Hi all - joining the blog. Having my surgery on 30th June. Starting Optifast tomorrow. It's been good to read your comments. I am nervous and excited. Two of my best friends have decided to go on my journey with me by starting their diets tomorrow as well. We will be peer coaching each other for the next 8 weeks.

Ha Ha, I will hold him down, you staple!!! lol
Mmmm, its kinda hard to tell if im full, i dont get that stuffed feeling more of a heavy feeling. ive had a few things that i think prob would class more as mushies. just trying to water things down more.
I dont think one drink would hurt, just make sure you have something in your tummy before, you dont want it to go straight to your head!!
I know, you would think we would be at least a size 12 by now!!!hahaha One day, one day!!

Good luck Bron!
Oh Kel give me his number and Ill go staple him to a chair and make him drink opti for three weeks and see if he thinks the weight watchers mousse is reasonable then!
Yes I gave the power walk a miss today, today was the first day Ive felt hungry and I ate some bacon and lentil soup (fatfree)...too much I think because its a bit uncomfortable. It was possibly a bit thick as well.
I tried a top on this morning, one of my favourites I got too big for this year, and guess what??!!?? It did NOT fit yet! HURUMPHF! What do you mean Im not skinny yet? :)
I have a big birthday party to go to Saturday night and will have to avoid all food but I was thinking of sitting on one red wine all night so as not to look too conspicuous...do you think One wine would be ok?

Have you recovered from the last one yet? you gotta love hubbys, barking orders even from work!! lol
Hows mine, i went to a friends the other night to watch a dvd with 4 others, i said i would take desert - choc mousse w/watchers one - as to avoid the questions, ony one knows about the band.
You know what the other half said "should you be eating that!!!" the cheek of it, it was liturally the first "bad" thing to pass my lips in the past 12 or so days!! pff men / pfff skinny men!!!
anyhooo, hope everyone is doing well, not long till the end of the month and we will ALL be bandits!!
Tack care.

Hi ladies,
back again to say hi and read up on how everyone is going... congrats to all for weight loss, mine has been ok, I've lost about 2.5 since surgery but it's stayed the same for the past few days. I'm not too concerned, just more worried about feeling better and I know that I have had a few high calorie choices like ice cream along the way, but when you're sick who wants to count calories? haha
Mandy, yeah I was questioning what I had done to myself for a few days... I can't beleive how terrible I felt, I would def not describe these as days of 'discomfort' as I have heard other people have! I guess when I kept reading that the opti was the worst part, I thought I'd already done the hard yards (wishful thinking I suppose lol)
Amy, I can't wait till I'm 10 days post op and feeling better... that feels like a lifetime away lol
Great to hear everyone else is feeling better and losing weight,
Talk soon ladies!

Oh sorry I missed a few of your questions Kellie. My father and both his brothers unfortunately had PKD and all died from it (my father was 41)I was diagnosed at the age of 12 but have been very lucky and my kidneys have lasted and even allowed me to have two beautiful daughters. My sister is 4 1/2 years younger than I am and also has two kids but unfortunately has been on dialysis and the transplant list for four years.
I see Ian Forbes at his room at Epworth but he is also at RMH so will do dialysis from there. |

Hi katie its good to see you back even if only for a minute. I was feeling really ordinary too so thought that might be why you werent on earlier. Hopefully given a few more days we will be feeling a bit more normal. If you are feeling a bit silly for letting them do this because you feel so bad dont worry Ive been feeling the same! In six months our skinny selves will be able to look back at these posts and be feeling fantastic! (thats what I keep telling myself)
Kellie unfortunately there is noone in our family to give my sister or I a kidney so the dialysis is pretty unavoidable while we wait for a tissue match. My husband may get tested but I know he does not share my blood type so wont have my hopes pinned on him, my sister has found out she has a very, very rare tissue type to match and it is probable I share this.
I have type 2 diabetes as well...hoping this will put it in remission! |

Hey everyone,
Just checking in quickly and I'll be back to read the posts later.... I've had a miserable few days, I really didn't expect to be feeling quite so bad. Today is the first day that I've been up and about and had a shower, brushed my hair etc so I feel slightly more human but still quite yukky.
Hope youre feeling ok Mandy, I saw you still have to wear the stockings? I took mine off on thursday as soon as I got home haha
Anyways, back to the couch, and I will check in tomorrow (hopefully feeling a bit better by then!)
Hope everyone is going well...

Hi Mandy,
The renal doctors were happy for me to have the lapband as it only restricts your eating and not drinking so they were happy for me to go ahead with it.
Hopefully you'll get a kidney before you need to go on dialysis, it's not something you wanna go through.
So when did you find out about the polycistic kidneys? I was diagnosed at age 6 with kidney failure and by the time I was 12 needed a kidney so this is my 2nd transplant. First one I got from dad and this one off mum, I'm a kidney theif lol
Who is your renal specialist?
I see Rosemary Masterson at RMH.
In regards to the Optifast I had no problems with it.
Also, I have type 2 diabetes too. Which they think was steriod induced, well im sure the weight didnt help either but they think it was more the steriods that did it. So hopefully with the weight loss that will disapear.

