Hi Chris, I'm afraid I've been a bit naughty with this whole liquids stage. I actually ate couscous for tea last night. I ate it very slowly and chewed and chewed and chewed and it went down just fine. I've also had a couple of pieces of chicken which I've chewed up very finely. I don't feel any restriction at all and I'm soooooo over liquids....although give me liquids over optiyuk anyday!!!!
Do you think I should be a bit more rigid and stick to the old liquids for another 5 days when we can have mushies. I'm probably rushing it a bit aren't I??!! Impatience is my middle name!!! I haven't lost any weight and if anything I've put on about 2-3 kgs. But I'm not stressing coz this bit is about healing not losing.
Anyway, catcha, Kez |

| I have found the scrummiest mushie mix. Steam/microwave cauli, broccoli, zucchine, pumkin and carrots, mash down and stir through some grated/shaved parmeson cheese then add some sundried tomato pesto (leggos?) and some light cream and whizz to appropriate consistency. YUMMM !!! |

Hi debs22
My surgeon does the same - 4 weeks on liquids, 4 weeks on mushies add that to 6 weeks on opti - that all adds up to 14 looooooooonnnnggggg weeks before a decent looking plate of food!!! I'm on the first stage yet.
We can be mindless together.

| If you are exercising every day, measure yourself instead of weighing yourself. You could be building up muscle which weighs more than fat. |

Hi there
How lucky are you guys for being able to have mushies at 2 weeks. My doc keeps us on liquids for 4 weeks then adding thickness to food and progressing to solids by 8 weeks. Will be out of my mind :( |

| I am two weeks post-op as of yesterday, and was put on mushies on Tuesday by my dietician. So, pretty safe to say that for most people, two weeks post-op = mushies. |

ive lost nothing on liquid and now im offically on musies who knows. the dietitian i saw today said cos the the extra in my operation ( ahesions with stomach, liver AND bowel, plus the hernia repair) that my body is basically using all it has to heal myself.
i alos have bowel issues which is a killer. so although im disspointed at nil, weight loss i do understnd it.
alongwith being on musies i have to be on blands for a while.and none of the foods which cause my bowel to go spastic - 9 cooked vegs too much fibre chick peas etc ) so its gonna fish and pottoa and ricota cheese for me.but still it will have soem substance and should fill me up a bit more.
now ive had juices for two weeks it will be hard to give up cos i love them so much,.
anyway. im now a mushie i guess offically :D
hi too all reading this :D |

hmmm...if you have access to a fridge then heaps of fresh vegies....n do you have a blender or one of thosr stick type ones...they are a godsend for mushies and also for doing meats later down the track
for the microwave you can cook all ur vegies well in one
and some of the packet mash potatoes are ok in taste these days too...mash potatoe n gravy are good at the start
i buy the liquid gravy these days lots of good flavours in them
hope that helps a bit

I get to go on mushies on Tuesday, and I am going INSANE on these last few days of liquids.
I was hoping to have a small portion of really soggy lasange once I get onto mushies.
Thoughts? What else should I stock up on that doesn't have to be prepared? I live in a college so I don't have a kitchen, only a microwave and fridge. |

Hi there, I'm on the pre op optiyuk at the moment so haven't even thought about the mushie stage. How long do you have to be on it before you can eat solid food?
Thanks, Kez |

| you also have to take into account that if you eat too little your body will hang on to everything and slow your metabolism to conserve its self.... its very complex, stalling in the mushie stage is a swine...but normal it will pick up again around the time of your first fill then slow again till your next...dont know why but it does. |

it's very interesting isn't it? i'm the kind of person that has always thought energy in less than energy out = weight loss. i never gave much belief to the old 'starvation mode' line of thinking...
when i was banded I was also thinking - 'well I won't be putting on weight in the mushie stage, that's just ridiculous'.
after surgery, while on liquids, i dropped 4kgs in the first 4 days... then for 5 days - dropped nothing. i was still on liquids, but had thickened up to blended soups with meat etc. i was CURSING! then when i started mushies, same deal. i did lose 1.5k the first week, but then that has stablised as well and again i've not dropped in the past 4 days. i've not put on, but i've not dropped. on top of this, i am exercising almost every day - 2.3km walk.
so now i've changed my thinking and i really do believe your body has to adjust to the amount of food you are eating (or not!) before it begins to allow itself to shed weight. if this theory is correct, i should start to drop a little weight in the next few days. we shall see! |

| not everyone gets the weight gain from carbs so it might not effect you but if you are a diabetic or insulin resistant it most definitely will |

| its all about the insulin levels and the gi of foods... which convert over very easily to body fat where as protein doesnt raise the insulin levels in the blood. Insulin is the fat making hormone...hence why most type 2 diabetics are over weight...the weight is usually enhanced by years as an insulin resistant indovidual causing weight gain and then the developement of the diabetes. |
