Hey tc
You're at the right place to get support. You can do this. You've taken the big step - know you've made the right choice. There is no way you'd have had the surgery if it wasn't. The rest are the little steps that will get you where you need to be.
What do you need from your fellow July bandsters?

Kate, That is great about the embracing the exercise thing - hopefully my treadmill will become my friend again.
The lip balm is a great idea - my lips get so dry anyway.
Good luck with your goals - maybe we could start our own July Bandits sub thread of starting weights etc and goals, weight related and otherwise. Like my wanting the tray table to come down flat on the plane!!!
What does everyone think.
Cheers

Hi Lizzy,
I k now what you mean about Dr Taylor's rooms - right next to the Cafe and a nice cafe too!!!! He is skinny isn't he???? But it is weird walking into a waiting room of pretty much all round people. Hopefully we can meet up at that cafe one day and have a skim milk something in a teeny tiny cup :)
I have head Dr and nutritionist in a fortnight.....just after Opti starts.
See you soon

Hi everyone
quick update on my journey. I saw the psycologist and dietician yesterday. All is well and on my goodness only 11 days to go. I as so happy I stumbled accross this forum as I have picked up so many answers to questions I hadn't even thought of. In fact the dietician and psycologist thought I was very well informed. It's been great reading about your sugeries went and how you are feeling straight after them, its put my mind at ease. The only thing Im a little concerned over is having a five hour drive back the day after sugery.
To all those recently banded, heres hoping youre all back to normal everyday routines as quickly as possible. |

Hi All,
Home fron hosptial this morning about 9am - was banded yesterday afternoon. It all went very smoothly. I was worried that I cheated on Optifast a few times and had some fish, bit it wasn't an issue at all and they didn't even weigh me. It was a bit uncomfortable getting to sleep last night, but by 5am I was up and showered and walking around, and have only have about 4 soluble Panadol since then. I have been getting some referred pain in my shoulders, but apparently that is normal.
Rob, I made up a big plunger of decaf coffee and used that to mix with the vanilla optifasts shake and it tasted heaps better - also good if you put ice in, and drink through a straw. I went through Knox as well and that seems to be ok from our list of things we are allowed to have.
Good luck everyone!

Hey Arn,
My goal to start with is to go from 165 kg to 105 kg. of course I have smaller goes between here & there, but ultimatley to get to 105 kg.
My surgon believes that the band can help me get there & if I "embrace the exerscize" I can get into the 90's.
Suprisingly I have started to embrace the exerscize- I lost about 12kg in the Opti month by walking every day & I'm amazed at the difference the walking has made on my losses & how I feel.
The hint I add to take to hospital is lip balm. Lips get very dry. Also the pillow - I held a soft pillow over my tummy on my 300 km trip home & it saved me a lot of discomfort.
Keep up the Optifast & the activity - I've had no shoulder pain etc & I put it down to walking prior to the banding & taking a couple of little walks in the hours after the surgery. And don't underestimate the power of sleep!

Hi Leanne,
Yes, Dr Watson is really good. The staff at Hollywood have a lot of respect for him. They also say he's very particular about how, when and where things are done - a good thing I think. He's done the op so many times he knows exactly how he wants things to be.
He's also friendly and approachable. I saw him this morning before I was discharged and he gave me a detailed run-down of how the op went. You'll like him, too, I think.
All I've eaten since the band was placed is a little bit of jelly. I'm not the slight bit interested in food. The panadol and anti-nausea tablets work well for me, too.
Thanks everyone for your comments.
Good luck with your op. It's the start of a new you.
Cheers,
Julie |

Hi all,
Congrats to everyone who has been banded and good luck to you all that are due in the next little while.
I have 9 days to go. Its day 6 on the optifast and I hate to bring it up but I am starving! LOL. But unlike most people I really dont mind the shakes, I have the chocolate one and even though it doesnt taste like a choc milk shake I really dont mind it!
Its been good to read how everyone is feeling, I realise that I might just be normal! I'm feeling the same as everyone else, very very nervous but I just cant wait until it is over! Once I am back home I will be happy, and I'm ready to start my new life. I'm not really scared of failing because due to health reasons there is absolutly no other choice, I cant fail! It has to work or else I'm in big trouble! So I am very positive about that side of it, just scared about the surgery and band slippage and all that type of thing!
Well enough of my rambling, and thanks for the hospital tips!

