| Hi, how are you all? I was banded on 22nd June 2009 and have had a rough week but am getting there. I can't believe the amount of energy I am feeling. I had a double hernia repair as well, did anyone on here have the same thing? love to hear from anyone. |

I am sitting here jealous that so many people on this forum have been banded already - my op is Tuesday morning and am getting rather anxious about the pain and discomfort but am committed to this decision so my mantra will be "this too will pass"LOL!
This my shopping list pre-op so if anyone thinks of anything else I would really appreciate it.
DeGas
Liquid panadol or similar (suggestions welcome)
Liquid vitamins (can anyone recommend some nice tasting ones?)
Heat pack
Liquid drinks - yakult, juices
Ingredients for clear soup
If there is anything else please let me know as I am getting a bit anxious! |

Hi Everyone,
saw my dr yesterday 26 days post opp. I had my first fill, no pain at all. He put in some fluid, then made me have a small sip of water but that wasn't able to go down, so he then withdrew some fluid. Now all is good, I think he put in 3 and a half mls, just had 1 weetbix and all seems ok.
He said the band doesn't really work properly on mushes, it works better on solid food, so I am to start eatting small normal meals finally. Cant wait but also very scared.
Hope every one is well.

Hi Jess,
Glad your feeling better than you thought. I am burpy too although its a weird sensation not being able to burp as easily as normal - but BOY it feels good when they come out. haha.
Good luck on the road to recovery :)

Hi all,
I just got home and i am not feeling as bad as i thought. Although my back, shoulders and tummy hurts a bit i thought it would b much worse.
I must say my surgeon is very neat my slices a very tiny makes to wonder how he got it in there.
All the nurses were great at St Johns in Subiaco (WA) and made the stay a lot easier.
I am very burpy at the moment. But otherwise pretty good.
Jess
P.S hope all the others freshly banded are doing ok. |

To the new bander,
I am day 9 post op. I have hardly any pain now (only when i over do it). The pain stop around day 4 or 5, i woke up and it was gone, Each person handles their pain differently. However i just keep imaging my self in a size 12 pair of jeans and a nice top. Good luck guys.

Hey Fi -
Sorry if my story scared you at all. Although im still pretty sore, i have bee reassured by many on these forums that some people's pain is very short lived, and with others it lasts longer. Plus im a big sook lol :P
So never fear - i'm keeping my mind off the pain by remembering what im headed towards... NOT being morbidly obese ANYMORE!!! I lost 8kg on Optifast so ive had a good little headstart and am really pumped :)

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy.... only another day before I get banded... and can say that I'm getting a little nervous... Hearing how people are in pain... not good... I really hope I'm doing the right thing... I can't afford to be out of action for long, have 2 little kids to take care of... oh and a husband... I really hoping that I've made the right decision.
Having been on optifast for the last few weeks has been so boring! I just want to chomp into a chicken sandwich or a piece of fish... but I know that wont be happening any time soon! The only upside of optifast is that it's a good breakfast for me... quick and filling! still makes me wonder what all the ingredients are thats in it... surely if I can't pronounce it it means that its not good!
Guess I should just calm down and go along for the ride. I know I have an excellent surgeon and will have the lowest risk of something bad happening. Guess it's just all the unknown that makes it scary.
Hope all of you that have just been banded in the last few days are doing well and are relatively pain free!

All good Mandy - Thanx :)
I am having a slightly better day today. I have tucked myself into a corner sofa with a blanket. I have my panadiene, supradyn (yuk!!!), De-Gas and a 2 litre bottle of filtered water, the phone, the lappy and my playstationall within arms reach!!! So i feel much more comfortable today which makes a difference.
I found it interesting that you mentioned the shower because when i had my first post-op shower yesterday i noted that the shoulder pain got worse... I thought it might have something to do with hot air rising... am i right? Anyhow, it doesnt matter, but i get that too :) |

