Hi Everyone
Day 1 of Optifast over. It was actually ok. I wouldn't say I love the stuff but I just keep reminding myself "it's only for 2 weeks". I'm getting excited now - only 13 days to my op.
My sister came over today (she was banded feb/mar 09). She is looking really good - down 24kg. My other sister is also getting banded (no date yet). We all ended up going with different drs. Strange. Anyway, Christmas is shaping up to be something special with three slimmer sisters who will be wanting to be in everyones photos for a change.
Best wishes to everyone.

Hi Narelle,
I have heard that some surgeons order xrays before the operation, I think it just depends on your doc / anestheiest. It might also depend on previous health issues. I didnt have to have an xray.
Good Luck

Hi Narelle - I think it depends on your Dr. on what pre and post ops tests are done. My Dr only wanted a blood test. No x-rays, no barim swallows, no visits to the hospital or anethetists. So I only had -
1. Initial visit to the Dr.
2. Blood test
3. Appoint with the dietition
4. Surgery on the 9th July
5. Overnight stay in hospital and home.
Thats it!
Maybe ring your clinic and ask what pre and post op tests your Dr requires.

I had to visit the anethatist yesterday, she seemed very nice and reassured me that my surgeon is very good and that she work with him alot and trusts him totally. This made me feel alot more confident that thing will go well, because up till now i have found my surgeon to very clinical with only hi/squeeze/by lol. While i was in Bunbury i got a phone call from the hospital asking if i could do a pre-op admin appointment. Luckily they could sqeeze me in that same day which saved me driving to Bunbury again which is 55km from my home.
Does any body know if xrays are need before or after the op??? NARELLE |

Arn,
My dietician's sheet specifically says that I can continue to have diet soft drinks and diet cordials. I'm very happy with this! No diet soft drinks would be unbearable.

| Hi All, I am having my op on this coming Monday. I have been almost 4 weeks on Optifast (apart from about 5 cheating meals!!), am feeling better for losing some weight, but am so worried that my surgeon will know I cheated a little. I am also super nervous because I will probably have to have open surgery, not laparoscopy and I haven't seen anyone else who is on here who has had the open surgery |

Hi Trish,
I am day 4 banded and I have had really terrible wind pain. The nurse told me to drink peppermint tea and peppermint water but I also feel very ill from it.
I can say that I got Mintec from the chemist which is the same as drinking lots of peppermint water but it is only a small capsule and it has helped so much, helps the wind pass.
Hope this helps.

I was weighing myself everyday and getting disapointed because weight does not move overnight as i found out,so guy do a weekly weigh in and you can see the difference..cheers Taz |

Trish, i also had a lot of wind, esp. the grumbling kind.I was wondering if it ever went away. IT DOES! ,lolLuckily I quite like peppermint tea, and it did help.
Youdowell, thankyou for your great post. I was beginning to think that something was wrong with my band, lmao. I have had no nausea,or ill effects, only the itchy wound sites, as they heal. I had a long wait before surgery, due to complications with the 2 patients before me. I was at the hospital at 9am, as required, and didnt get wheeled into surgery, til 6ish. I was back in the ward at 8.30pm, and up, walking to the loo at around midnight.I only had IV panadol overnight, and had panadol soluble since being home. I'm sorry to hear that so many banders having a bad time of it.
I changed my dressings a couple of days ago,as they were soggy from showering, and the sites are looking ok. |

Cozzie. I'm been the same as you i cheated on optifast on just day 2 but yesterday i got 98% back on track, i had something little, but still i done better than the day before, and today i'll get 100% on track.I realized that even if when a few small mistakes are made along the way we are still heading in the right direction. Good luck.
Arn, I also went and saw Harry Potter last night. It was a very good movie and i agree that sniffing the popcorn and see people slurp up there fizzy drinks was a bit painful to watch. I am looking forward though to there being more room in the cinema chair lol. NARELLE |

| Hi all. I was done 2 days ago and am having a hard time with getting wind up or out whichever way you look at it(it hurts when the rumbles happen in the top half of my belly) and the nausea is terrible at this stage. I tried the peppermint tea and now when I think of it, the sick feeling is horrible. Actually the sick feeling is there even if I think of water. I am sure this will go away soon when things start to settle down. Am not one bit hungry and have to force myself to sip water. Do not in any way regret being done, the whole experience was different to what I had mentally planned out hahaha. Couldn't wait to get done and now I can't wait to feel normal again :-) Good luck to all who are being done soon and to all who have been done. Cheers Trish |

