Hi to those of you facing 'Liquids' for the next two weeks!
Having just moved on to 'Mushies Stage'....( Am very thankful for that but you too will get there! ) I thought I'd post what I had during my 'Liquid Phase'.
Admittedly I wasn't having much of anything at first as really wasn't well...but eventually came good!

* Supradyn ( Liquid Vitamin. Fizzes then goes flat quite quickly. Make it with ice as it will go warm seeing it takes 15 mins to drink…not nice warm! )
* V8 juice...was having OJ but told it could be too acidic. V8 is fine.
* 1/4 serve of Tony Ferguson ( I believe Optifast no good as swells the longer it sits )
* Yakult Light
* Lite Coffee Chill ( 70% less fat than Reduced Fat Flavoured Milk )
* Peppermint Tea ( Twinnings )
* Good 'ol water ( of course )
* Broth from Chinese Short Soup ( not the wontons! ) This was my life saviour!...had cravings for it for a couple of days. One serve lasted 2-3 meals
* Veggie soup ( rather runny…just remember not to have lentils / chickpeas as they add to wind factor! )
* Cup-A-Soup ( can make them as runny as you like )
* Icy poles ( Berri Quelch Smooties. Just discovered them and my kids love them too! )

Then towards the end was able to add:
* Custard ( runny or set type )
* Fruit puree ( Goulburn Valley Twin pack )
* Yoghurt
* Frozen Yoghurt ( Bulla Fruit'n Yogurt )

Just remember variety is the key to staying sane.
And keep your water up....sip, sip, sip all day!
Good luck

vikki
PS. I was also having Soluble Panadol...which took 15 mins to drink. Then discovered Mersyndol was by far a better pain killer. Split tablet into quarters and they went down well with a sip of water

Hi Shanth1

I remember when i got my band done i was to scared to eat/drink anything other than water/ apple juice almost for the first week, and the feeling of restriction - i had the same - but at least then i knew not to overdo it. It is not uncommon - but just try taking fluids often even if it is only 50mls at a time. Stay on the optifast if you can get a bit of that down at least you will get some of your nutrients and restrict the headaches

Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
When you PB does it mean that you have eaten too much? I am only in the early stages of post op, being operated on 9 Oct and I can burp quite readily now without any pain.

I do seem to be able to consume about 200ml of liquid in about 1/2 an hour...is that too much? The liquid being really runny tomato soup made with water rather than milk.

Thanks Bernadette
I think you're right. I've had much less today and hope I get through the night without any PB's (especially as we have visitors and they don't know I've had the band - they just think I have tummy cramps.) Anyway - it's all good and leading to a healthier me!!
cheers

Alison it sounds like you had your first PB (productive burp)its not like a real vomit but up it comes.

It usually means you have had too much so becareful and go slow. Makes sure all your food is runny, like liquid. (jelly sounds to firm given you are only 2 days post op)

Remember to have small amounts more often rather than lager amounts.

Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
Hi shanth1
I got banded on Tuesday and have to stop myself eating too much! It seems to slide down very easily. Yesterday, my first day home, I think I overdid the liquids and I ended up last night bringing up quite a bit of clear mucous. Luckily I just felt a bit nauseous and didn't have a real vomit. I've been pretty gassy today, so have limited my intake considerably. My doc said I can have anything that will fit up a McDonalds straw. I've been also having a Performance Berocca - letting the fizz go out first. But since I've had the band (2 days) I've had custard, pumpkin soup, peppermint tea, normal coffee, drinking yoghurt, pureed cooked apple, potato soup and a bit of soft jelly. I'm bored already though. Friends came over for dinner tonight. They had nibblies first ...boy that was hard, listening to them crunch their way through chips. My husband prepared lovely chicken and salad and crunchy breadrolls for them.....I had pumpkin soup.
cheers

Hi
Have just been banded Mon 9/10/06 - My biggest problem is drinking, I sip sip sip and after about 50mls I feel restricted, most of it seems to be wind I think? and because of this it hurts to drink and im not getting enough fluid so am getting headaches, Oh and best yet! I almost passed out in the shower this pm - have NEVER felt so unwell didn't know if I wanted to throw up or just fall down.

