Re:Lap Band Advice Reply to this message
Hi,

I had BMI 55 i eat most food slowly without much problem about a cup each meal 3 x a day. I mainly eat healthy food and once a week i will have junk food again only about a cup full at a time. I walk for an hour and half most days. Very rarely hungry. Best thing i have done for myself. But take note it takes work and it dosn't suit everyone so do your research.

Cheers

If you take big bites, its just not going to go down and youll know about it. it can be VERY painful (the pain for me lasts about 8 hours if i cant throw it up - basically until it digests enough to fall through into my stomach).
Sometimes you throw it up or "PB" (Productive Burp - kinda regurgitate it rather than actually throw up).
You can also stretch your oesophagus which can cause serious problems. and risk your band slipping too i guess.

Re:Lap Band Advice Reply to this message
Thank you for your advice. It's really appreciated.

Wow, I can't imagine taking small bites! What happens if you take bigger bites, would you end up throwing it back up or something. I did some research and I have an appointment @ the end of the month, so I'm asking a lot of questions then as well, but it's nice to get advice from others who had the surgery.

I am not really an emotional eater, I just don't eat all day and stay up all night and eat then + eating the wrong foods. I'm really determine to do this because I know it takes a lot of hard work.

Thanks everyone for their advice!

Re:Lap Band Advice Reply to this message
never heard of anyone getting a hernia because of the band before?? im not sure how a band itself could cause a hernia anatomically.

You shouldnt be lifting heavey weights and doctors say you should restrict core exercises (because this builds up muscle which can flip your port or push your band out of place).
However, doing exercise in general definitely does not make your band slip. You should be going to the gym or working out/walking etc regularly if youre taking this as seriously as you should be.
Dancing and partying is defniitely not a problem!

You can eat ANYTHING you want. Dont let anyone tell you otherwise. The difference is you can only eat small amounts - some foods you can only eat VERY small amounts. For example, I can only eat 1/4 a slice of bread. With meat, each mouthful is about 1/2 the size of a pea (literally) and the entire meal is about 2 x 50cent peices big - it can take me 2 hours to eat a peice of meat that size but I can still eat it. Lettuce on the other hand, I can eat a whole bowl full.
Some foods are just more difficult and take more time than others, its not that you CANT eat them.

I think you need to do a little more research as the issues youve mentioned seem a little misinformed. Write down all the questions you have and go and talk to a surgeon :)

At your age with a BMI of 55, in all seriousness, Id do this sooner rather than later. You might also want to think about what made you get to this size - if youre an emotional eater or have some head problems that make you turn to food then getting a band will be very hard work for you - you will no longer be able to turn to food. You might need a counsellor to help you through at least the first few months or so.

Re:Lap Band Advice Reply to this message
legalized with a bmi of 55 you are more likely to get a hernia and have limitations on your ability to party without getting it done. Go for it and have some quality in the rest of your life. As for what you can eat it is an individual journey. My theory is the trick is not to have the band too tight, which is regulated by the amount of fill you have in the band. I am sure you wouldn't regret your decision. You might want to look at the bypass/ sleeve options also. People seem to be having success with but it is more invasive.

Lap Band Advice Reply to this message
Hi, I am considering the lap band surgery. I have a BMI of 55, so I am considered for the surgery. I am young, in my early 20's & a bit worried about issues regarding doing this surgery.

I would appreciate any advice about any positive or negative experience. Also about foods you are able to eat months/year after the surgery.

Would I be able to party and dance and stuff, or worried if my band would slip. My basic issues is the band slipping or getting a hernia.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank You!
