Hi all,

Congrats to everyone who has been banded and good luck to you all that are due in the next little while.
I have 9 days to go. Its day 6 on the optifast and I hate to bring it up but I am starving! LOL. But unlike most people I really dont mind the shakes, I have the chocolate one and even though it doesnt taste like a choc milk shake I really dont mind it!

Its been good to read how everyone is feeling, I realise that I might just be normal! I'm feeling the same as everyone else, very very nervous but I just cant wait until it is over! Once I am back home I will be happy, and I'm ready to start my new life. I'm not really scared of failing because due to health reasons there is absolutly no other choice, I cant fail! It has to work or else I'm in big trouble! So I am very positive about that side of it, just scared about the surgery and band slippage and all that type of thing!

Well enough of my rambling, and thanks for the hospital tips!

Mel

Hiya - I keep dropping off the list! I will put myself back on. Had an appointment with the dietican on Thursday at Dr Taylors rooms in Wahroonga NSW. I wonder if he realises that his rooms are right beside the cafeteria - probably not the best place for an obesity clinic! Also while I was waiting the receptionist asked if Dr Taylor would like a coffee. He said yes please with REGULAR milk!! Doesnt it just suck how skinny people(he is very skinny) can have regular milk and we have to have skim low fat no fun everything! Go figure!
Well done to the recently banded. Good to hear you are home safe and well. Lizzy

Hi Julie,

Congrats to you too and glad to hear all is well. Great tips, hospitals aren't the quietest places are they?? Good idea about the dressing gown too. I was planning on taking my own pillow, I love my pillow and I have heard it is handy to have it to hold over my tummy in the car on the way home.

Looking forward to hearing how you are going.

Cheers

Congrats Kate - I can't believe you had to drive 300km home - but you are right it sure beats being dead.

Can I ask how much you are hoping to lose?? I am working towards betweeen 35 - 40kg's. My surgeon says my goal at the moment is to have a "7" at the front of my weight!!!

I am glad you can hug hubby and the kids - they are the special moments.

Have a happy weekend

Hi everyone,
I'm just home from hospital. Everything went fine. I'm so glad I've done this -the start of a healthy me.

Everyone in the hospital was fabulous - and understanding. Several of the theatre nurses had had the op. and they raved about it. I'm a little sore - SIX cuts because I had a hernia that had to be fixed as well. The wounds are dressed with a clear, glue-like substance that will just wash off with time. They're really small, except for the port one. My tummy was painted with red anticeptic so it looked rather gross the first time I looked at it. Much better after a shower. I can walk easily, even though the op was only yesterday.

Hints on what to take to hospital. Ear plugs and a pillow. The ear plugs helped me sleep and I put the pillow under my knees to help me stay on my back when I slept. I didn't take my watch, but I wished I had because I had to keep asking the nurses for the time.

I also wish I'd taken a dressing gown. The nurses had me up walking as soon as I could, and although I had nice pjs, I felt self-conscious walking up and down the corridor in them.

Good luck to the next group to have the op. It's nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be.

Julie

Hey everyone - I did it!
Was banded on Thursday an all is well. Yes it hurts a little bit (the 300 km drive home yesterday was not much fun) but a little pain sure as hell beats being dead.
I am still a little bit sacred too - also beats the hell out of being dead.
Nobody can make this decision for you - but you know in your heart if this is the road you've ended up on it's because all the other roads have not worked and this is now the best option for you.
If for some reason it doesn't work out for you, have it reversed - but give yourself the chance to get it right & be healthy - we all deserve it.
Kate.
I've had 1/2 an opti shake about an hour ago & I'm still full. I've been for a toddle around my yard and I've hugged my husband & kids. If I can do that 36 hours after surgery it has to be an indication of how ok I am, and how ok you can be.

Hi chris Im sorry i have no clue how to add people to the list..lol I asked someone to add me as well.Ive been thru all the same questions and doubts about the surgery and have come to the conclusion that i deserve it.Im oppisite to you however,Ive told just about everyone i know, and cant believe how supportive people have been. The opti fast sucks but at the end of the day its not forever. It is a shame we arent going to the same hospital but im sure we are bound to cross paths. If you ever want to chat or anyone else in here my email is bandapoulton@bigpond.com. Have a gr8 night everyone Annie

Impea78, You are right. None of us (sorry for speaking on everyone's behalf) would have started this journey if we didn't think we needed to. I've done my research, as I am sure everyone else here has, and I made a conscious decision that this was for me. Nothing else has helped. Infact, everything else has actually made it worse.
Thank you everyone for your comments and getting me back into the right light.

Re:Anyone getting banded in July 09? Reply to this message
Hi Di aka( slimmerme38) and all July Bandits

I know what you are saying and how you are feeling but I have become to see things like this. We suffer from a condition called Obesity and if we dont do something about it we will die from it in same way by making us more vunerable to cancer, diabetes, heart disease and myrid of other things. For your MIL to say she would never do it is simply crazy if you have cancer do you not seek treatment for it? I see the banding as something to help me beat obesity . Like Chemo is to Cancer so even though i have second thoughts almost every few hours I know deep down that I cant be making a mistake because my life is worth more then any meal and feeling healthy and able to enjoy life is worth it.
You will succeed. I read my 4 year old a book the other day called the Little Red engine and in the book it basically shows kids the power of positive thinking when the little tiny engine saves the day and pushes the other trains up the steep hill all the while telling himself ...I think I can I think I can I know I can I know I can!

