Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
hello mindaire! i started optifast last thurs, and much to my surprise i have lost about 4kg! i have a bet going with my sis on who can loose the most in the two weeks pre-op, i've got $20 riding on this baby! having said that i haven't walked much, had maccas one night, and got a bit drunk on red wine on the weekend... also had the most overwhelming cheese cravings!! i think this is because the shakes are all sweet, and i want something savory. mmm hot chips!! no carli just say no!!
good luck
x

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Hi Guys

When I was on Optifast, I found that if I put a handful of frozen berries in before I blended it with ice, water and the powder, it tasted much better (I only used the choc one as the vanilla made me gag)
A box of the frozen berries lasted a whole week so not too bad cost wise considering the Optifast is pretty expensive to start with.

Good luck to you.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
i can relate to the shake-binge cycle! the first few days all i could think about was food, even reading recipes in magazines made me dribble! it doesn't help either when your flatmates are eating fish an chips or kfc in front of you. they just forget what i'm doing and then offer me some... i just have to leave the room. JUST SAY NOOOOO!!!

i found the shakes too thick to drink, i am now having them with 200ml skinny milk and 100 - 200ml h2o, it takes the grainy texture out and i feel really full after. only 10 days to go till my new life.
good luck jen, i know you can do it!!

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
scaredfatless (hi, what's your real name) just saw your post form last night. The surgeon I saw did not recommend any
change to diet at all prior to surgery except normal fasting for the usual time prior to surgery. Apparently he used to suggest opti-yuk but does not any more. I wonder if it is REALLY necessary. I suppose the good part is that if you can stick to the opti-yuk you would lose masses of weight over a couple of weeks to really start the ball rolling for after surgery. I didn't do any thing special before surgery and there were not problems and I had a BMI of about 50. Perhaps if you didn't really want to optifast and your doctor does not suggest it you could always have a sensible low fat diet anyway for a couple of weeks anyway just to start the ball rolling with weight loss. Not sure if this is helpful. Cheryl

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Prior to using the additives in the previous message it is
STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU RECEIVE YOUR LAP BANDING DOCTOR’S AND/OR DIETITIAN’S APPROVAL TO DO SO.

Some doctors and dietitians do not approve of changing the formula of Optifast.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
OPTIFAST ADDITIVES

I add Hermesetas Artificial Powder Sweetener to the Vanilla but not the chocolate, I find the chocolate is sweet enough.

I find Optifast to be more palatable when I throw it in a blender with artificial sweetener, water, ice and blend until the ice is nearly crushed then serve in a chilled glass. For those people that miss chewing, crunching on the crushed ice helps.

I like adding vanilla essence to the Vanilla Optifast to give it a stronger vanilla taste or if I feel like chocolate and don’t have any Chocolate Optifast I add a lite/low joule chocolate powder to Vanilla Optifast. Peppermint or orange essence added to the Chocolate Optifast creates a lovely flavour.

You can also change the flavour of Vanilla Optifast according to your taste by adding any of the following; decaf coffee powder, strawberry essence, peppermint essence, coconut essence, orange essence, coconut rum liqueur style essence, low joule caramel and low joule fruit toppings. To make a Smoothie add fresh fruit e.g. banana, strawberries or a low joule cup of fruit.

LOW JOULE jelly crystals may be used. I have done this and love the variety of flavours. I use a dessertspoon of low joule jelly crystals and a dessertspoonful of Hermesetas Artificial Powder sweetener ( I have a very sweet tooth). I have tried many different flavoured shakes including lime shake which was very nice and I made a non-alcoholic Pina Colada by using pineapple low joule jelly crystals and a couple of drops of coconut rum liqueur style essence. It’s fun to experiment and create your own flavours.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
If you are on Optifast of a prolonged period, make sure you ahve flavour essences on hand, a splash of pppermint essence in the Chocolate shakes is divine. Raspberry essence in the Vanilla is a great change. The flavour combinations are endless.

I must agree with the post above mine. ALWAYS USE COLD WATER!

If you are using Optifast pre op please consult your surgeon before having the soups or bars as the nutritional values differ from the shakes.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Optifast shakes are MUCH nicer when ice is added and they are drunk very very cold. You can also use up your daily fruit ration if you want by adding some frozen berries when you blend for extra taste. If you can find the diet icecream topping you can add any flavour to the vanilla shake for more variety.

Optifast soup - DON'T add boiling water, it makes the soup go all lumpy and curdled looking. Use smaller amount of hot tap water till fully mixed then add some boiling water. It's much smoother and easier to eat that way.

I thought this may be a handy one for putting hints on how to make it taste better, where to get it from, what prices people are paying for it and where, what other similar products are available and where from.
