Hi Wjana

Hope you dont mind me crashing the June thread, i became a bandit and April, and my doctor advised me not to do any weight bearing exercises for at least 6 weeks post op. Walking is the best to do at this stage, but be careful not to over do it.
Then again, all surgeons do differ with their advise.

Hi Blodinger

I am being done on Friday and have been very calm after my cranky panys on Opti, I have lost 4.5 kilos pre op and am getting a bit nervous now, not about the surgery but adjusting my life. I am going to have to change SO many bad habits and this scares me.I have only told 3 people at this stage as I really want to get all the bumps sorted before I anounce it to the world.

Hey Mandy,

Yer there is a lot of stuff involved in a non-matching transplant including antibodies etc and I had to have plasma exchanges before surgery, so just see how everything pans out.

My son, Jonathan is 6 now.

How are you going with your band?

Hi all

I'm a June bander new to the site.
New to online chat forums, so all tips welcome.
June 17th surgery Dr Talbot at Sydney Institute of Obesity Surgery in Ashfield, Sydney.

Still have pain in my shoulder, pain and bloating in my stomach and can't get through a day of activity yet - but nurse/dietician at my clinic said that can happen.

I'd be interested in others views who may have experienced an extended recovery.

I lost 7 kg pre op which was cool. Feels like I've lost more since the operation but I don't have a scale at home.

Am managing short walks - my back has stopped hurting and my knees aren't hurting so much with stairs, so I'm counting that as early wins. Can't wait for the operation pain and tiredness to pass so I can get on with life properly.

Love to hear from new banders.

If you have had 2 c sections, I'm gussing this will be a breeze for you! I really struggled for the first 5 days or so, and I didn't go back to work until 9 days after. Maybe I just didn't expect it to knock me around so much but the first 3 days after the op are a complete blur to me.

I'm feeling a lot better now (2 wks later) but haven't lost much since the op (1kg maybe?). Here's hoping we made/are making a wonderful choice!

Congrats on the weight loss already though, it's great :)

Hi Fi if you have read my messages I am a big wuss with multiple health issues and I really didnt think it was hard.
Uncomfortble and annoying yes...makes you feel like c r a p for two days yes..but after that its pretty much just a bit of discomfort.
I didnt have a c section but I am certain that would be worse.

Hi all...
Well... down hill slide for me... saw the GP attached to the surgery today... she was pretty happy with how I'm going so far - lost another 2kg so that's good.

At first I thought I'd only lost .5 kg and I was like noooooooooooooooo!!! all this optifast and only lose half a freaking kg... but i read the scales wrong! lol

Oh well... anyways.. all is scheduled for slice and dice on Monday. Everyone is really scared about the surgery and can't believe how calm I seem... I dunno about those who have had it done, but I've had 2 c/sections and they were extreme... so I am putting this as comparison, don't think it is as major... or am I wrong and should I start worrying????

Can't believe it's only a few days now... hope i've made the right decision!

Thanks for the quick replies, I think my mind is a little more at ease now - should have done this days ago. I too think that over the last few days I am definately starting to heal more and I am sure it will all be ok. I have only lost around 2 kgs since my op which is a little concerning, but altogether I have lost about 14.5 kgs since I started my opti diet 3 weeks prior. Maybe once I start eating mushies the weight might move again. Thanks again, Gaye

Re:June 2009 bandits Reply to this message
Hi all, I had my first fill yesterday- boy did I notice this one. Fluids overnight and I couldn't wait to get home from my 12 hour night shift to mashed veges with smoked salmon. You can get 11g of protein from a serve of smoked salmon. Aldi has the most delish salmon.

