Good afternoon all,

Just wanted to give some inspiration. I have started walking...yayyy! Before banding (8 weeks ago) I used to be sooooooo sluggish and didnt exercise. I would be out of breath walking from the Woolies carpark into Woolies. I have started walking every second day, about 1.5km and now am up to 3km. So if I can do it you guys can. I believe I am the heaviest out of our group too.

Also my surgeon has just come back from the Obesity Conference in Paris with lots of information. One thing that they did learn that was very important was after eating a mouthful of food, take a breather, dont take another one for 30-60 sec. i have given this a go and it really works.

Hope you guys are all going well.
Cozzie

sickandtired... you are right about putting knife and fork down, it is very easy, when things goes down easily, to just scoff the food down in no time at all. One of my bad habits. And I guess a reason why I get a pain a couple of times, the pain is in my memory and I do not want that again, so I am a bit more careful now.

Re:Anyone getting banded in July 09? Reply to this message
Hi Bella, I asked my work colleague who got banded last year and she said you should ring your surgeon sooner rather than later and be honest with him. Too much 'damage' can be done in that time (meaning you might stop losing, or might even gain a kilo or 2). Plus, it's not fair on you. You got this thing to help you and you're doing it all yourself! She said to be adamant about it and even turn on the water works if you have to. Unless they have a very good reason, usually they'll cave.

I thought of something else when I was reading the last page of messages, when my husband did Gut Busters years ago, he said the biggest problem was he felt hungry when he'd finished his meal, so it was easy to go and sneak more food. He spoke to the Gut Busters people and they said, take a mouthful of food and put your knife and fork down. Slowly chew the food until you can't chew it anymore, then swallow. Do that with each mouthful. By putting down the cutlery between mouthfuls allows the stomach that bit extra time to realise it's full. The stomach is very sluggish in registering it's full, which is why most people eat more than they should and then feel too full afterwards (think Christmas dinner).
Might be worth a try for those that haven't got good restriction yet and are worried they're eating too much. I hope I'm not out of line mentioning this, I just thought it might be something no-one had thought of.

Morning All,

HAve to share that the cross trainer adn I went to war last night and I did 10 minutes straight without stopping - that's a huge feat for me.....now I am working up to 15 mins. My workout is treadmill first then a series of weights then the Cross trainer at the end - absolute shocker to finish with BUT hey 3 months ago I was doing no exercise and finding it hard to lug myself round......

Scales moved again today so that is good but as long as I never leave the double digit zone again I am HAPPY......

How is everyone???

Have a fabulous day banding friends

Hi Bella,

I agree with Kate - ring up and ask for an earlier fill - having to rely sole on willpower is awful.....if he can or will fill you and it helps that has to be a good thing.

What a fascinating ride this is - I know when I was reading all about this before I had my band that everyone said it is so different for everyone BUT I don't think I really believed that it cold be this different.

Keep up the great work.....

Arn :)

Barge you are too funny - good luck for tomorrow, all will go well and if you have to stay in over night think of it as a bonus - extra TLC or something like that!!!! (I am trying to put a positive spin on it!!!!)

After tomorrow you will be on the downhill run..........

Take Care "Flipper"

Hi Ho, Hi Ho, its back to the hospital for my port un-flip surgery I go....tomorrow.

I have lost a total of 3kgs from this whole experience so far which kinda sucks really. The surgeon promises to put some fill in while he's in there tomorrow, but I've got a long way to go to get anywhere near where I should be by now.

When the hospital called to confirm the details, they broke the news that my day surgery might turn into an overnight stay depending on when I got fitted in the line-up. Not something I'm looking forward to - a quick slice and dice, into recovery and out the door was what I planned in my head.

They call me flipper....

Re:Anyone getting banded in July 09? Reply to this message
Hi Guys,

How are we all going?

I've not had the best couple of days (band and unband related). I think I had a bit of a blockage yesterday but I called the nurse at the clinic and she said she didnt think it was.....but I still do! I woke up yesterday with terrible pain, right at the bottom of my breast bone, where your tummy starts. It was even hurting to breathe and just got worse throughout the morning.

