Re:June 2009 bandits Reply to this message
Hey you guys in your 20s - Great to hear the surgery is being offered to people early on. I would have avoided a lot of discouragement if it had been available when I was younger (I'm 43) Good to hear you are sharing. The more people who know the surgery is an option, the better.

I've chosen to be a bit selective about what I say to whom. Some I give the full story. Others I just say that I've had an operation to fix a stomach defect that was making it difficult for me to manage my weight. And some people who ask 'How are you" I just say 'great' (eg. to people who I know are major gossipers as I don't want my health/weight to be the subject of casual gossip).

I don't feel the need to be secretive - in the past I've been willing to tell anyone anything they asked. But I decided that this time, I'd test drive being selective. So far, I'm finding it really empowering.

Can't wait to hear more about your journeys.

Hi Hunter Suzanne

Great to have you online planning before the operation.

I'd recommend you plan care for the kids for the first week at least. You should also have someone on hand to care for YOU (if needed)the first few days post surgery.

I was in pain (shoulder, chest, stomach), tired and on the couch for the first 4 days. The first couple days at home I needed help to get up from chairs and getting out of bed required significant effort. Day 5 - 10, I was up and about for a few hours at a time - sitting reading, walks, light shopping - then needed to lay down for a nanna nap for an hour or so. I still had a fair bit of shoulder pain and tummy bloating pain during this time.

I drove half an hour 10 days post op - felt like that was about all I could handle (I've got a manual car). Today 2 1/2 weeks on, is the first day I've felt good all day without a rest. Just a bit of minor pain at the port site.

Don't let this scare you, I think I'm on the 'worst case' end of recovery time and pain. My girlfriend was on the phone to me chatting away 8 hours after her operation and running around looking after her child 5 days post op.

Hopefully you will be on the normal fast-track recovery end of the spectrum - but good to have a plan in place for assistance just in case.

Hope that helps.
Lisa

I am 5 days post op and I am not back at work and would be useless if I was. I am not concentrating and doing dopey things since the op! I am usually the practical and sharp one but that is not me at the moment and am occasionally feeling a bit light headed - I am blaming it on the aneasetic! You may need more time off work to fully recover!

Pureed chilli con carne tonight for dinner and had with a dollop of guacomale - am trying to keep my protein up so thought this meaty dish pureed was an option as well as being a bit tasty! Am sure the small portion was not going to do much damage even if the guacomale was not a light version!

Whilst I am sick of pureed food I know each day is one day closer to being able to eat normal food and guilt free!

Hi all...

Things chugging along pretty smoothly here. Must try that tofu recipe! Appetite is pretty much non-existent and I too am having to remember to eat - and eat nourishing foods - which is pretty restrictive when it's only fluids/up a straw type food... thank god for blenders! If only I could get rid of the gas build up I seem to have... is the only real 'pain' that I've had so should just shut up and put up I guess!

Just one question though... 5 days post op and back at work and feeling very wobbly on the legs/arms... I don't feel tired but find it hard to focus/concentrate on the computer. Anyone else found this? is it due to lack of eating u think?

Deb H,

I love the part where you said "if they have a problem with me losing weight then the problem will belong to them, not me!". That is so true!
And I was the same about making up lies about why I wasn't eating when I'm proud that I've made the decision that I have. Sure, I wish I didn't have to have surgery to lose weight, but I've made a choice to improve myself and my health and my life!

Re:June 2009 bandits Reply to this message
Nothing to do with banding but, I just had the ouchiest shoulder massage, but ohhh it was good!!
My shoulders are full of knots, i think that comes with the profession of hairdressing.
Planning on shouting myself every week from now on.
$15 for about 1/2 hr cant complain with that.
I then decided to have a hair cut, big thing for me to fork out for a hair cut, happy with it so thats a start.
But GEEWIZZ $75 for a wash cut and dry!! mmmm wont be happening every 6weeks thats for sure!!
Hope everyone is healing/feeling/sleeping/ eating well.
All going good here. Even enjoying my daily hour walks!! NEVER thought i would hear that come out of my mouth!! LOL
Off to hit the hay.