I am findng this new surgeon diet step up amazingly different. Last time 2 weeks fluids, 2 weeks mush then step up. This time fluids until day 10 then puree 2 days then mashed sloppy to chopped/minced to see how I went so the day before my fill a soft normal diet. Fill day 19. It is all so different this time around. I was prepared for the 2/2 wait like last time and I am cautious with this rapid change to diet with this band.
I feel sorry fro those who have to do 4 weeks of fluid. Barb

Re:June 2009 bandits Reply to this message
Hi Gaye,
Yeah I have that 'pulling' feeling as well, but it seems to be getting a bit less over the past few days.
I sleep with a body pillow wedged beside me and that helps a bit.
In regards to the swelling, I don't think mine has been swollen, so it can't hurt to call your doctors offices to have a chat with the nurse at least. When I got out of hospital and threw up the next day I rang my Dr and he called me back himself to see how I was going. If it does nothing else, it might just put your mind at ease :)

I didn't weigh myself for the first time this morning because I couldn't face the same numbers (or higher!!) staring back at me.

I've found that I can drink heaps without feeling full too... even thick soups. I have this aweful feeling that I have stretched my stomach or something but I know I am probably just being paranoid. I might start on mushies tomorrow and see if that helps.

The only time I feel restricted is when I get up in the morning and can only drink about half a cup of drinking yogurt and I feel very full.

Ahh what a rollercoaster it is already and it's only 2 weeks in. It helps so much to hear everyone else is having somewhat similar concerns and issues, I think we'll all be fine in a few weeks!!

Hi Kellie nice to hear from you again.

Yes I did know they were doing non matched transplants but am really not sure what it all entails yet, such as the antigen matches etc, so dont want to pin my hopes on being able to just avoid dialysis and "steal" my husbands kidney.

How old is your baby? Son or daughter? you are so lucky (and brave) to have had a baby while on dialysis, my two are really young adults now but I adore them and am so lucky I was able to have them.
I am glad your sugars are coming down too.

Re:June 2009 bandits Reply to this message
Hi Gaye,
I am still swollen and sore and its worse after Ive been walking for a little or am in the car...hurts going over bumps.
My port is about 10 cm below my left breast and definately pulls as the skin is dimpled. I dont think that scar is going to end up very pretty as it is sort of a ridge over the pulled in skin.
I have to sleep with a pillow and change it from side to side when I roll over.
I was done the same day as Katie so just a day after you. It doesnt sound to me like you are feeling anything unusual but if you think you are more sore than you should be it wouldnt hurt to call your surgeon.

Hi Mandy,

Sorry took so long to reply, I've just moved house so have no internet access at the moment - am writing from work.

Sorry to hear about you dad and uncles..I know PKD is the worst and have met several people with it.

I'm glad that you and your sister have been able to have children. I was so blessed to have a dialysis baby and wouldn't be fussed if I couldnt have any more.

Did you know that they are doing non-matching transplants now at the RMH? You don't need to be the same blood type as the donor. I am 0 + and my mum is A+ I'm sure the RMH is the only hospital in Vic or even the country to do them. So there is something to keep in mind.

In regards to the diabetes my sugars have come right down and so has the overall average, which is great so I'm convinced I will rid of it sooner or later.

Anyways, hope all is well with you and your band.

Re:June 2009 bandits Reply to this message
Hi everyone, haven't been on here much since I was banded on the 9th June. Finally starting to feel better, it has taken alot longer than I thought it would. I have been reading comments from everyone else and I think that I can most relate to Katie, as I too have been very sore in the navel area where the port is. It almost feels like it pulls everytime I move. The more I get around the worse I feel at the end of the day, and the more swollen my stomach ends up. Does this happen to anyone else? Is it still normal for two weeks later to be still getting very swollen? Would love to here what overs think. Ta Gaye

Re:June 2009 bandits Reply to this message
Yes Jana like Kel my liquids just seemed to go straight through. I havent over indulged but have not really felt a full or uncomfortbale feeling except once very early on when my lentil soup was probably way too thick. Im pretty sure I have very little or no restriction yet. I drink just as quickly as before...even really cold water.

Just got back from seeing my renal specialist and he has taken me off blood pressure medication that I have been on for 16 years! Im finding this incredibly odd because I have weighed a LOT less than I currently do over the years so why my small weight drop should now be dropping my pressure so far Ive no idea.

He was so thrilled that I went through with the operation and have lost 10 kilos since I last saw him that he went to hug me and then said with a huge grin on his face that hes not allowed to hug patients but could he shake my hand.
Im glad I made his day.