Hi Kel,
I just went for my first walk and way overdid it...one of my incisions was killing me by the time I got home. I havent really eaten that much so far, a couple of bannana smoothies, some milk, a little drinking yoghurt and some soup...oh and two icy poles made from fruit juice. Trying to keep the water up as well. Ive had a fair bit of nausea so no belnded rissoles for me just yet.
I cant see what my scars are like yet because Im not meant to take the dressings off until Thursday which is when my first appointment with my surgeon is, and no I wont be getting a fill as he said the first one isnt for at least a month.
My husband is back at work today but called with orders for me to go for the walk lol
Our stats are very very close! well starting stats anyway
DOB 10/6/09 115.7
you lost six kilos in ten days!! WOW
Im going to be the slow relation. |

Hey Mandy.
I had the stockings for 1 week.
Hopefully your leg pain settles and you can get some sleep tonight.
Im doing really well, I get a stich feeling every now and then, and the slightest bit of shoulder pain every few days, nothing to bad though.
I have been sticking to 1 cup per meal and usually a cuppa tea or juice between meals. I think im to s@*t scared to eat any more!! lol
Having what i make for the family just blending it and adding water.
wouldnt you believe it blended risoles spuds peas and gravy is really nice!
Having a few grumbles in tummy, but trying to tell myself it is just gas floating around and im NOT hungry, so far im fooling myself!! hehe
My insisions are really really good. All the small ones are just a small red line, and the bigger one is slightly puckered, but not red just a white scar, but still great. Im putting bio-oil on them a few times every day.
Im starting to walk every day, just to the shops around for a while then the long way home.
I figure pushing a pram with 30+ kg in it helps with the workout too. hehe!!
How about you, are you feeling hungry? When is your first app with your doc, are they thinking you will get your first fill then? I forgot to ask my doc!!
Hope your hubby is waiting on you hand and foot!!!! lol
Take care.
Kel.
Well i might put my stats down.
DOB 4/6/09 - 115.5 - 14/6/09 - 109.5 TWL -6kg
I really hope this continues.
I know this first few weeks are not about w/loss- but it helps!! |

Hi Kellie,
Of course I will answer you! I am in awe that you have gone ahead with the band with your transplant. I have polycystic Kidneys and am in renal failure now but not yet on dialysis. My sister has been on dialysis for four years and while this has caused her to put on weight she never had the weight problems I have had since I was 12. MY renal specialist has known me for a very long time and has known I have been trying to keep my weight down with little success and as I have had trouble with low heomoglobin for the last year (injecting aranesp weekly but not at a good level still) I have been so tired the weight is continuing to creep up. Your BMI needs to be below a certain level (31??) to remain on the transplant list and they give you no leway for the size or weight of your kidneys. If you go above this you are bumped from the list until you are back under.
My specialist wants me to lose at least 20 kilos.
I think its going to be slow going as I have only lost three kilos so far after being an angel with the optifast and everything. Can I ask if you were able to use Opti or was the protein load too high?? |

hi minimisingme,
Just curious about your renal problem. I too have renal failure and had a transplant 2 yrs ago after spending 5 yrs on dialysis. I was banded 4 weeks ago. I made the decision to get banded after piling on the weight after the transplant due to the medication.
I know what it's like to have to lose weight to get on the transplant list, cause I fell pregnant a week after I started on dialysis I gained 15kgs during pregnancy and topped the scales at 125 after I gave birth, so theres no way they were going to do the transplant at that weight so when I finally got down 100kgs about 3 yrs later they put me on the list. They did want me to lose more weight but had no choice to do the transplant as I had no working access for dialysis and would have been a goner if they didn't do it.
Are you on dialyis at the moment?
How much more weight do they want you to lose before they put you on the list?
You dont have to answer, I'd just love to talk to someone else who is going through the same thing.

| hi minimisingme, I wear medical stockings everyday because of Lymphodema, if they are giving you trouble, try a very slow lymphatic massage of your legs, in an upward direction, very light very slow feathery strokes, also put rubber gloves on to adjust the stockings, dont just pull or the elasticity is uneven. hope you get some sleep and relief. Thanks Barb and soontobe. Unfortunately there is no way to avoid the transplant list as I have a degenerative disease that wont be slowed or improved by weight loss. They wont list you unless you have a close to normal bmi though so for me this really was a necessity if I want to try to stick around and watch my girls get married and have grandkids.
I need to blow off some steam this morning...is anyone else struggling with the damn surgical stockings or is this a particular torture they have reserved for me? I didnt get a wink of sleep last night because my legs were aching so bad and the thought of another week and a half...UGH
My darling husband keeps saying would I rather have a stroke so they are still on my legs but it was a close call at 4am! |

congratulations Minimising, you are here now. I can relate to the emotional melt down as I did that 3 weeks prior to surgery until the day of. Anytime/anything for an excuse then I would have bailed.
I hope you look after those kidneys- keep them working well. This band should help your body in keeping your kidneys flushing better as you lose weight. Maybe even get off the transplant list eh! I was in awe when I read what you have to deal with. Take care Barb |

Hi everyone,
Well today is the first day Ive been feeling barely alive. I hope Katie is doing ok because I expected her to check in here way before I did.
Got my band Wed afternoon although it was very touch and go for a bit there and I almost walked out! I had a bit of a meltdown as my surgeon told me after I was all ready that my kidneys were ENORMOUS and he would very possibly have to do a full open surgery and remove them to get access...well I freaked and it was only a call to my renal specialist that talked me off the ledge. In the end they worked out a way to go in from above and I was in recovery in two hours.
It took me a while to get out of recovery because the pain killers were making me vomit but after that I was lucky enough to be given a private room which was just lovely.
Had to have my drip in until I was allowed home on Friday and had two pethadine injections but apart from that Ive managed mostly on panadol because Id rather have a little pain than the nausea.
The nursing staff at the Epworth , particularily the night staff, were very caring and helpful.
I have to wear my surgical stockings for two weeks and today is the first day I havent had a really awful taste in my mouth but all in all it went a lot easier than my last surgery.
My husband is cooking my favourite rice tonight and I could kill him! |