Hey Suzanne.
I think your wise to send them to another carer.
I had a quick recovery, hubby was home for 4 days then I had my 2 boys, 1 1/2yrs old & 2 1/2yrs old by myself. I did okay but I had them climbing on chairs then tables to have nappys changed, didnt want to lift them. The other thing is if they decide to jump suddenly on you, ouch!!
Cheers Kel

Thanks for your replies. I think I will err on the side of caution and have the children placed with other carers for a week.

Re:June 2009 bandits Reply to this message
I too am 54 and I decided to tell the world - I didnt until I was close to the surgery date and told them that it needed to be a decision that I made alone. There has only been a couple that suggested I try one more diet but I kindly explained that I was not prepared to try diet number 5,466! I could lose weight but couldnt keep it off! I knew if I tried to keep the lapband a secret people would wonder why I was so suddenly eating so little and I knew I didnt want to start lying about a decision I was very comfortable with. I went to a Dr re my weight at the age of 7 and people have mainly known me as big most of my life - if they have a problem with me losing weight then the problem will belong to them, not me! I am day 4 post op and doing well. Very little discomfort, no reflux and only a little shoulder pain if I gulp water (old habits die hard). Made the tofu recipe tonight which was nice but added some very finely chopped chilli and a squeeze of lemon juice but was nice without these additions too!
In terms of the childcare question, I dont know as I am still inthe first week but I would err on the side of caution rather than risking having to have the surgery re-done. Good luck!

Re:June 2009 bandits Reply to this message
Good on you Katie. I am not young anymore (54) and I feel that my friends and family accept me for who I am. I have been fat for the past 20 years! This was a big decision for me and I have been supported by my friends and family who all feel that it was a 'brave' decision. I suppose people could feel that you are 'taking the easy way out' but the truth is that we have all made a decision to loose weight any way we can.

This is it for me. I dont want to spend the rest of my life limited in the activities I can do and always worrying about my weight. So I choose to use the band as a tool towards my ends. I figure that I will need all the help I need. Also I am hoping that my experience might inspire others to make a move.

I am 4 days post banding and feeling really good. Still having trouble taking a deep breath but not much pain otherwise. I am having no trouble consuming most things and seemingly no restriction.

Re:June 2009 bandits Reply to this message
Same as Mandy, I don't want to scare you, but I was completely non functioning for 3 days.... I don't remember anything about those days except that my mum made my GP come and check me coz she thought I was seriously sick.
I had 10 days off and going back to my call centre job for one day was really rough on me...
I think I reacted badly to the anesthetic and got it worse than most, but I would seriously consider a few days rest at least.

It's nice to hear that there are a few people my age around (I'm 23), and it's interesting to hear who has told people and who hasn't.

I'm terrible at keeping secrets anyways, but I've been pretty open with my friends and family and a quite a few work mates. The only thing that concerns me is if I stop losing weight and people know that I've had the surgery that I'd feel like a failure, but I just count that as a bit of extra motivation lol
I'm proud of the decision that I've made, and couldn't be bothered with the stress of hiding it!

Hi Suzanne,
5 under school age kids? Did the surgeon realise that? you cant pick up anything heavy for a while after your surgery and I am thinking with 5 little ones to care for there would be lots of bending down and picking up?
I dont want to tell you you wont be up to it because you might recover quickly but I sure wouldnt have been. I went for a two block walk the Monday after I was banded (I was done on a Wednesday as well) and when I staggered home I needed a sleep!
You will still be sore and tired.
Is there anyone who could come and help you for the following week so you can supervise and they can do the physical stuff?
I know family day care can be hard to reorg anize.

Hi there prettyinpunk,

Im 24 too :) And like you have not shared my secret with many outside my immediate family, so in a way i can understand the feeling of isolation. I am dreading the return to work when people start asking questions.

