San,
Moving up to 1 cup of food should be okay but remember to take your time eating and chew everything!
If increasing the amount concerns you then try having four meals a day instead of 3.

Hi Everyone,
Yes it seems that each doctor has their own set of rules. I was banded on the 12th Nov and my support told me I can now start on soft foods. I have only been on mushies for a little over a week, today being day 17.
I am a little nervous about moving onto the next phase as I read that a lot of other doctors recommend a longer period on mushies. My support told me that I should be now moving onto more 'normal' food. A couple of days ago I ate a little piece of chicken and rice, all went down okay. After I ate that I was worried I had done the wrong thing and phone my support. She said if it went down okay not to worry, if I wasn't sick then it was okay.
I have read so much and am now totally confused, I just don't want to do the wrong thing. I am starting to feel a little hungry and find 1/2 cup no longer satisfies me. My first fill is on the 12th Dec.

I have been on Mushins for almost a weel.
Brekkie is usally a weet bix or up and go. For lunch I made a macaroni beef thing from teh Annette Syms cook book and pureed it and added a little bif of light cheese for extra protein.
Dinners usually consist of pureed chicken and vegies and for a snack it is just a small tub of yoghurt or custard. So far it is keepign the hunger at bay and since my first fill isn't till January..I am hoping it stays that way for a while :)

Thanks everyone for your comments/advice.
I've been having: breakfast: up & go, or an opti, or poached eggs, or weetbix. Mid morning: Small puree fruit containers or yoghurt. Lunch: Mashed potato & tuna or baked beans mashed or soup. Afternoon tea: same as mid morning, maybe a latte. Dinner: Fish mostly, as I find it goes down better, and puree veges. Yoghurt or icecream later sometimes.
Would love to try a cruskit with marmite, but I'm frightened too!
I think I start soft food next week, that would of been 2 weeks on mushies. As I'm not having a fill till the 10th December. It's very scary at first!

Hi all, I'm on my 2nd week of mushies also, but have been really enjoying it! I know, sad isn't it? I made up a huge pot of veges, and mashed them, put them in little containers and in the freezer, then i've made up a quite thin tuna mornay, and have put it on the veg like a sauce... mmmm. I also made a sheperd's pie, just mince in gravy with the mash on top, that one was a winner! scrambled eggs, stewed fruit and custard, porridge, lentil and vege soup (lentils make it really thick and creamy). I was told that cruskits were good to eat in the mushies stage, as they melt in your mouth, but i've been a bit scared to try that yet. Hope that gave you some more ideas.
Cheers,
Renae |

I am on my second week of mushies also but I really shouldnt be giving advice as I have been eating things I probably shouldnt be. Tonight I had rice and curried sausages and it went down perfectly fine. Though I did chew the hell out of it.
One thing I have learnt from this is that all surgeons are different when it comes to what you can eat in these early stages. My surgeon said anything that you could squeeze in your hand and would mush out the sides.. but my friends surgeon said anything you can mash with a fork.. which is pretty much anything.
Sorry I guess that doesnt help you. What have you been eating so far? Maybe I can give you some ideas. |

Gripe away,
But also realize you can increase your protien which should help you feel fuller longer. For a mushie protien meal, get a tin of baked beans and a tin of braised steak and vegies and wizz them together with a hand blender. Put 1/2 cup in a microwave proof bowl and zap for 30 sec. stir and zap again. full of protien and fibre.

I am so hungry!!! I eat my 1/2 cup worth and its not really enough. I basically stay hungry until I can have a drink and then fill up as much as I can on fluids, but there have been a few times where I've eaten more cause I'm just so really hungry now. I think my tummy has settled down and any swelling is gone. Also, any wind still in my gut is just about all gone now.
No replies needed, I just wanted to gripe. |

Hi Kara,
well, I haven't been following anything in particular, but I do have oatmeal every morning for breakfast. We have a box of assorted flavours, so each sachet is a perfect breakfast portion size.
Otherwise, to keep it simple, I've just bought baby food and added cooked chicken or ham, salt and a few spices to it. I've also found adding something like coconut milk gives a wonderful flavour.
For snacks I have either yoghurt, custard or stewed apples with custard. |

| Hi everyone, I'm 9 days banded and will be moving into mushies next week (thank goodness), but just wondered from those who are already in mushies, if you could please give me a sample menu of what you are eating on a daily basis, ie, breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner etc. With thanks, Kara |

| If anyone's interested, I went shopping on the weekend at Woolworths/Safeway and picked up 3 containers that hold a 1/2 cup each. I figure they'll be perfect for when I go back to work this week. |

Hey emms I am going through the mushies stage again but one thing I found that is good.
Mash potatos and then add some cambells tom soup with cream even better if your family makes meat balls (I recommend turkey) then you can use the sause over the potatos and that way you get the flavour from the meat balls in the soup and cream mix! |

Hi everyone,
Not quite 2 weeks out, but was given the OK to move onto mushy stage by dietitian. Seems the surgeon primed my band during surgery, which can happen sometimes, so I have to be careful of how much I eat. I'm supposed to have 1/3 cup 6 times a day because of the early restriction. Have to say, with thinner stuff (like custard), I do tend to do the full 1/2 cup. lol
Basically, I'm getting baby food and adding protein, salt and some spice to it. I got a veggie lasagne one yesterday and added chicken. OMG! To have 'real' tasting food again. Just fantastic!

Salina,
what you are describing is very common and it can sometimes take numerous fills to feel any restriction at all.
Check out the fills thread: http://au.messages.yahoo.com/lifestyle/lap-band/29 852/ it might help.

The bacon and eggs comment comes from the fact that I've been on Atkins for the past 8 days..lol
And yes..I haven't blended anything before so I really have no idea about texture changing the taste of food. I do know that I love smoked salmon but hate the chewy bits that you sometimes get. Does that count?? :)
When I have a low fat, carb diet my blood sugar drops and drops. I feel much better on a ketosis diet.

giggling here at the blended eggs n bacon
maybe it depends how long you have to stay on mushies....for me soups were 4 weeks followed by 4 weeks of mushies so i ended up blending many things....rofl