I hope I dont sound like a nut case just trying to stay postive because I know how you feel I am living it too people who are not in this position really dont understand it.
We need to focus on changing our life to be the better in our self.

Hope this make you and everyone else feel a bit more positive.

Best wishes Leanne (lmpea78)

I just wanted to reassure all of you who are really feeling the nerves.
I am 23 days banded and I was terrified...seriously terrified, bawling in my surgical gown.
23 days later my knees arent hurting.
After 10 years of taking reflux medication I have stopped.
I can stand up without leaning on something.
Im fitting into old clothes.
I still a bit worn out but no pain (well a little shoulder pain)
Go for it!
If you work with it it will work for you and if it still doesnt it is reversible.
Its a better bet than all those diet companies we have all wasted our time and money on.

Re:Anyone getting banded in July 09? Reply to this message
I wonder how our newly banded friends are from yesterday and today - I am dying to hear from them. No pressure mind you.......I am having a day of ambivilance today - do I need a band?? Is it really so bad being over weight, does it really matter that the tray tables on the plane won't come down properly???

My head Dr is going to earn her $$ me thinks today.....

Like you Di I don't want to fail in this adventure - but failing on weight loss and healthy life style and not focussing on me got me in this predicament in the first place.

12 days until Opti starts - eek

Re:Anyone getting banded in July 09? Reply to this message
Thanks arn and soon2bbanded

On the days I'm not sure I just need to remind myself of how sore my ankles are in the morning, how difficult it is to get up off the floor, what I'm missing out on with my two young girls, not loving what I see in the mirror...... I should actually write a list and keep it as a visual reminder. I really have high expectations of what the band wil help me to achieve. Maybe this is the double edged sword because I'm scared I'll fail. Anyone that knows me knows that I start a lot of things but never finish anything. BUT I know that I'm the only person that can change that.

Message for Rob.......I haven't actually started Opti yet but I was talking with someone yesterday and they said that if you like coffee then put some coffee powder into the vanilla shake. I'm not sure if this is allowed, but it sounded like something I would probably do.

Di

PS. I love reading and writing on these message boards. It is so comforting to know that you are not on your own and that there are people you can ask everyday questions to.

robinjane32 welcome to the group lol @optifast have you found any bearable flavours?

Di I and arn66au know what you mean , I have been tossing up whether this is going to work for me and how much my life will change with friends and family when I wont be able to eat properly at functions and family meets and being scared of getting things stuck etc.. will I be able to continue eating how im meant to forever?

Putting something that’s not part of my body in my body seems so wrong but if it’s the only way? Am I happy the way I am right now only because im scared of the lapband even though I wasn’t happy before?

I also think its so hard to explain to people its not cheating and it doesn’t actually make you lose weight it just limits your intake and even then the rest is up to you including getting your mind used to fact that your full but people are just so ignorant…

I don’t want to fail and what if it doesn’t work and I end up bigger than I started… its confusing but I guess im willing to give it a go see if it does work and if it doesn’t ill see when the time comes :/ don’t want to be like this forever…

At least we have each other to talk to and go through our experiences with everything will be new but anything I know for me is better than living like this!

Hope some of that made sense cuz i havent had sleep :)

Re:Anyone getting banded in July 09? Reply to this message
Hi Di

I know how you feel - it is confusing - I know this is going to be a life altering thing and sometimes I think why the hell am I putting something so foreign into my body???? Am I mad??? Then I worry about travelling and what if something goes wrong and then I think about how it will change the way I socialise with friends and family, so much to think about it. But on the other hand I have this sense of calm that is quite amazing.

When I bend over and the belly gets in the way, or my knees hurt going up and down the stairs etc then I think BRING IT ON!!!

I think it is just our mind playing games with us and I don't think it is going to change in a hurry.

Good on you for telling your inlaws, give them as much info as possible so that they are informed and understand that the band doesn't fix the prob just helps us deal with our demons.

At least we all have each other on here.

Take Care

Arn :)

Re:Anyone getting banded in July 09? Reply to this message
Hi everyone

Yesterday I told my in-laws about my plans. I felt that I had too as I have quite a close relationship with them and eventually they would have found out and they would have been disappointed that I didn't tell them. My father-in-law was speechless. My mother-in-law said (to my husband later that night) that she wouldn't do it no matter how fat she was. Now I am quite nervous that if I don't succeed I'll get the old "I told you so". This is such a life changing, forevermore thing that I'm beginning to doubt whether or not I'll be able to manage. Are these just pre-op thoughts I'm having? Are others feeling the same? Some days I am so positive about it all and wish I'd had it done yesterday, other days I think "what the *#!% am I doing".

Confused, Di

Hi Annie, Very nervous now! The things that are going through my head, OMG. Hope I'm doing the right thing. Off to see the dietician this afternoon as haven't seen her yet and I'm being banded on Tuesday. Not been doing too well on optifast unfortunately. Haven't told anyone (except my partner) that I'm being banded because I just don't want the scrutiny afterwards but eating socially is going to be interesting isn't it. Pity we're not both going to the same hospital.
