Hi Kate,
I don't actually work for Dr Gilmore, I work with him at one of the hospitals as a theatre nurse, so sadly, we won't cross paths when you go for your next fill. In fact, I think I am working with him this afternoon!
I love working with him. His intelligence is astounding. I'd never want to play against him at a trivia night. When he's operating, he's talking about what he's doing the whole time, (educating if you will) and I just stand there and take it all in. A lot of the procedures he does are self taught and I would go to him before any of his city colleagues. People assume that all the good doctors are in the city. In some instances that's right, but not when it comes to this bloke.
It's great that your husband has taken the plunge too. Mine could probably do with some surgical help too, but his BMI isn't high enough. It doesn't help that I feel sorry for him all the time and pile his plate high and then hit the kitchen and bake naughty things. It's portion size when it comes to my husband and what I bake.
Good luck for hubby next week! |

Gee that is no good, I am seing Mr Gary Crosthwaite, and he has been really good, I am not seing him at the Avenue this time, but at his North Melbourne office. I did find everyone very helpful at the Avenue for all my pre op checks and tests, but like I said, I have not had a fill yet, so cannot say what it is going to be like from now on. I paid $4000 (out of pocket), and was told that is the total I will pay, and it is covering all future visits for fills etc, and also if anything goes wrong and I have to have further surgery (replacement/reposition of band, port or anything else going wrong with the band). But of course I will have to continue to be covered by private insurance (which I have always had anyway).
I hope things improves for you and that your weight loss will get going. |

Thanks cow_tippin_kate i appreciate it :)
qui_xxx im seeing Peter Nottle at the Avenue i think its rediculous appointments are once every two weeks on a wednesday and when u come on time ur still expected to wait at least an hour im just upset about the whole thing ive had two hernia repairs and paid probably about 1000 for both together then all these little extra bills have been arriving if i was at least losing weight lol i think i would be a little happier im usually always bubbly but at the moment im really down and the fact that when i said the pain was way worse than the surgery two weeks in i was told its normal u just had surgery it took 4 appointments from different doctors to prove i had two hernias in the first place and the same with a previous repair end of last year. |

I had my first fill today. 4mls
Lost 4kgs, possibly more since I didn't have time to go to the loo and bladder was full. Three days of fluids, lol just when I thought things were looking up. =) |

| Hi Soon2bbanded, who are you seing at the Avenue? I am going to the surgeon's office in North Melbourne for my first check up after the banding (next Wednesday), but I believe for the rest I will be seing a female doctor at the Avenue. I am not sure, have not had a fill yet so not sure how it is going to work. From what I have seen so far, the set up seems quite good there. I also had a small hearnia repair, but did not have to pay anything extra. |

Don't give up! I have also stopped losing weight so I DO know how you feel but I look at it this way - it took me 25 years to get to this point & it will take time to lose the weight. It will also take some time to get the band to the "sweet spot". If you're unhappy with the service you're getting from your Dr are you able to find another? It isn't easy when you're not in a capital city, but I don't know that any part of this journey was ever going to be easy.
Please don't regret making this decision - you've been so good to have on this journey. Just stop and breathe for a minute. You'll be ok, keep coming back here. We are here to support each other thru all the fassets of banding, not just the good & exciting bits. I say Chins up, ample chest out girlfriend! You are on the right path - it's just a bit rocky at the moment.

| Hey soon2bbanded I am hearing you! I lost 5kgs in the first two weeks of being done 10/7 and have not lost anything since. I have been really trying hard even getting into the exercise which is a big effort for me. I have had one fill of 2ml but same as you no restriction. Anyway hang in there it is not smooth sailing for everyone I guess. |

| Hey all im totally frustrated i think ive lost maybe a kilo since over a month ago and im still in pain which returned after about two weeks. THe bills for the surgery have crept up including the two hernias an extra 2000 on top of what i was told they would be. Ive already had a fill too and no restriction but those doctors at the avenue are only available once every two weeks WHATS WITH THAT? so to all of u losing weight congrattz!! and to those not losing much i understand ur anguish and frustration but i guess it will happen...im usually so lucky go happy but im almost regretting it now. |

Hey sick & tired
Thanks for posting. It's really reassuring to know that Dr Gilmore has your confidence. I've found him to be excellent and very generous with his time & knowledge. He tells it ike it is - no BS and without the superiority complex that a lot of highly intelligent people have! My husband will be banded by him next week, so that's very exciting for us. We were referred by Dr Gilmore to Lucinda as our dietician and have found her equally as wonderful. At first it was a little disconcerting as she looks about 12 y/o but her enthusiasm is contagous & her support is rock solid.
Why don't you get your Aunt to pay us a visit at this site? I found it helpful to read lots of others experiences and it assisted me in making the decision for myself. It's a decision I will never regret because I was so well informed before making it.
I'll be in for my 2nd fill next week - see you then!

| Sickandtired... thank you for posting, your information is very informative, especially for the ones yet to have the surgery, but good to know for us others also. I was one of the ones with bad muscle pain, and now I know why :) I really felt as if I had been run over by a steam roller (or had done a hundred sit-ups). |

| Just got back from having my first fill too. Back on liquid diet again for 1 week, til the tummy gets used to the restriction. Good news is that the Doc is happy with the weight that I've lost over the past 5 and a half weeks. Bad news is that they found a heart murmer, whilst I was under. Gotta go see a cardiologist now... jeezzzzzz |