The only down side was he looked at my kidney scans and agreed they are huge, so huge I will need one removed before they can even fit a transplant. I must admit this is getting me down a little because unlike most here I cant dream of a cute waistline or looking ok in bathers...I can only aim for the skinny pregnant look.

I know my aim is to be healthier and fit for a transplant.
It still sucks though.

AHHHHH MANDY!!!!!!
Dont do it to me!! salmon mmmmmm lol, I dream of that day!!!
Dont worry about the little weight loss, im still the same as this time last week!! nada zip not one ounce lighter!!!
I swear im not getting on again till its in the docs office!!!

Hey Jana. Im STILL on liquids 3 weeks on. Im just sticking to 1 - 1-1/2 cups at a time. Feel like i could have a lot more and a lot faster too. I think that is why im only sticking to that amount, worried it might strech, but now thinking about it, the liquid prob just runs straight through to our normal stomace, hence not getting the full feeling. Just a thought, I dont know for sure. Ramble Ramble!!! lol

Hay,
I have a question. I am on day 5 post op so i am able to have free fluids. I seem to drink my liquids very fast (with no ill effect). However, i am worried that my stomach will get to big with all the fluid (I know might sound silly). Is anyone going through the same thing.

Jana

Still haven't weight myself. Our scales need batteries and i have not brought any yet. I can not weight for the mushie stage. You guys have to try mince stew. It is soooo nice, that is the one thing i am looking foward to. Just google mince stew and you will find many different recipes to try.

Re:June 2009 bandits Reply to this message
I had my first "mushies" this morning but was rather naughty and went for something possibly better left until later in the mushie transition...smolked salmon and light philly on 2 cruscits. I chewed them to death and wow did they taste amazing! I was so missing that crunch and chew sensation I couldnt resist.

I have only lost 100 grams in the last three days and have not been naughty (until this morning) so I guess my body is back to a normal weight loss.

Still feeling really weak and dizzy and my showers have to be cool and super quick or I really feel I will faint. I think its my blood pressure which I dont quite understand as I have been on the same dose of medication for years and have weighed a lot less than I do currently. I am seeing my specialist this afternoon so will try to work it out.

How is everyone else doing?

Nice work Mandy! There are some great ideas there!
I'm going to start mushies later this week... my dietician gave me the very vague guidlines of 'liquids for 1 to 3 weeks' lol
I think I'll do 2 weeks coz that seems pretty standard, then move onto mushies. I have to say I'm getting sick of liquids and the fact that I'm not losing weight at the moment is really not motivating me.
I should probably go back to optifast but can't bring myself to do it just yet lol

Me again :)

Ive been researching foods for mushie stage as I got so bored on liquids and dont want to be tempted to move on before I should.
Thought you might like to see what Ive come up with so far. I know theres a mushie thread but it takes ages to trawl through and we are all close to mushies now.

*Tuna with low fat mayo
*refried beans guacamole cheese smooth salsa
*bolognaise
*cruskits with dip, philly or smoked salmon
*boiled rice, avo, tuna and mayo all mixed in together
*breakfast 2 cruskits with light philli and sliced strawberries or banana
*scrambled eggs
*Skinny hommus dip
*Cottage cheese and a can of Greenseas sandwich spread tuna with thousand island dressing
*Fruche
*blitzed cannelini beans (tinned) with a teaspoon of pesto sauce mixed in.
*Crab salad - with a squeeze of lime and a dab of mayo, chopped avocado
*stewed fruit
and I got this delicious sounding recipe off a site called theworldaccordingtoeggfac e.blogspot.com
Shelly's Baked Ricotta

8 oz of Ricotta Cheese
1/2 cup grated Parmesan
1 large Egg, beaten
1 teaspoon Italian Seasoning
salt & pepper to taste
1/2 cup tomato and basil Sauce
1/2 cup shredded Mozzarella Cheese

Mix ricotta cheese, parmesan, beaten egg, seasonings together and place in a oven proof dish. Pour tomato and basil on top and top with mozzarella cheese. Bake it in the oven @230 for about 20-25 minutes (best) or nuke it till hot and bubbly. I usually made it first in the oven and heated the leftovers in the microwave.
