I didn't use blair but lots of people have and he has a VERY good rep. I'm sure you'll get lots of Blair fans come and chat to you soon. I don't know how much he costs but i have heard that he doesn't like to discuss money, you talk to his receptionists about it apparently. :)

Hello everyone. I'm new to the boards and am from Brissie. I saw in the paper on Sunday that there's a weight loss surgery seminar at the WEsley Hosp this Saturday abd the surgeon is Dr Blair Bowden. Has anyone used him and is he very expensive?? I think I will go along anyway as it will be a good opportunity to learn more about banding.

Molly,
The magic window only refers to the "rapid weight loss" time. You can still continue to shed the kilos, it just means it takes more effort with eating low kilojoule foods and increasing exercise.
Some people never even have that magic window and just continue to shed the kilos slowly, or as in your case, in stops and starts.
25kilos is still great weight loss for 14 months and you should be proud of your achievement. Don't start worrying about statistics, generalizations and what ifs, just keep concentrating on your own journey and all will work out fine.
I wish you well and continued weight loss.

Hi guys. I have been banded for 14 months now and I have lost basically half of what I needed to lose. Another 25kg to go. I am really concerned that I am going to miss this magic 'window' that people talk about. I still am struggling to get any sort of restriction and for about the third of the time I have had it (before I wake up and it has gone!), I lost weight. The rest of the time I have held steady. My food intake really was only drastically cut during times of retsriction. I have not much by the way of lose skin (I am 30, 165cm and started around 120kg) I guess a plus with slow weight loss (or rapid, plateau, rapid, plateau!).
I guess, does anyone know if the window is only counted when you have restriction ot teh entire time post surgery?? I thought it had something to do with your body adjusting to eating a whole lot less and I am hoping that my yo-yo restriction doesn't count! I am happy for the slowness, just not if it means I will only get to 60% of my excess weight lost 'cause time ran out!
Anyone have any knowledge of this 'magic' window and if it is only true for when you have proper restriction??
Many thanks! Molly |

I would always recommend to anyone that has a band that they have Private Helath insurance. I have had my band since Sept 1999 and have changed surgeons and canceleld my health insurance. So now I have a slipped band and flipped port and would really like it fixed NOW!! But have to wait until April 2008 to re-serve my waiting period before the surgery can be done. Its OK to take the money out of super (about $15,000) once, but what about if you have to do it again? These bands often have a life span of about 10 years, so you should expect to have it replaced, and it takes a long time to replenish your super. Put the money that you save on your groceries into health insurance for peace of mind.
Cheers,
Rachelle |

| Hi Tinabrown, Which state are you in? There are many recomendations for different doctors in different states here. If you are self funded (either have 15,000 to pay for the surgery or are getting it from your or your spouses superannuation)then you have loads of different bariatric surgeons to choose from. If you are going to wait in the public system it differs from state to state as to how long you will need to wait. Cheers, Nic |

Hi Tina
I've brought forward to the front page three threads/topics on Private Health Insurance that should be able to help you out.
I've been banded three years and all my fills are covered by Bulk Billing. My band repositioning was covered by my Health Fund and my doctor didn't charge me above the Schedule Fee so no charge for me there apart from the anaesthetist.
The above are two good questions to ask when surgeons before choosing which one you want to go with. |

Hey geminibabeau,
Great question i have been wondering the same thing. I am getting banded on feb 11 and i am self funded. I have been thinking of joining a fund for those just incase emergencies to do with the band and other health issues too. So i look forward to reading your replies.
Also can any one reccomend a good health fund to join? Any ideas?
Cheers
Tina. |

fills aren't covered by health fund only medicare. I would ring them and check as you will probably have to wait the waiting period for anything band related as it is pre existing.

Hi there, just a question.
Im going to get banded in the next couple of months, self funded. I have just joined a health fund, so my question is once my 12 month waiting period is up can I start using it for anything to do with the banding? ie, fills or god forbid further surgeries for slippage etc? |

I was wondering when Mr yahoo was going to do this, last time he said that he would cut us off at 5000 posts!
Thanks for the clean slate Mr. Yahoo. Now if we could just clean up some of the unused/unuseful threads/pages. He he he.

With purple tutu waving in the breeze, size 26 boob tube slipping but holding, lycra tights chafing and
magic banding wand ready to hand over to the surgeon, I'm all prepared for noddy land.