I also wanted to add, the shoulder pain can take a few weeks to pass. They fill your belly up with CO2 & even though they get as much out as they can at the end, you can still be left with small pockets of gas. Often, the shoulder tip pain can be worse than the surgical sites! It has to absorb into your stomach or colon before it can be passed & everyone is different as to how long that takes.
The ones that were complaining of muscle soreness post op, that would've been from the muscle relaxant they give you. They can use several drugs to paralyse you, but one in particular can leave you with very sore muscles for awhile. You need to be paralysed so the abdominal muscles are relaxed.
I've had multiple laparoscopies & sometimes I get shoulder pain, other times I don't. I find the best thing for me is a hot pack & once I can feel it moving around a bit, I'd lay half on my left side & rub my right side, with some pressure, running my hand from my back towards my middle. The colon goes from the right side to the left, so the idea is to try & move the gas from the right to the left side. I'm not sure if I've made sense. If you've got a partner, get them to do the rubbing. I've also found that getting partner to run a finger nail up either side of the spine in the lower back helps the gas move too.
When you've had a lap procedure, it's easy to forget you've had surgery, but the fact is, you have. You need at least 2 weeks to recover from the drugs alone, without the surgical side of things, so slow down a bit! Try & tell yourself you've had major abdominal surgery & treat yourself accordingly. Those that have had prior surgery will understand that.
I've never had to diet (don't hit me!), but I've been around a LOT of people who have & from my observations, they lose a large whack initially (?fluid), then they plateau, then they might gain, then lose a bit more, then plateau again. Most of you would've been through that a million times before. You WILL lose! |

I'm not a bandit, but happened across this thread in another search. I read all your stories from the first post and I have to say I am amazed at all of you for what you've embarked. You all deserve a massive pat on the back for all your efforts, even the ones that haven't lost anything yet.
I understand your willpower issues. I recently quit smoking. The quitting was the easy part (really it was, go the tablets!), the staying off it is really testing my willpower.
I'm in Orange and work with the surgeon that looked after Kate (Dr Gilmore). Without a doubt, he would have to be one of the best surgeons in the state and I don't say that lightly. We are very lucky to have him out here and I can highly recommend him for any surgery, not just banding. He's very matter-of-fact and doesn't stuff you around. I would go to him before the other bariatric surgeon here. He is also very good, but I believe Dr Gilmore is a much better surgeon (I work with both of them, so I can comment).
One of my colleagues was banded last year and she is doing really well. We hardly recognise her now. The problem she's finding now is the excess skin. Some bigger members of this list will probably have the same problems when they're down to a size 14 too! There is a lot of excess skin around her neck and it's aged her. I think once she reaches her goal weight she will do something about the skin problem. I think that's a common problem when the MO lose all the weight.
I'm trying to talk my aunt into getting banded. She's been MO for as long as I can remember (I'm in my 40's) and was told if she didn't lose weight, she'd die. She was also put on desk duties at work (she's a cop) because they didn't feel safe sending her out on jobs, she was just too big. They paid for her to go to WW, and she went really well on that initially, but like most yo-yo dieters, she fell off the wagon and the weight has piled back on.
Keep up the good work everyone! |

Mel, hope you feel better soon and that it is nothing serious.
Arn, it is hard going to work after 2 weeks off, but I went in, put in my sick leave, applied for 4 days annual leave in November and then applied for 1 week long service leave for the week after. My daughter is getting married, and my husband and I thought we would go to QLD for a week after the wedding. I am also thinking of retiring, probably early next year (End of Feb I think).
I have poached an egg, and will have that with some baked beans for lunch tomorrow. Will also have a yoghurt in addition to my one weetbix for breakfast (or maybe the yoghurt mid morning). And a WW fruit salad for mid afternoon. So that should see me through the day. Today I was hungry mid afternoon, so I went to the kitchen and got a glass of milk. That sort of did the trick, but by the time I got home I was starving again, and I did not have time to have anything as I had to drive my husband to the city. He has epilepsi so cannot drive. Luckily I don't have to pick him up as my son in law will take him home and also stay the night here. So I am going to bed early, I think I might be coming down with a migraine. |

Well done Qui.....I cant wait until I get in the 80's.....I have another 7.2kg until I get there!
How is everyone else going?
I have been very unwell, but I have been told it is not band related. Have been to the docs and back again tomorrow. I am hoping that it doesnt turn out to be anything serious, fingers crossed hey! And I'm hoping that I feel better sooner rather than later. Band wise what it means for me is that I am hardly eating, still trying to have fluids though! |

| My first day back at work and I am exhausted. I probably should make sure I have more protein early in the day as I got very hungry in the afternoon. But on the scales this morning I am now in the 80's.... whoo hoo... 89.8kgs, so 15.2kgs lost since mid May. Very happy with that. |

Hi Everyone,
Thanks Qui for the food comparison - I can't get my head around the fact that so little food compared to what I used to eat seems so much. Also my dietician said almost exactly what yours did Qui....last night I was mushing some lamb stew and rice but had quite a few whole rice grains and they went down well with chewing.
The weight loss has slowed down since mushies but still going down so that is good.
Isn't it amazing how different this is for everyone??? I am sure we are all going to experience so much.
I tried on some size 18's that I bought a couple of summers ago as an incentive (and never got into them) on the weekend and easily got into them I was so shocked - so I have said goodbye to the size 22 pants for good - what a great feeling.
Sadly my boobs are already looking like I have fed 16 children continuously - oh well, a good excuse to get fitted for good bras and chuck out the daggy old ones.
Keep up the great work everyone - I am so proud of all of us.....
I am back to work today - eek.......
