I had a starting weight first visit to the surgeon of 118.5 kilos. Three weeks later after dieting at less than 1000 calories a day and then ten days opti with no cheating I was only down to 115.7 this was the day I had the band done. I was really disappointed in my weight loss particularily on opti as I lost less than a kilo. Yesterday I weighed 109.3 so thats over 6 kilos in 11 days.
I think we will all lose at different times and at different rates and some weigh ins will be really disappointing but others very thrilling...and that it will be very hard to work out why! |

I was banded on the 17th and checked my weight for the first time since this morning, I have lost 4kg in 5 days and lost 3cm around the waist, thats a total since I started on the pre-op stage of 14kg and 7cm from the waist. I am over the moon its great. Still a little touchy around the main cut but all others are all but gone.
Best of luck to everyone
Keep loosing

Thanks for the support everyone, I understand that this part isn't so much about weight loss but I felt pretty bad when I had put on weight this morning. I think I will stop weighing myself for a little while and just focus on healing and eating healthy food.
I appreciate the kind comments and you are all right, I shouldn't let myself get so worried.
Kel, I'm the same with the weight loss number as I'm proud of how much I've lost so far but don't want to have to tell people that I haven't lost any more since I saw them etc.
You've inspired me to get the wii fit out tonight, it's not a bad way to warm up on these cold nights anyway haha
Mandy, glad you had a fun night out!
Hope everyone had a nice weekend
Katie

Kel make sure you tell anyone who asks that the band doesnt work until it is healed and they can fill it, often more than once.
I think some people thinks its a magic band that eats fat! |

Hey All.
Glad you had a great night mandy. Saw an add for avenue q on telly, looked like fun!
Oh man I soooo need a night out!!
jim, welcome, glad to hear all is going fine. im on liquids for 1 month, so trying lots of different things. cuppa soups are a life saver.
you can put absolutly anything in your soups as long as it can be blended in to a liquid!! must admit ive had a few with noodles in them, just making sure i chew them well!
custard, baked beans blended, mousse, have a look on the liquids thread, there are some good ideas there too.
A few people have been saking how much ive lost so far. im just saying a few kg but untill i have a few fills it will be a slow process. trying to keep them off my back, and so i dont feel like a failure when i stay the same weight for a few weeks. I really think everyone thinks in one month time i will have shed 30something kgs!!!!! its frustraiting!!!
Draged the wii fit out of hiding today, did 5 min then my cousin rang so will get back on tonight.
cheers kel |

Hi Jim,
You are definately not the only male to have a band as there are a few on the forum and one was having his Op the same day I was. Maybe many guys arent used to asking for "help" and so dont think to use a forum for support, silly of them I think.
As for soups for people who dont cook my favourite has been a fat free bacon and lentil soup I found in a plastic bag type package in Safeway...delicious, filling, helps with...er..regularity and feel like you are actually eating something. I was desperate for meat and this quelled the cravings.I just whizzed it up with a little more water.
My other regular has been bannana smoothies made with low fat milk and a tiny drip of honey. |

Jim, Welcome. Nice to have a bloke on here. One of the most supportive chaps I had during my difficult journey was Col from Gladstone who has just celebrated his banderversy recently.
We have to have laughter at sometime especially around the footy.

Hi Katie, You are not a failure nor is the band failing. Your body is still healing so you need nutrients- protein and vitamins. How people get them doesn't matter. Some need more than others. Some put on weight in this period. I am enjoying my sorbet soy fruit smoothies with protein powder at least 2 per day eating more bananas and soy milk than I should but I need these nutrients
After my first band experience investigations showed that I was extremely low in B6, zinc, B12 all important for healing. It was also found that I was total dairy allergic and gluten intolerant also not helping healing. Of course the dieticians had emphasised the norm of the need for milky drinks, ice cream etc which I simply didn't have, to my detriment. I didn't have soy products then. Because I had been on optifast for 4 weeks- just 2 serves per day and a light salad my nutritional state pre-op was poor pre-op. I lost so much muscle mass with accelerated weight loss due to the infection.
This time round I am trying not to put 'diet' in front of my eyes. Instead I am putting health and healing. The weight loss will occur once I have healed and after 6 weeks post op. I think we have been dieting and on restriction for so long we need to return to thinking of eating healthy.
As for telling people we-feel so good about what we have done we need to share naturally. Unfortunately some people are less than supportive once told. I had no plans to tell anyone at work however a co-team leader told everyone when I was off sick with sepsis despite me asking for privacy. Now I have decided I am now a 'role model' and proud of what I have done for me. I welcome discussions from people who are considering the operation. Be loud and proud of who you are. From Aug-Dec I lost 23-24 kg a total of 27kg all up. I am now back on the pathway. You are doing well katie. Barb |