JB I am really sorry you keep being left of the list and assure you it isnt intentional because I can think of nothing better than a large group of June bandits supporting each other. If we have a large group we will be more likely to find somebody going through EXACTLY the same problem/frustration/succe ss we are having at any one time!
Personally I am finding this forum more support than my surgical team because we have all been through it and can talk to each other daily.
I think what happens is people bump the list but havent picked the latest list to bump.
If there are any other June bandits out there who have been dropped off please add your name again!
As far as the pain goes I am doing pretty well 2 1/2 weeks later and dont even have to sleep with a pillow anymore. Sometimes it hurts a bit straightening up after Ive been sitting for a while and my shoulders are still awful in the shower but apart from that its pretty good.
The itch is whats waking me up now and the vitamin e was doing nothing to relieve it so I have just spent a small fortune ($80!but it does come in a smaller size) on some Jurlique Calendula cream that is supposed to restore delicate skin. My sister is on peritoneal dialysis and so has been wearing a dressing she changes daily for four years and swears this is the only thing that has helped with the itch.
I had such a bad day yesterday. I was feeling starving and exhausted and itchy and just really terrible. I wanted the band to take a hike and couldnt believe I had put myself through that and given up so much to feel so awful. I think most of the exhaustion and nausea etc is from my kidneys and my body getting over the operation. I am feeling a bit more positive today and I guess we will have bad days.

Hey jB.
I didnt have to much pain at all, the slightest bit of shoulder pain but thats about it, considering myself very lucky!! i made sure I drank a lot of peppermint tea and had a heat pack on my shoulder constantly for about the first week, so if the pain decided to come with force i would be one steep ahead!! lol
Recovery is very different for everyone mine, i felt good after a few days, as i said not much pain, but other as you proberbly have read ave been out of action for over a week.
At least your other half knows what you are going through!
Make sure you put your feet up and rest as much as you can.
Cheers Kel |

Hi all,
I joined this group on 03.06.09 and then re-added myself on 15.06.09 cause i got left off the list as it was re-published....
And i am doing so again today as i have been left off it still!! So here i am - please remember me:
25th June- (j.bone007) Mr Ian Michell, Essendon Pvt
As u can see i was banded on Thursday just gone... I was lucky enough to have watched my partner go through all this last year and we had the same team of Dr's so that was pretty awesome, but i have to say i am still finding myself surprised by how i feel post-op.
I am so uncomfortable and sore :( The Panadiene Solubles just arent doing enough and i still cant seem to shake the wind pains from my shoulders despite all the De-Gas ive been taking....
Any handy hints from anyone? Any rough time frames for pain to generally subside and allow me to move around normally again?
Thanks for any advice.... yours painfully...

| haha well I think you might be right, I might pull them off tonight because the adhesive never seems to agree with me anyways... I guess I can always put a band aid on them if i need to cover them back up. |

Hi Katie,
Yes Ive been so itchy ive given myself a bumpy rash but there were also little itchy red raised lumps at the corners of my steri strips so I peeled them all off and have begun rubbing the oil in.
My renal specialist was suprised they were still there anyway and actually asked if I only showered once a week (cheeky beast!)
I think its both the healing and the adhesive that make it itchy. |

Hey Mandy,
Congratulations on being so good! Not much advice on keeping the hunger away, it sounds like the type of hunger that I've had over a few days, and that's the head hunger which isn't cured by a cup of green tea lol
I still have steri strips on 3 of my wounds, the nurse said leave them till they fall off... they came off one and the cut looks pretty tiny but I might get some bio oil just in case tomorrow.
Has anyone else been really itchy though? I feel like my whole tummy is just itchy, especially at night. I woke up this morning and I'd scratched the one cut without steristrips on it and it was bleeding a little.
A lady at work said it might just be because everything is healing up..
Hope everyone has a great friday night, and for those in pain I'm crossing my fingers for a speedy recovery (or at least a comfortable nights sleep!)
Katie

Sorry to hear you are feeling terrible Taz.
Keep up with the pain killers, if you are taking the soluable panadol its terrible and I found the liquid a lot better, it still tastes like cough medicine but isnt as awful. Make sure you are adding benefibre to your liquids so you dont have any problems with the plumbing from your painkillers. My dieticioan said NO metamucil as it forms a gel.
I used a wheat bag a lot for the first few days but I think you are meant to avoid putting it directly on the wounds.
Also try to sleep with a little pillow to support your tummy when you are on your side.
If I had to go out in the car I found the rough roads hurt so held my port wound so it wouldnt bounce around.
I hope you are feeling better in a couple of days.