Hi Cozzie,
Don't beat yourself up - this has to be the hardest part the opti - I can't imagine it being that much harder than it is now. If you could have seen me sniffing the air at the movies tonight as people ate chips etc around me - I was absolutely pathetic and I am only on day 2!!!! If I make to op day and not cheating it will be a miracle and may have to chop my hands off to stop myself.
Be kind to you and don't worry about not having anything nice to say - no one said this was going to be easy.
Take Care
Arn :)
PS: Go July - we rock!!!! |

hi all,
I have 11 days to go till I get banded. I was 182kg before Optifast. Today is my 13th day of Optifast and I am giving myself a hard time cause I have been cheating. I am now reaching for food. I wake up with good intentions only to succumb to what i am making for the kids around early afternoon. I am losing willpower :( I'm going away tomorrow and will have my hubby around me so hopefully that will help. Sorry I dont have anything nice to say tonight. |

Hi Everyone,
The girls and I have just returned home from Harry Potter with 2 other families, what a fun night - but what a challenge sitting around listening to people eating the whole movie!!!
Anyway - had my psychologist and dietician appointment today at the Clinic - fantastic - so thorough, dug up some good stuff from my past about my eating habits etc. Lots of good handouts and then the big one - Michelle the dietician said NO MORE DIET COKE OR FIZZY DRINK EVER!!!!!!! Yes I am shouting - OMG - I love diet coke and a G & T under the palm tree on holidays!!!
I said "never, ever" and she said that Diet coke is especially bad as it leeches the calcium out of your bones and teeth and the acid eats away at the band eventually, let alone the effects of the gas......
So now I am thinking no diet coke, no burgers, no steak - think I will need a whole session with the psych about the DC addiction!!!!! lol.....
Anyway, tomorrow is the pre op visit at the hosp for bloods, ECG etc etc - then on the down hill run ......
Hope everyone is well - just had to share my woes!!!!
Nite Nite
Arn :) |

Well good luck with and I hope it all runs as smooth as mine did. I couldn't cop that Opti muck and fortunately the Doc reservedly told me lean meat and fish would get me by,well that's as I understood it so that's what I did and it all went off as what I could only describe as perfect, If not for the little Key hole cuts I wouldn't know I'd had it.
So mate keep positive get your hospital form happening and I understand fully what you mean when you say it's all becoming "very real" and sadly something you got to do but get it done shove it in the Post Box and make sure you get to the hospital on time. If it was me I would ring your Surgeon and see if he can tell you what time you could expect to be going in and hopefully they'll be able to tell you to save you sitting around for hours on end waiting as that does your head in.... Good luck... |

Oooow... I got the letter from the hospital today which I have to fill in and send back... 2 weeks to go and it is my time (last on the list for July). Have to be in the hospital 7am, so I presume I will be done fairly early in the day. I got a bit of a touch of nerves when I saw the letter, it is making it more real. Filling in the details tomorrow, and sending off the cheque to the surgeon, so then all should be ready to go.
I am doing allright on the Optifast, but ran out of my normal vegies today, so I had some pumpkin, I really enjoyed that, I know it is not one of the allowed vegies, but I thought it better to have that than give in to temptation and have something really bad.
The list is getting shorter, good luck to all of you that go before me (which is really all of you left on the list), and hope the ones alreay done are doing well and feeling great. It is a big step, but I am happy to have made the decision, and feel that for me it is the right thing. According to the letter received today, I also have to make an appointment with a dietitian, so I will do that tomorrow. |