Hi Katie,
Don't worry about the little gain. Lots of us in the May 09 thread had a few little gains post-op, and when going onto real food. Focus on healing. I promise after a few fills, the weight will definitely come off!
Best wishes,
Marg :-) |

Hi everyone, after searching around the net I found all you guys but from what I can see I must be the only male who has taken this step to better health. May i be included in your June bandits' group, I had mine done on the 17th at Greenslopes Private Hospital in Brisbane by Dr John Copp.
so now its Sunday I am on day 4 and have had no problems so far. I will be following all of your progress from now on.
Being a male I am not to good in the kitchen so any idears on soups and things would be very helpful to me.
all for now
best of luck to you all

Hi Katie,
If I remember you did exceedingly well in your opti faze whereas I lost less than a kilo and I promise I was an angel!
I think sometimes our bodies just hold fluid due to swelling or salt levels or something and it looks like we are losing nothing and then the weight loss kicks back in. It is WAY too early to worry the band isnt working because until they fill it it is just willpower and keeping to low calorie choices. Tell me when any of us were ever successful long term doing that?
I have lost a total of 9.2 kilos now but I am eating less calories than I was on opti.
I had a great night last night, dosed myself with baby panadol before I went out and really enjoyed Avenue Q then went to a friends birthday party after for a couple of hours and even danced! I was a little bit naughty and had a frozen margarita and two maltesers at the show and a glass of red wine and a strawberry eaten in tiny bites at the party.
By the time I got home I was in pain and both my shoulders were killing me...but it was worth it. :) |

Hey everyone!
Just checking in to say gday.
I'm 11 days post op. Still quite sore esp on the site where the port is (it hurts less if I hold my hand over it when I walk or move around, and this is how I found out I can feel it under the skin! its weird...)
Still havent lost any more weight, in fact I've put on 500gm since my initial post op loss.
I feel awful really. If I'm not losing weight with the tiny amounts that I'm consuming, then what will happen when I go onto real food?
It never occured to me before this that the band might not work for me... now I'm concerned I've done this for nothing... and even worse, I've told people about my op!
Anyways, that's my little freak out for the day.
Hope everyone else is tracking far better than I am.
Katie xx |

Hi Minimizing, Protein levels can be a curse to some especially renal clients- I can't seem to lose too much knowledge even when I no longer work very much in ICU these days. Worked in a tertiary ICU 6-7 years.
I am now starting to feel hungry which is the first time since the op. I must be getting into recovery mode now. I am really enjoying the sorbet fruit smoothies with protein powder but I know I will probably have to stop once I look at calorie intake. Barb |

I had a lot of pain last night, more than Ive had since I came home. Only had my soup for dinner which is vitamized so I doubt it was a block, I could also drink water and feel it going down. Did go for a small walk during the day but I stress small.
Not at all sure whats going on. None of my wounds look inflamed either.
I hope it doesn't recur tonight because I'm meant to be going to see Avenue Q and then to a party. |

Taz like Kel said everyone will feel different but I wouldnt have been able to go back to work four days later. My op was Wednesday morning and they didnt even let me off the drip or out of hospital until Friday afternoon. I guess it will really depend on what you do for work...a desk may be ok but on your feet all day I would say definately not.
I felt fine on the Monday and went for a walk but felt awful and sore by the time I got home.
I would try to wangle a day or two more if you possibly can.
Although actually I just counted your days and you arent planning to go back to work until day six so that may be fine. |

Nicky you wont wreck anything if you stick to liquids and move to mushies when your surgeon has told you to. Its good to hear you are feeling good just four days out.
Thanks again Babs I will make sure to ask my renal specialist what he thinks about my protein intake as normally I am meant to try to minimise it. |

Hi,
I had my surgery 15/06 so 4 days out for me. I'm feeling pretty good today although for the first 2 days I had a shocking headache... Have managed to drink a couple of up and go's and had a glass of sustagen last night, been a bit nervous to try anything else in case I wreck it...
Its been great being able to read all of your experiences. |
