Hi there
Long time no talk..had band replace don 12 June...have been in hospital since with an infection which lead to other complications....sick as a dog...outcome - no band any more - feeling of failure - and still needing to mend a lot before the next step - whatever that might be..

Still believe my band was the best decision I have ever made to help with my weight. Good luck all and feel free to ask any questions I may be able to help you with....my band was my friend and enemy for 2.5 years.

Best wishes
Sue

Hi Guys
I feel like it's treading water at the moment - managed to get to 101.9, 101.7 but then it was 102.4, 102 again which is what I still am so I think this is a plateau period and it's only 3 weeks since my op! I do know I'm not drinking anything like the water I should - hopefully when our cold NZ weather warms up I'll feel thirstier. Continental Minestrone Cuppa Soup is my favourite lunch and last night I had 3/4 taco with refried beans and mushrooms- yum!

Katie, any weight loss in the first 6 weeks is to be considered a bonus. This is a time to heal not the time to actively lose weight.
That comes later.
I have lost between 4-6 weeks post op this time and now I have started boot camp. Now that is hard!! 30kgs gone forever since 7/8.
You will drop weight when your body/mind is ready. Meanwhile relax enjoy, keep the protein and fluids up- a true secret. Barb

Sorry Katie I did get that you didnt want to weigh this week!
I was nagging everyone else.
I understand that you feel fragile, I had a cry when I put on and was pretty down. Ive also had a couple of days when I wished I hadn't had the band.
Hopefully your fill under the ultrasound will be a lot quicker...mine really didnt hurt.

I do want to keep up with the weigh ins, but feeling a bit fragile in the early stages... sorry to not be consistant, but I think I'm better off waiting and weighing in when I think I have lost a bit to save myself from comfort eating because I have put on.

I'll have to remember to ask if I have a big or small band when I go for my fill on Thursday... really not looking forward to being jabbed again lol

Hope everyone had a nice weekend xx

Re:June 2009 bandits Reply to this message
Hi Katie,
Dont worry if you have put on a little as I think it is really really common at this stage. I put on two and have dropped it again but I was still annoyed.
I have four mls in total. The doctor removed the small amount they put in when the band is placed (it was about a mil to replace the air) and measured the total amount. I am fairly certain I have the large size band though and yours may be smaller. The doctor said I wont notice any restriction at all until I have between six and ten mils.

Looks like nobody wants to keep up with the weigh ins?
Mandy.

Re:June 2009 bandits Reply to this message
I didn't report my weight this week because I'm too scared to weigh myself. I will have put on in the past 2 weeks because I have eaten so much. Just waiting to get a fill on thursday and see how I go.
How much did everyone get put in their first fill? Mine is 2ml from what I can tell on the referal for the xray ppl.

Hoping this will be enough to get me moving again with the weight loss... winter is so draining :(

Thanks for this. I have been on purees but was finding I was getting increasingly hungry between meals. After re-reading the notes from the doctor where it suggests if you are hungry to move to the mushie stage, I decided that I would, but perhaps I should have put up with the hunger or eaten more puree food between meals rather than change the consistency.

I have steered clear of eggs as I had thought scrambled eggs sounded like it wouldnt fall into the puree stage although I hadnt considered the affect of some additional milk making it softer.

I will stay on liquids for today as I still am getting twinges of pain so will err on the side of caution. This is the first time I have not felt well or experienced any pain so am feeling a little anxious and hoping that all is OK with the band as the pain is in that region.

I appreciate you help and will try a few of these suggestions.

Thanks

Hi all

Some of the suggestions from my dietician were:
- Soggy breakfast cereals - Weetbix, Vitabrits, Special K and Cornflakes - soften in warm low fat milk and then stir to a puree consistency.
- Instant porridge, well-cooked till smooth, add extra milk and avoild porridge with dried fruit pieces.
- Pureed baked beans
- Scrambled or poached eggs (mashed thoroughly) add milk to scrambled eggs and keep a little runny.
- Plain/fruit yoghurt, Fruche, Mousse, creme caramel, custard, Fromage Frais (avoild fruit pices unless blended)

I am feeling a lot better and tolerating food very well.

Re:June 2009 bandits Reply to this message
Thanks minimisingme
I would loved it to be hunger but the pain was in the diaphram area so hope I have not done any damage to the band. I didnt feel like I had eaten that much but perhaps I had without realising it.

I see the doctor and the dietician on Thursday and see what they have to say so will stay on purees until then. Somewhat nervous about eating as the pain was quite extreme and at no point have I had any pain like that since the op. I took a few de-gas incase that too causing a problem.

I guess it is all "live and learn"!

Great weight loss Deb! Just a thought...the pain could be hunger. I had some rather awful pain that woke me up about ten days ago and the dietitian said it was probably hunger pangs, pain from the band is more in your diaphragm area.

Just re posting again to keep my stats correct.

Good Moening
Not having a great day today and experienced a bit of stomach pain last night. Yesterday changed my diet a little to add some mushie foods and dont know if I ate too much or whether the consistency was not suitable. Had re-read the doctor info which said to move to mushie if you are getting hungry between meals with the puree - which I was - so I did! Am having a day on very runny fluids today in the hope I will feel better.

Here are my weigh in results 12.8kg down - wooohoo!!!

Kate thats an amazing weight loss! Congratulations, dont get too down if your weight creeps up a little when you are back on more normal food (like I did!) as it will go down again. I think our bodies just scream "OH MY G*D>>>ITS FOOD!!!" and hold on tight for a few days.

