| Just a little note to keep everyone on track. It takes 3 weeks to make or break a habit. So keep on track and we will all get there. These message boards are great for advice and encouragement. See less of you all soon ! |

Good Morning Everyone,
It's been nearly a week already since I was banded, 9/7/09.
I have to say that my appetite has pretty done an "ELVIS" and left the building.
I don't feel hungry at all and pretty much have to force myself to drink anything. I go back to work this weekend so I gotta start building my strength as my job is physically demanding.
The only trouble I am having is CRAVING, I am missing the taste of food and just having food in my mouth so much. Major freak out last night and went to bed early by myself with the *** s. This is the hard part for me. Bring on the mushies.
Stay strong everyone, together, we will all get through this..... |

Hi Soontobebanded. You'll have to change your name now post-op! Hehe.
I am a week post-op and not getting full on liquids either. My appetite returned within a couple of days and I feel no restriction or sense of fullness at all, unfortunately. |

Thanks Cass and Pyretta.
I think I will aim for 1 optifast a day ( for vits etc) and then juices etc for the rest. I will also have a berocca performance each day.
I will then adapt as I go...
I must say that it is frustrating not to have gotten any useful info from the surgery.
Thankgod for this board and the people who share their knowledge.

Hi Mike. I, too, am in the liquids stage. My op was one week ago. I have been drinking V8, orange juice and water. I also have coffee. For meals, I find I crave savoury foods and my partner has made some wonderful soups (cauliflower, beetroot, chicken and even prawn (with prawns removed, of course). He basically pours them through a sieve so there are no lumpy bits for me. He has been enjoying the puree left over - the beetroot and cauliflower was especially nice, apparently.
Up & Go drinks are also convenient if you have to go anywhere and can be nice for breakfast. But I'm sick of sweet things which taste a bit sickening to me now (must be the after-effects of the time on tasteless Optigloop). When my partner has a steak or prawns, I have stolen a small sample which I chewed for the flavour and then (as revolting as it sounds) spat out so I didn't swallow any lumpy bits.
I've read that others have also enjoyed indulging in chocolate milk and runny custard. Hope that helps.
Cheers,
Cass |

Reposting:
Immediately post op you wont be able to have much for a few hours, and you must sip slowly!!! perhaps 50mls at a time for a while. (everyones experience is different but this is pretty much what you can have)
anything you have must be thin enough to fit up a straw, and have NO LUMPS. if you need to water things down try doing it with milk which helps with PROTEIN .
liquid vitamins are important (IRON is essential)
immediately post op -
ice chips or water
next day- (after baruim swallow if that is your surgeons thing)
clear broth
apple juice
peppermint tea (good for the wind)
jelly?
day 2 you should be able to start milk drinks -
sustagen, up n go, tea or coffee, milo, etc
soup but still thin
drinking yoghurt
vegie juice
prune or pear juice if you are having issues moving your bowels.
Low fat frozen yoghurt in little 100gram tubs
ww custard with extra milk to be thin enough(yummm)
ww mousse
smoothies
snack pack
ice cream
Put anything you're not sure of through a sieve.
by day 4 or 5 you possibly could drink 250ml in about half an hour to an hour.
by then end of your 2 or 3 weeks of liquid you can start thickening up your things in preparation for mushy stage.
There are some fantastic "liquid" recipes in this thread, just look back through the pages
hope this is helpful! |

Mike,
There are some suggestions here: http://au.messages.yahoo.com/lifestyle/lap-band/25 55/ as well as throughout this thread but really it is anything you want, puree and mixed with liquid until it has no lumps and could easily be sucked up a straw.
A great protein hit is an egg flip, or for protein and fibre try the braised steak and baked beans blended in beef stock. Any soups, flavoured milks, even Optifast. You really are limited by your imagination when it comes to liquids and mushies.