I felt nauseas and couldnt eat anything but fluid was still going down. So I had a fizzy drink and I felt something move up and then back down after that, so I had some more and it seemed to be better. I had some soup for lunch and was fine after that.

So far this morning I have just had a cup of tea, will have some cruskits for breakfast soon, but am feeling much better.

As for restriction I dont feel I have great restriction (have had 2 very small fills). But I still dont have more than 1 cup of food 3 times a day (and sometimes a snack or 2 inbetween). The weight is still coming off, a bit slower now though. I think I have to get started with the exercise (have been very slack!).

Anyway, I hope everyone is doing well. I think we should all be soooo proud of ourselves for making such a big decision to change our lives!

Mel

Hey Bella -
You are not failing! The band is a tool not magic. Y don't you ask for a fill earlier & be honest witht he surgeon - that you've not lost in a couple of weeks & are hungry & looking for food? Tell him you don't have much will power but that's what you're relying on.
Be thinking of you.

Good Morning fellow July Bandits,

Today is 7 weeks banded for me and I love my band. But I can officially say that after my first fill, I do feel some restriction but can eat anything and the weight loss has halted. Still double digits, my body is changing but I haven't lost anything significant in over a week now and I am HUNGRY especially in the afternoons.

Have read all the latest posts - so much good info - what an awesome bunch we are.

On a good note - am loving the gym, especially the weight training. Can feel the strength and energy returning - an amazing feeling after years of t draining away as I got bigger. The cross trainer at the end is a killer but I am deternined that it will not beat me!!!!!

Keep up the good work everyone - WOO HOO......

Hi everyone...havent been on for a bit...have been on holidays... I cant believe how well everyone is doing!!
I had my 6 week app 1st of Sept but the dr wouldnt put any fill in, I was told to come back in another 6 weeks, coz I was doing well enough without it,(didnt tell him that I hadnt lost anything for about 2 weeks before I went to see him tho!) which they changed to 8 weeks as he is going away.
I havent lost anything for about a month and can feel myself eating more each day. I feel like I dont even have the band anymore.
I see lots of people who had their op around the same time as me (20.7.09) are up to their second and third fill......do you think I should be ringing the dr to see if I can get in earlier? I have been thinking about it but for some reason I feel like a failure doing it.
BUt on the other hand I dont want to gain any of the weight I have lost....I still have another 6 weeks till my app and it seems like a lifetime away!!

....and Kate, you are doing really well :)

and sickandtired.. good post too, with good information. I think as a 'pick-me-up' I will go and buy some clothes on the weekend. What I am wearing at the moment is becoming a bit too big, and I might feel nicer and also feel that this is working if I get clothes that fit nicely. Your idea with a money box is good too.

Re:Anyone getting banded in July 09? Reply to this message
Kate, Yes you are right in all your points. I am trying to do just that..
1. Walking every day to and from North Melbourne to Docklands, about 25min each way. This is a nice walk and I am already noticing that I do not get as puffed as I used to get. It is not much, but more than what I used to do.
2. I have cut out bread just about totally, I still have some potato, but the size of an egg, and some pumpkin. OK, I will try to cut it out, and only use low starch vegies, and vegies that are not too "sweet".
3. I have changed my weetbix to a high fibre weet bix, and add nuts&seeds (but a measured amount, 1 table spoon).
4. I have protein at lunch and dinner, and a few vegies. For lunch it will be lentil stew (Dahl) with added tomato/cucumber/mushrooms , or Sardines on 1 rye vita, or low fat meatsauce with vegies, and dinner whatever my husband cooks, but I serve up my own so can choose size of meal (usually steak, chicken or fish).
5. Sleep....hmmm....me'tinks me need some more zzzz...