Im sorry your fill wasnt straight forward Katie. It probably isnt any comfort but Ive had my fill and wont get another for six weeks and still feel like Im running purely on will power.
Are you going to log your weigh in today?
If Im nagging you just tell me to stick my head in a bucket :)

Hey all,
Went to the doctors last night and was really looking forward to having a fill because I feel like I can just eat way too much at the moment... after I waited an hour and a quarter (he is ALWAYS late) he jabbed around with the needle before saying that I'll have to go get an xray. So here goes another few days where I have to use that good old 'will power' that people keep talking about? lol

Mandy, I hope you're feeling better soon... thanks to everyone who posted mushie food ideas!

Hi all,
I hope you don't mind me joining you. I was banded on 2nd July, which makes me the first person in our July group to be banded. As a result, I've been reading your posts to find out what's normal.
Yesterday (day 8 post op) was the 1st time I felt back to my usual self, didn't need a nap etc.
I've been living on baby food and after a month of Opti, I'm happy to have the puree!
I lost 11kg on the opti & have lost 6kg since banding, although the loss has slowed right down now.
I feel like I could go for a bit of a walk today, so fingers crossed.
Thanks for the food ideas & general info.
Kate.

Hi Kel,
I dont think Im coming down with anything because Ive felt the same for a few days but its a possibility. My throat feels like Im trying to swallow something way too big rather than being sore.
I have lost the weight I put on in Sydney this morning so I am feeling a bit more positive.

Hey Mandy.
Dontcha hate it when you type a full post then the computer freezes!!!!! AHHHHH
Im going well, just cruzing. 11.5kg in 5 weeks so happy with that.
Do you think you might be coming down with something - hence the sore throat and feeling low??
Could you swallow your tablets prior to your fill?
I do get a full feeling everynow and then, mostly after heavier/denser foods. Definately need more fill though.
I hope you are feeling alot better soon.
Maybe call your dieatition, they might have some ideas to boost your energy.
Cheers Kel.

Hi,
Kel are you around? Just wondering if you are feeling any restriction since we had our fills?
I don't think I am but one weird thing has happened and that is it hurts my throat to swallow one half of my largest pill...I used to swallow six or seven tablets at a time so I'm not understanding why half of one should hurt my throat.

I'm not feeling very well at the moment...very weak and yuck. I felt better when I was in Sydney but I think its because I was eating more (and put on 2 kilos in three days!). I think its going to be a really fine line between eating enough to feel OK and little enough to lose weight.
I don't know if anyone else is feeling the same or if maybe its my kidneys etc. I don't feel great on the best of days but this is just really debilitating.

Re:June 2009 bandits Reply to this message
Hi all

Thanks for the suggestions re mushy food everyone.
And great to read all the updates.

I'm still on mushy for another week (Banded 17/6). I've had the occasional bust out to flat bread, chocolate, cheese etc, but my shoulder pain tends to flare up.

I've found the dishes below filling. I'm only allowed 1/2 cup of food but it seems to hold me for a few hours, so may be worth a go if you are sick of the other food options.

Spaggetti bolognaise - veggie mix, spag bol sauce and mince cooked then pureed. Add taco seasoning to make it spicier. Very satisfying. I didn't add any spaggetti/pasta but if you are getting light headed, you might like to add the carbs in.

Chicken casserole - mushrooms, garlic, onions, asparagus, poached chicken, rice, 1/2 small tin of light condensed milk plus a bit of chicken stock. Cook, mush up, put in pan, top with extra light/slim cheese (Bega Super Slim I find good)then bake at 180 degrees until cheese goes golden. Yummy! I'll eat this even when I'm on solids!!

Chicken Paneer (Indian spinach dish)
Look up a palak paneer recipe online then use cottage cheeses and/or chicken instead of the palak. I added a bit of rice as well to thicken it up.

Tuna (in brine not oil) mixed with low cal mayo. Good for lunch. Add some puree fruit (eg. banana, mango, strawbs) for dessert or veggies on the side to round it out to a healthy meal.

Have a great weekend.

Hi Katie,
I too was banded around the sametime and I have been sick of the mushies so I have started to eat more solids. I have been eating some scrambled eggs, braised steak with potatoe & veges (yummy), have had a little chicken, a piece of toast, crumpet - all seems to be ok you just need to remember to really chew well. I think I need to also slow my meals alot more though. I get my first fill next week so I suppose things might begin to change than. Anyway, goodluck with trying different foods. I hope everything goes well for you.

Re:June 2009 bandits Reply to this message
Good morning everyone, saw the deitician yesterday and had my sting cut off (ha ha) all good.
I am on full mushies, she recommended still having one opti shake but NOT as a meal as well as maybe an afternoon or morning snack as it is full of protein to help with energy levels and light headedness.
So I am going to give this a go, went and did a huge shop yesterday, and yeah I have all the ingredients for those souffles, might do a bit of cooking tonight.
Just finished my sloppy oats. So yummy.
I am also starting my exercise routine today, I have been to sore until now,(and too tired) but feeling fantastic today, what a diffrence some sloppy food makes.
I was also told dont be suprised if I dont loose or even put on at this stage, it is just the body adjusting.
Which we all know but REALLY dont wan to happen. So we have to hang in there.
I also found in the health food aisle some sugar free low GI (fake) white, dark and milk chocolate.
I broke off a little piece last night to suck and O M G.
I felt like I was having real chocolate. I highly recommend it. I think you can also get it in some good larger chemists with the sugar free lollies.

Have a good day everyone and I hope we are all big losers.

Mel