Mike,
Each surgeon differs as to what they expect us to do post op. Some ore on liquids for 1 week, some 4 weeks. for some Jelly is okay , for others not. You really need to get the information from your surgeon or one of their team as to what THEY expect.
There is a thread on here: what to stock up on,http://au.messages.yah oo.com/lifestyle/lap-band /2555/ which also suggests some liquids that may be suitable for the post op stage.

Hi all,
I am just wondering if any one has anything they can email to me (mikewtas@yahoo.com.au) regarding the liquid stage, i.e: what to drink...
I am a true believer that knowledge is power, so I am trying to get all the information I can prior to Op in 8 days...
Thanks heaps, Mike. |

Cherry,
I only stayed on the painkillers for 3 days but some people need longer. I wasn't in much pain at all. One week may be enough but you still may find yourself uncomfortable behind the desk. Try and get up and have short strolls every hour or so.
I was back on the treadmill after a week, just slowly at first. You will know when everything starts to feel okay. When you get back to exercise just take it easy to start with. It takes around 6 weeks for things to heal properly.
If you are more than 2 days post op try mixing up your "meals" an egg flip sounds like it's in order.
Hang in there and don't be in too big a hurry. This isn't a diet now, it's a way of life.

Hey Pyretta,
How long do you normally have to stay on the painkillers for? Also, I am taking about 1 week off work becoz that is all I have in sick leave owing to me, will I be ok - have a desk job. How long before I would be able to power walk / jog? Any tips from anyone would be great and have already had a lot of good info from this site. So sick of drinking black tea, bonox and optifast tho... x |

Hi Everyone,
I was banded last Thurs 9/7/09 and so far so good.
When i started optifast 3 weeks before op i was 113kg, this morning i had to get hubby to check that i was reading the scales right when they said 103kg. WOOHOO
STill a little tender and find i can't move around too much for too long. Have no appetite at all, but am in the middle of a huge fight with my head that is craving food. I guess all i'm missing is actually putting food in my mouth. But having lost 10kg in 3 weeks, who can complain. I printed a pic of Megan Foxx for inspirationn, "Meagn Foxx look out, here I come". hahaha |

Deb,
it was the dietitian at the hospital who gave me the "recipe for the braise steak, baked beans and stock. As long as there are no lumps and it is thin enough to go up a straw, anything should be fine UNLESS your surgeon has told you different, thin stick to their guidelines.

Sorry to butt in Pyretta but can we really blend soup like that with meat in it for our liquid stage?. I understand that the bar mix would be swirling along and to add stock to make it runny..... I am day 5 and only dared have approx 100mls of protein shake this morning (and i thought i hated opti..lol) So, hubby got me some thin chicken noodle and spring vege soup, can i blend the chicken noodle and water that down too??? Pls excuse my ignorance.
Thanks

| Thanks heaps once again Pyretta! To the lady asking about the public system.... which state are you referring to? I am going in as a public patient only have to pay for the consult fees. I had to wait a year to get on the list. Was trying to use my super to pay for it but got such a run around by incompetent doctors and their staff, til I got the good news that I was now on the free list. |

Hi Pyretta,
Your info has been most valuable. There wasn't a lot of information given due my visits to the specialist and dietician. Their pamphlets have very minimal detail on them. So I have been googling like mad to find out what I need post op. It's great reading everyone's tips! |

Miss,
It sounds like you need more protein. Try an egg flip or the recipe my dietitian gave me for protein during the liquid phase: Take a can of steak and veggies or one of those chunky soups and a can of baked beans and blend them until they are smooth. Thin them down with beef stock to a runny consistency and then warm it in the microwave 1/2 a cup at a time to "eat". You can do this with just the baked beans as well.

Please help. It's day 5 post op and I'm starving. I have developed a headache and an aching stomach. I don't feel like it is from the surgery or wind pain as those have subsided. This is different
I am having about 2 sustagans, 1 up and go, some chicken broth and a choc milk each day plus water. My stomach just growls. Is this normal?

Tanya,
Make an appointment with your GP if you are concerned but I'd start having some yakult or similar every day to try and help restore your body's balance.
