Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
Hi there, I'm on the pre op optiyuk at the moment so haven't even thought about the mushie stage. How long do you have to be on it before you can eat solid food?
Thanks, Kez

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
you also have to take into account that if you eat too little your body will hang on to everything and slow your metabolism to conserve its self.... its very complex, stalling in the mushie stage is a swine...but normal it will pick up again around the time of your first fill then slow again till your next...dont know why but it does.

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
it's very interesting isn't it? i'm the kind of person that has always thought energy in less than energy out = weight loss. i never gave much belief to the old 'starvation mode' line of thinking...

when i was banded I was also thinking - 'well I won't be putting on weight in the mushie stage, that's just ridiculous'.

after surgery, while on liquids, i dropped 4kgs in the first 4 days... then for 5 days - dropped nothing. i was still on liquids, but had thickened up to blended soups with meat etc. i was CURSING! then when i started mushies, same deal. i did lose 1.5k the first week, but then that has stablised as well and again i've not dropped in the past 4 days. i've not put on, but i've not dropped. on top of this, i am exercising almost every day - 2.3km walk.

so now i've changed my thinking and i really do believe your body has to adjust to the amount of food you are eating (or not!) before it begins to allow itself to shed weight. if this theory is correct, i should start to drop a little weight in the next few days. we shall see!

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
not everyone gets the weight gain from carbs so it might not effect you but if you are a diabetic or insulin resistant it most definitely will

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
its all about the insulin levels and the gi of foods... which convert over very easily to body fat where as protein doesnt raise the insulin levels in the blood. Insulin is the fat making hormone...hence why most type 2 diabetics are over weight...the weight is usually enhanced by years as an insulin resistant indovidual causing weight gain and then the developement of the diabetes.

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
Yeah, I don't really understand it. Regardless of what shape the food is in, if its only 1500 calories, its going to lead to weight loss.

Then again, if I go out and blend mcdonalds / lasagne etc it probably wont work. But if I do that, my flatmates will admit me to a psychiatric hospital! Bless them.

not me.. I just started to stall in the mushies...also around day 3 the hunger and cravings return with a vengence.

I stuck to more protein than carbs dont know if that stopped me gainig...I had things like salmon mashed with mayo and boiled egg also boiled egg and curry and mayo etc.

Just wondering how many people put weight on during the Mushie phase? It's certainly not something I intend to do.

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
we add onion to the calui patties and use vegetarian bacon so the daughter will eat them. they are so yum I am yet to find anybod who doesnt love them.

250grams of cheese when you divide it into the at least 8 serves you will get from that soup makes it not bad at all, as it really is the only calories in it :)

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
I made a really yummy vege version of a shepards pie tonight so I thought I would share

Ingredients:
1 medium onion finely diced
1 crushed clove of garlic
1 can brown lentils
1 can crushed/diced tomatoes
1 tea spoon dried oregano
1/2 cup frozen peas

Method:
- Brown onion & garlic in a small amount of olive oil
- Add tomatoes and allow to simmer
- Add lentils and allow to simmer a while longer
- Add peas and simmer until cooked
- Season with oregano & salt & pepper to taste

Bake in a moderate oven topped with mashed potato done in your favourite way (a dryer version works best I think) and top with a little grated tasty cheese. Yummo!

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
Wouldn't a wheel of Brie make that pretty high calorie? Lol I guess if we're not eating much of it fair enough.

Applesauce,
I searched back on this thread last night and found some other recipes which I wrote down. I ended up cooking for tea tonight cauliflower patties and they were really delicious. Even my daughter loved them and the one I dropped on the floor ...... the dog loved and I think he is still licking the floor clean so I won't need to wash it LOL.

1 litre of chicken stock, boil the cauliflower in it then whiz it all up and add a wheel of brie cheese :)
if you want a change you can use half and half cauliflower and brocholli :) I am told a packet of french onion soup in there works great as well even if you do not want to add the cheese to that one :) I have also heard of boiling the cauliflower in chicken stock then poping it in a couple of tins of skinny cream of chicken soup and buzzing it down and not using the cheese. My mum likes that one :)

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
I'm 2 days from the Op so have gone from looking forward to Liquids to looking forward to mushies!

I see these 4 weeks as a great way to kick start the weight loss and continue the work the Opti has done, so I'm steering clear of icecream & custards etc that have a lot of calories in, and am making sure that my nutrition is kept nice and high. That seems easy to do through some good food choices.

I hope the message further down the thread about blending McDonalds is a joke - if someone's done that, I really hope they see a Psychologist - because if you're doing it in week 2, its a total abuse of the band!!

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
okay, i made it a little different to the thread here but here it is...

1 ltr chicken stock
1 large cauli
1/2 onion
125gm wheel camembert cheese

chopped cauli & onion & boiled in chicken stock until really soft. added salt & black pepper (and optional chilli flakes).

cut cheese in half to make 2 wheels, put them in the boiling mix - stir a few minutes and when the cheese is melted lift out the skins with a wooden spoon.

stir a bit longer... then tip the lot into the blender & whiz for a minute.

serve with more cracked pepper on the top! so YUM.

so - if you want to try the macaroni - just boil up a packet of that, drain & put back in the pot, tip the blended cauli soup over it... sprinkle cracked pepper and a little sprinkle of tasty cheese on top!

very easy and so nice!

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
First day on mushies for me.

Since I loved the cauliflower soup from the liquids stage so much, I had an idea...

Made the cauli soup, boiled up a packet of macaroni, and used the soup as macaroni sauce! Was SENSATIONAL!!

Cauli Mac Cheese! The whole family loved it!

Went down fine for me too, I cooked the pasta till really soft, and just chewed and chewed. Yum!

Re:Mushies Stage Reply to this message
Basher the mushie stage is notorious for reving up the hunger it will get a ton better once you move onto solids. They seem to sit in the pouch longer as they move slower past the band... just make sure you take pea sized bites and chew them at least 20 times.. it seems to help you fill up much quicker on less and makes the hunger not return as quickly.
