Hi all, havent posted for awhile but have been checking in from time to time to see how you are all going.
Well I have had a little set back. Got an infection in my port wound. All was going well and the wound looked all healed then an undisolved stitch knot decided to make its way out. This then got infected and I was put on antibiotics. This also meant no fill for me! They have to wait for the infection to be completely gone before they will put a fill in. I pretty much knew what was going on so got to the Dr's ASAP - I didnt want to muck around as I have read terrible stories about port infections and didnt want to to add to them.
My weight loss has been slowwww but at least the weight is still going even tho I dont have any fill in. I am getting really hungry at night but by sheer will power am fending the hunger pangs off. I cant wait for the fill. I HATE having to deal with hunger - it is all consuming and sucks big time.
Handy Hint - watch your rings on your fingers. Loosing weight has made my rings loose and I have nearly lost them a couple of times. I have had to move them to smaller fingers.
Take care and well done all. Lizzy |

HI all,
I have passed the three weeks post op mark and finally feel OK. I wanted everyone who was struggling with the first few weeks to know that not everyone bounces back in the same time frame. I knew lots of people who felt better after a couple of days but my gas pain persisted for a full three weeks and was worse than the operation sites. If you dont expect it I think its easy to feel a bit down and wonder when it will all end (which I guess it does in its own time). For me at least I was feeling pretty bad and to compound it all I was thinking that it was my own silly fault. Now that I feel better physically I am much more comfortable that I did the right thing. So to anyone else still not on top of it all, take it easy and have confidence that the decision will be the right one in the end. |

I went for my first fill today and after three stabs around trying to find the port, I've been sent off to hospital to do it under xray. So another wait until mid next week.
I can almost eat as much as I did before the surgery!

Hi all hope your all doing well.
I am having my first fill on Tuesday (under Xray). Cant wait as I have put on a little weight. I am finding that I am looking for food again - (damn I didnt want that problem to come back.) lol
I have been assured that the next few fills will fix that. Apparently I have 3ml in my 10ml band. I think they are going to put another 2ml in and see how it goes. Is anyone else having the same issue as me with food?
Keep well guys! |

Slimmerme38, the anaesthetic doesn't usually play up with the cycle, but some surgeons, when they're 'in there', they'll have a good look around inside just to make sure there's nothing untoward going on. If the surgeon decided to check your ovaries, just moving them a bit can disrupt things. They don't like being disturbed! Temperamental things they are.
Another thing, you girls have been putting your bodies through hell the last couple of months, that in itself could play up with your cycle. Plus there's been some significant weight loss going on, I'd imagine that could play up with things. There's been a LOT of stress and dietary changes too.
I'm not back at work now until Monday, but I will double check with one of the anaesthetists about whether the drugs can play up with you. I've had probably 15 operations and the only time my cycle has been affected is if they're actually doing something to that part. |

Hi July Bandits
I haven't posted for ages. I guess I'm feeling a little dissappointed with myself. After such a great weight loss start I seem to be falling back into my old bad habits. I know only I can change these things but for some reason or another I don't. I'm just a total nut case. I initially lost 10kg's (including 2 weeks of opti) but have been teetering between 8 and 9kgs for at least the last 2 weeks. I need someone to give me a swift one up the backside.
On another note, does anyone know if the anaesthetic (however it's spelt) plays havoc with womens menstrual cycles? My body is really struggling to work out what is going on and I was wondering if it was surgery related.

| soon2bbanded, the extra you had to pay for the hernias, can't you claim that on medicare? or had the surgeon already claimed on your behalf and the extra was the out of pocket expense? it seems a lot to pay. I have not had a bill for the hernia, but I guess one could still come!!! hope not... I have not received any bills after the operation, I think even the anaestetist also was included in the 4000. |

Mel, wishing you a speedy recovery, not nice to be sick on top of having lap band surgery. I also have to eat slower. I feel that I can eat everything, but I don't, I am trying to "play it by the book" but I am a lot hungrier every day. Not sure how to deal with that. Do you all measure your food and only eat what is recommended? or do you eat more if hungry?
I hope I have a fill next week when I see the surgeon as I think I need it now. |

Good to hear your feeling a little better mel!!
Narelle great weight loss and I love the weight loss comp sounds awesome!
qui_xxx That sounds like an awesome package I was only referred to Peter Nottle cause my previous surgeon didn’t do lapband I am just really not happy all together I wonder if I could change and get the same kind of thing but I doubt it and considering ive already spent about 6000 already was originally quoted just over 3000 but I at least wouldn’t mind finding a surgeon who actually can spend longer than two mins with their patient lol. Im just lucky cause my mum covered me with her insurance for this surgery otherwise im on a pension so its literally sent me broke! |

I agree qui, Narelle your doing great. Everyones loses it at different rates. And you do start to get hungrier before your first fill, you will be back to not being hungry after your fill.
Hows everyone else going?
I am finally on the mend (not band related), have been very ill, but today I am feeling the best I have so far! Band wise its all going along fine. I am finding that I have to remind myself to eat slowly!

| Narelle, 6kgs since July 24th is a lot, that is an average of 1.5kg per week just about. That is an excellent loss. Anything from 0.5 - 1kg per week is what the dietitian told me to expect, and you are doing better than that. Well done! |

Hey everyone,
I know i haven't posted lately. This band journey certainly has it's ups and down.I'm glad to read that i'm not the only one doing it tough. My weight loss has been very slow,i've only loss 6kg since the 24th July.I get my first fill at the end of the month, i'm hoping that makes a difference.I've recently joined a weight loss challenge in my area it runs for 12 weeks, it only costs $30 to enter and if you have loss the most inches then you could win $400.I hope this enough motovation for me....NARELLE |

Hi Kate,
I don't actually work for Dr Gilmore, I work with him at one of the hospitals as a theatre nurse, so sadly, we won't cross paths when you go for your next fill. In fact, I think I am working with him this afternoon!
I love working with him. His intelligence is astounding. I'd never want to play against him at a trivia night. When he's operating, he's talking about what he's doing the whole time, (educating if you will) and I just stand there and take it all in. A lot of the procedures he does are self taught and I would go to him before any of his city colleagues. People assume that all the good doctors are in the city. In some instances that's right, but not when it comes to this bloke.
It's great that your husband has taken the plunge too. Mine could probably do with some surgical help too, but his BMI isn't high enough. It doesn't help that I feel sorry for him all the time and pile his plate high and then hit the kitchen and bake naughty things. It's portion size when it comes to my husband and what I bake.
Good luck for hubby next week! |

Gee that is no good, I am seing Mr Gary Crosthwaite, and he has been really good, I am not seing him at the Avenue this time, but at his North Melbourne office. I did find everyone very helpful at the Avenue for all my pre op checks and tests, but like I said, I have not had a fill yet, so cannot say what it is going to be like from now on. I paid $4000 (out of pocket), and was told that is the total I will pay, and it is covering all future visits for fills etc, and also if anything goes wrong and I have to have further surgery (replacement/reposition of band, port or anything else going wrong with the band). But of course I will have to continue to be covered by private insurance (which I have always had anyway).
I hope things improves for you and that your weight loss will get going. |