Other than these problems (which im hoping some of it is due to swelling from being prodded and poked during surgery) Im feeling fine mind I could do WITHOUT the wind!! think i'll give the pepermint tea a go tomorrow.

One VERY VERY new bander.

Finally got some soup down 'Curry pumpkin and Chickpea'. I added water but will now add milk to my soups ( Thanks Jen! )
Results not so good but I think it's b/c of the chickpeas (now that I have scrolled back and read the other posts!) they added to my wind and I certainly don't need that!

If your interested in chatting or being just an email buddy please email me sazz28@hotmail.com

Just keeping it going....
I have to go back onto liquids post fill. Back to liquids, then mushies etc. I also find that if I have had an episode through not chewing my food enough, I need to stick to mainly fluids for 24 hrs as well. Gets a bit tender otherwise. Lynda

Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
Jen,
Thanks for you messages. I made pumpkin soup for dinner, my first night home after op. It was really nice. I only managed about 4 tablespoons, which took me about 20 minutes to sip down. I am not getting any regurgatation, I am just being cautious. I ended up substituting the cream in my standard recipe for light milk, hit it with the slender blender and then just stired in a little more milk to cool it down really. Slid down really well.
I have had some shocking shoulder tip pain. What a killer! I have had about 10 De-Gas pills in the last two days. They have helped alot. A walk aroung and a good old burp does wonders for the shoulder pain.

Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
sorry i hope i didnt come accross too strong mate!
soup waterd down with milk is fine and a really good thing to have, having that milk /protein at every meal is important. most soups are fine whizzed up and strained and waterd down with milk. watch out for soups with a bean or pea base in them as you may get lots of gas.

Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
Jen,
Didn't actually mean to come across as not being willing to change. I am banded now and am fully aware of the changes I need to make. I actually just wanted some ideas as to what to eat. I eat pumpkin soup. It is milk based though. Can you have this during the liquid stage or do you need to have a clear broth only. I have Sustagen, however it is like drinking milo. I just wanted some ideas as to what to have that doesn't taste like a dessert during the liquid stage. In hospital they kept shoving apple juice into me and it was so sickly sweet. Thanks for your reply.

Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
h556485 you have to change!!!!! if you arent prepared to make healthy choices then why be banded? the whole point of the band is about lifestyle change. you can make some wonderful soups to have during liquid phase very easily, and they freeze well in small 250 ml containers.
you can buy redimade soups such as Velish that may need to be thinned down with milk at first, if you cant be botherd making any soup yourself.
otherwise at least make sure you have some sutagen or up and go or similar.
and pehaps have a big think about lifestyle changes before your band!!!! hugz jen xox

liquid phase- post op (the straw diet) Reply to this message
thought i would start this one because we havent got this info up for new banders yet.
This info should not replace the guidelines of your surgeon or dietician.
immediately post op you wont be able to have much for a few hours, and you must sip slowly!!! pehaps 50mls at a time for a while. (everyones experience is different but this is pretty much what you can have)
anything you have must be thin enough to fit up a straw, and have NO LUMPS. if you need to water things down try doing it with milk which helps with PROTEIN .
liquid vitamins are important (IRON is essential)
immediately post op -
ice chips or water
next day- (after baruim swallow if that is your surgeons thing)
clear broth
apple juice
peppermint tea (good for the wind)
jelly?

day 2 you should be able to start milk drinks -
sustagen, up n go, tea or coffee, milo, etc
soup but still thin
drinking yoghurt
vegie juice
prune or pear juice if you are having issues moving your bowels.

ww custard with extra milk to be thin enough(yummm)
ww mousse
smoothies
snack pack
ice cream
i put anything im not sure of through a sieve before i have it.
by day 4 or 5 you possiby could drink 250ml in about half an hour to an hour.

by then end of your 2 or 3 weeks of liquid you can start thickening up your things in preparation for mushy stage.
hope this is helpful!