What I am trying to improve on:

1. Eating slowly and chewing well.
2. Measuring out a small serve and not having seconds.
3. Not drinking too close to my meal.
4. Trying to recognise the full feeling before I become overfull. I think this is a very important point and maybe one that would help me lose weight. I don't think I have had anything stuck yet, but I do get a pain if eating too much. This must be restriction of some sort. The only way to get rid of the pain is either to wait it out, or to drink a little. But this then defeats the purpose of not drinking too close to a meal as I think it "washes the food through" and that stops the pain of being overfull, but of course it also means that I am eating too much.

Not easy, but I need to let the band get a chance to do what it is supposed to do. I have realised today that I do have some restriction, of course I wish I had a bit more, but I have to work with what I got for the moment.

Re:Anyone getting banded in July 09? Reply to this message
WOW Kate, congratulations!! Must be all that good NSW Central West weather! It has been lovely lately. Good walking weather.
To everyone who isn't having good restriction yet, I was talking to a work colleague the other day who was banded last year and I asked her about restrictions (I was thinking of you guys!) and she said it took a good 12 months to get a proper restriction that SHE was happy with. She was still losing throughout that first year, but I think she was hoping she'd lose quicker and with a bit less effort (meaning, she was hoping for restriction earlier than she had). She's got 6.2mls in her 10ml balloon and I think she said she had 4 or 5 fills to get that.
Hang in there guys, it's early days yet. You've all done so well so far, you all deserve to be commended!
I'm not trying to scare anyone, I can see the shoulders dropping and the 'oh no' being said with a big sigh, I mainly wanted to let you know that for some, it can take a little bit longer to get good restriction. You will get there!
I mentioned on another thread that when I gave up smoking, instead of just spending the money on other stuff, I put it into a tamper proof money box. I'm thinking you guys would've spent a fair bit of food each week, so why not put some of that money aside each day/week and when you've reached an amount you set, you can go and have say, a makeover, a massage (or any other pampering thing that you would've been too embarrassed to have before), a holiday or for the bigger people, funds towards getting some skin reduction surgery when the weight is gone. There's a multitude of ways to reward yourselves without using the old rewards (you food, me smokes). You deserve a reward for all the hard work you've put in. Feeling the moneybox get heavier with notes is a good incentive to keep going! I've come close a few times to falling off the wagon, so I go and pick the money box up and shake it.

Hi Qui
My loss has slowed right down again but I'm having my 3rd fill on Thursday & I have a really good feeling about it :)
The things that have worked for me so far are:
1. Walking every day without fail - even 3 x 10 minute walks if you can't do 30 minutes straight up yet
2. Cutting out carbs eg coffee, pasta, rice, potato, sweet potato, pumpkin
3. Eating very high fibre brekky cereal in the morning
4. Making sure I eat protein @ lunch & dinner.
5. Getting heaps of sleep every night so I have the energy to move my ample rump in the morning!

Remember I'm new at this too, but I figure if we each share the bits that work for us, something might gel for you.
Good luck!
Kate

Re:Anyone getting banded in July 09? Reply to this message
I have had two fills and have an appointment Oct 1 for 3rd fill. I am not losing anything at the moment and keep hovering around 89-90kgs. I should probably ring to see if I can get an earlier appointment for a fill, but when I was there they said it was the earliest they could do. It is a bit disheartening as I am desperate to lose some weight before my daughter's wedding in early November. Even 5kgs would be nice. The way I am going now it is not going to happen, unless I start back on Optifast again... don't really want to do that, and probably should not even think of doing that. Any suggestions anyone?

Re:Anyone getting banded in July 09? Reply to this message
I have still had no restriction and only had two fills. Rang this morning to get an earlier appointment as it was going to be 6 weeks between fills. The doc told me last time to be patient as it can take a while to get good restriction. Although I am hearing him 6 weeks between fills is too long so I am seeing him on Wednesday and I hope I have some luck. Anyway good luck to everyone losing weight everybody is doing so well and to those that are a little slow hang in there!!!

Hope you are doing ok Soon???