Hiya - I keep dropping off the list! I will put myself back on. Had an appointment with the dietican on Thursday at Dr Taylors rooms in Wahroonga NSW. I wonder if he realises that his rooms are right beside the cafeteria - probably not the best place for an obesity clinic! Also while I was waiting the receptionist asked if Dr Taylor would like a coffee. He said yes please with REGULAR milk!! Doesnt it just suck how skinny people(he is very skinny) can have regular milk and we have to have skim low fat no fun everything! Go figure!
Well done to the recently banded. Good to hear you are home safe and well. Lizzy |

Hi Julie,
Congrats to you too and glad to hear all is well. Great tips, hospitals aren't the quietest places are they?? Good idea about the dressing gown too. I was planning on taking my own pillow, I love my pillow and I have heard it is handy to have it to hold over my tummy in the car on the way home.
Looking forward to hearing how you are going.
Cheers

Congrats Kate - I can't believe you had to drive 300km home - but you are right it sure beats being dead.
Can I ask how much you are hoping to lose?? I am working towards betweeen 35 - 40kg's. My surgeon says my goal at the moment is to have a "7" at the front of my weight!!!
I am glad you can hug hubby and the kids - they are the special moments.
Have a happy weekend

Hi everyone,
I'm just home from hospital. Everything went fine. I'm so glad I've done this -the start of a healthy me.
Everyone in the hospital was fabulous - and understanding. Several of the theatre nurses had had the op. and they raved about it. I'm a little sore - SIX cuts because I had a hernia that had to be fixed as well. The wounds are dressed with a clear, glue-like substance that will just wash off with time. They're really small, except for the port one. My tummy was painted with red anticeptic so it looked rather gross the first time I looked at it. Much better after a shower. I can walk easily, even though the op was only yesterday.
Hints on what to take to hospital. Ear plugs and a pillow. The ear plugs helped me sleep and I put the pillow under my knees to help me stay on my back when I slept. I didn't take my watch, but I wished I had because I had to keep asking the nurses for the time.
I also wish I'd taken a dressing gown. The nurses had me up walking as soon as I could, and although I had nice pjs, I felt self-conscious walking up and down the corridor in them.
Good luck to the next group to have the op. It's nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be.

Hey everyone - I did it!
Was banded on Thursday an all is well. Yes it hurts a little bit (the 300 km drive home yesterday was not much fun) but a little pain sure as hell beats being dead.
I am still a little bit sacred too - also beats the hell out of being dead.
Nobody can make this decision for you - but you know in your heart if this is the road you've ended up on it's because all the other roads have not worked and this is now the best option for you.
If for some reason it doesn't work out for you, have it reversed - but give yourself the chance to get it right & be healthy - we all deserve it.
Kate.
I've had 1/2 an opti shake about an hour ago & I'm still full. I've been for a toddle around my yard and I've hugged my husband & kids. If I can do that 36 hours after surgery it has to be an indication of how ok I am, and how ok you can be. |

Impea78, You are right. None of us (sorry for speaking on everyone's behalf) would have started this journey if we didn't think we needed to. I've done my research, as I am sure everyone else here has, and I made a conscious decision that this was for me. Nothing else has helped. Infact, everything else has actually made it worse.
Thank you everyone for your comments and getting me back into the right light.

Hi Di aka( slimmerme38) and all July Bandits
I know what you are saying and how you are feeling but I have become to see things like this. We suffer from a condition called Obesity and if we dont do something about it we will die from it in same way by making us more vunerable to cancer, diabetes, heart disease and myrid of other things. For your MIL to say she would never do it is simply crazy if you have cancer do you not seek treatment for it? I see the banding as something to help me beat obesity . Like Chemo is to Cancer so even though i have second thoughts almost every few hours I know deep down that I cant be making a mistake because my life is worth more then any meal and feeling healthy and able to enjoy life is worth it.
You will succeed. I read my 4 year old a book the other day called the Little Red engine and in the book it basically shows kids the power of positive thinking when the little tiny engine saves the day and pushes the other trains up the steep hill all the while telling himself ...I think I can I think I can I know I can I know I can!
I hope I dont sound like a nut case just trying to stay postive because I know how you feel I am living it too people who are not in this position really dont understand it.
We need to focus on changing our life to be the better in our self.
Hope this make you and everyone else feel a bit more positive.
Best wishes Leanne (lmpea78) |