Please be sure (as they have already said) to utilise the wealth of knowledge here and ask many questions. Hopefully we can help you to feel a little less alone :)))

Hi guys I am due for my band on 22 July (Wed). I currently work as a family day care provider - look after 5 under school age and 2 after school aged children in my home . Plus my own kids ( 2 teenagers and 1 baby). Anyway I have not cancelled any of my day care children for the following week (27 July) as my surgeon said the pain will be minimal. After reading a few posts I am wondering if I should cancel my kids for the week after surgery. Any thoughts?

Hi Katie,
Im sure you wont do any damage if you chew well. My dietician actually told me as soon as I feel hungry on mushies to make a move to real food so I dont eat more.
I get a fill on Tuesday (EEEK!) Dr Frydenbergh is overseas so I hope his replacement is very experienced.
Im going to Sydney for the weekend so its going to be hard keeping up the willpower. My energy is really, really low though so I might just try eating a little more just for the two days.

Hey x.prettyinpunk.
I didnt feel really hungry in the first stages, even now some days i have to remind myself to eat.
Please make sure you do have something, cos even though your feeling good now it will catch up with you. If you dont get the nutriants, protin etc into you you could have some side effects later ie: a little hair loss.
Im no doctor, but you need to look after yourself, espically in theses earlie stages for healing etc.
Take a multivitamin each day too.
Dont feel alone, cos there is always someone here to talk to.
These forums are fantastic for support and advice.
Ask anything on any thread and someone will have an answer for you!!
Cheers Kel

Hi Guys!
Im new to this whole, forum thing so forgive me if I stuff anything up... But I came on here for some extra advice and support.
I was banded on the 22nd, so Im 11 days post and in the mushie stage... What a nightmare, however Im finding Im not eating... like at all, Im awake at 8am and wont eat til like 6 and even then I have to force myself, but Im not tired or anything. The other things is im only 24 and a lot of my friends and colleagues dont know Ive had this so I kind of feel alone with people to talk to!

Thanks for the tofu recipe Lisa, sounds yummy!
I'm getting to the stage of mushies where I am thinking "surely if I chew it enough, it will be mushy?" even though I KNOW it's not right... lol
I am finding I'm getting more hungry, and I'm trying to combat that by eating smaller amounts, but more often.
Again, I guess we aren't supposed to be snacking, but my energy levels have gone up and I'm still (slowly) losing, so I'll just keep going and see what Dr Nottle says when I see him next week. I really hope he gives me a fill because I feel so ready!
Hope everyone is winding down into the weekend nicely
Katie

The Tofu recipe sounds yum and not too disimilar to the steamed Tofu recipe featured on the Cook and the Chef on Wednesday evening that looked yummy and was making me wish for solid food. I am only 4 days into the puree phase and over it already. This Tofu dish will be my dinner tonight! Thanks for sharing!

Re:June 2009 bandits Reply to this message
Hi Kel - Thanks for your note.

I'm doing well - improving daily. Just a bit of residual tummy pain/shoulder pain and fitness a bit below pre surgery level. Energy is improving though.

All - This is a really really yummy recipe if you are still on puree stage. It is quick, easy and a nice break from soup. It was on the recipe list given to me by the dietician at my banding clinic. A half recipe makes a good meal.

Tofu in Oyster Sauce dressing

300g Silken Tofu (the really soft slippery one)
1 tablespoon oyster sauce
1 tablespoon soy sauce (I use Spiral brand Tamari sauce which is a bit smoother than normal soy)
1 1/2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon sesame oil
1 teaspoon ginger juice (optional) - I mushed the ginger through the garlic crusher which worked OK

Cut up Tofu into smallish bits - set aside
Mix all other ingredients and heat in microwave for 30 seconds or on stovetop (until caramelised)
Heat tofu in microwave on high for 45 seconds.
Drizzle sauce over tofu and serve.

I'm not a real fan of Tofu but this was yummy - sweet, had substance and NOT SOUP!!

Enjoy.

Hi Lisa,
I think it will work better if you cut and paste the whole list and just change your details when you do a weigh in. I know that will mean a lot of lists being pasted but otherwise it will get really confusing and people may get left off.

Katie you are doing incredibly well. I am sure you will be in all those old jeans before you know it.
