and my surgeon's office is closed, so I can't phone them for advice. Any idea how I can shift whatever is stuck there?

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
Thanks D, I weighed myself again this morning and it is on the same as yesterday morning, so at least no further gain :) I have started walking this week after going back to work, and get off the train at North Melbourne and walk to work in the Docklands (approx 25min each way). It is about as much as I can manage right now, but when my legs get used to this walk, I will start walking from home to the station too, which would add another 20min x 2 a day. I have a sore foot, which I am going to the doctor about on Monday. It is really bothering me, mainly about 15 minutes into a walk, feels as if I am walking on bone (my 3rd and 4th toe). Have checked the internet to see if I could find something that fits, and the symptoms of Morton's neuroma fits pretty much exactly. Hehehe, but I am not going to take my own self diagnosis as being accurate, so better get it checked out, and leave it the experts to do the diagnosis. Good luck to you too with the liquid stage. It is a journey of new learnings, that's for sure, a lot of stages to go through.

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
Hey Qui,
I've been told that you should have around 2 and a half to 3 cups of food a day and from what I read it soulds like thats about the amount you are having so I wouldn't stress. Maybe start some walking to you feel a bit better about eating. I am not yet past the liquid stage so can't tell you my diet but I know it will be basically the same as what you;ve described. Keep up the good work.

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
Yes well the dietitian did say that I could possibly gain weight on mushies, so I am not really stressing about it. I think that I might be getting my first fill next Wednesday. I have not eaten heaps, only about what is recommended, but I have been hungry. Today I had 1 weetbix with a lot of milk for breakfast, a pear without skin mid morning, a frittata (home made with 1 small potato, some carrot, and 2 eggs), a small yoghurt mid afternoon, and a small bowl of home made meat and vegetable soup for dinner (it is thick soup, almost like a stew, with heaps of meat, carrots, swedes, celery, one onion and a little bit of potato (asked my husband not to put too many potatoes in)). I don't think this is a lot of food, but maybe it is too much.

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
Hi qui,

I had my op on 20th July and the past week or two (on mushies) I have been absolutely ravenous (yesterday got my first 1 ml fill - so hopefully things will be better now). However, when weighed at the docs yesterday I had put on 1 kg in the last week - I was so despondent! Then the nurse measured my waist and I had lost 9 cms, so I cheered up again! I think that until I get the right amount of fill I may be a bit up and down, so am going to try not to get too hung up on it (perhaps easier said than done!).

Regards,
Julie

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
qui,

it'll be the carbs that are doing it. I am trying to live as carb free as possible at the moment. My doc's theory is if you can kill it or grow it you can eat it, otherwise it's a no go. Not an easy motto to live by but I'm trying.

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
Iiiikkkks... after 4 days on mushies I have gained!!! not much, but still... I guess we lose a lot of fluid when on Optifast high protein/low carb diet, so it is natural to gain (fluid) when starting eating more carbs again. If so, then that should level out after a while (I hope), or maybe I am eating too much. I don't think I have.

the eye of a lamb cutley - cooked and then wizzed separately.....went really fine and then I added the zuchini and potato and a tsp of light philly and wizzed all together...delicious..... it made 3/4 of a cup and i was full. So nice to taste meat again.

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
I have just started on mushies too, and the dietitian said I could have anything that is soft enough to cut with a spoon. She also said it was not necessary to blend things fine if already soft, but to chew it well (I guess it should be soft enought so that it just about falls apart in your mouth). I also have to take vitamin tablet, she said to cut them in 2 before taking (Centrum). Next week I can add some foods that need more chewing provided this week goes allright.

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
Is anyone else eating as much as me. I have a 10ml band and was banded 2.5 weeks ago. I'm now on mushies but can fit more than i would likwe to be able to. Doc tried to do a fill on me a couple of days ago but my tummy is still way too swollen. I now have to wait another 2 weeks and have it done under x-ray. How does everyone else feel?

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
Reposting:

mushies are baby food consistency. You can turn practically anything into a mushy if you have one of those hand wand blender thingies.... if not use a conventional blender.

you can take anything your family is eating and add a little more gravy or sauce or milk to it then put the blender through it.

When starting the mushie stage you should really start the first few days on what is considered a thick liquid then move onto a thicker mushie so that by the end of the mushy stage you have a few lumps in it ( not hard ones but like lumps of potato) that you can chew up.

Don't overload your new baby tummy take it slow and a spoonful at a time.

It is very common to become very hungry during the mushy stage because of the swelling subsiding as you heal and also the fact that you tend to consume mostly carbs.

You can combat this somewhat by making sure you get enough protein into those mushies...so try to include, salmon and tuna and blended stewed meats as well.

Boiled mushed up egg with milk and or a little mayo is an excellent protein boost.

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
Hi All

I am not sure if this question has been asked and I feel a little strange asking but hey, I am going to ask anyway:

"If the mushies stage is like baby food, why not just buy baby food"

Is that gross or not? :o)

I'm on day 1 of opti but am looking forward...

Cheers

Ali

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
Chicky,
I did similar thing to you...maybe worse. I ate 2 toasted cheese sandwiches I was so hungry. I was just starting mushies. I felt bit ill as my stomach was so full and was worried sick about stretching my pouch or causing a slip.
I went back to soups for a couple of days to 'rest' my pouch. The Drs practice manager told me to add more pureed meat so I was getting more protein and so hopefully not feel so hungry. Good idea, as mentioned previously, to take cottage or ricotta cheese etc to work.
3 weeks on all is well. No damage sustained thank god.
We are all human and it is hard, for a lot of people, when
the band is empty and you feel so hungry, not to shove the wrong thing in your mouth. You'll be fine!

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
Hey guys. Sounds really stupid, but I found an old family circle baby and toddler food cookbook in a recent throw out we had.

And on Thursday, ( I go to mushies that day) I plan to have Cottage cheese and chicken with a bit of avocado and tomato blended in.

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
Hi all,I was banded 10th July, and don't get my first fill til the 6 week mark. I saw the dietician last week, ( 3 weeks post-op) and she has told me that I can move on to the thickened/soft diet, and if I feel confident, I can start small amounts of " normal" food. I have lost 14kg, and haven't had any nausea or vomitting. Dietician, ( and I) are so happy with the current weight loss. I know it won't continue to drop so quickly, but it's a heck of a start.I am so glad I ent through with it. I should have done it 20 years ago, lol. Cheers, Robin

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
nangala,

What is done is done and you can't change that. Yes most people could eat normal food from about day three but the reason we are told not to is so we don't put stress on the band while it is all still healing into place. Stretching the pouch at this stage is a minimal concern, moving the band from where it was positioned is more of a worry.

Instead of thinking that you have blown it, try going back to the rules as of now. Stick with mushie foods and only one cup at a time. fill up between meals with water.

I would ring the doc and tell them that you are struggling sticking to the one cup of food rule and see if you can get in for a fill sooner. I'd also be honest with them about hat I'd already done.
