Hi all, Things have really changed for me since my most recent fill last Thursday and I now have lots of restriction! I have had a bad day today and after one dumpling at yum cha I have thrown up. The rest of the eating has been downhill and have not been able to hold any food down - mind you wine is just fine!!!! (Mind you, I hardly drink at all lately)

The dumpling is the worst in terms of blockage that I have ever experienced and think I have probably inflamed the band cos goodness knows the throat is - I think tomorrow will be a soft food day!

An update on my weight which looks slow compared to others but that is OK - it is all down and that is such a great feeling!

Hang in there June bandits!

Hey everyone,
Seems like it's dropped off a bit in here!
Hopefully that means that everyone is going well and feeling great!
I have been really restricted with the fill I got last time, I have another appt tomorrow but won't be asking for a fill (never thought I'd say that!).
I have been losing steadily and have to be quite careful about my food choices. I just hope they don't say they want to take some out because I'm pretty happy at the moment.

Hope everyone is well, losing lots, and enjoying the sunshine!

Hi All
It's been a while.
I've not lost any weight the last few weeks - but I'm OK with that as travels to USA and New Zealand to attend workshops and teach the Avatar Course have meant my eating and exercise regime were a little disrupted.
I'm really chuffed I didn't gain.
Doc put in .25 ml yesterday which has helped a bit. I think I still need a tad more.
Wow - don't like the sound of the overfill.
Impressed by the exercise people are doing.
Hope all are well.

Katie I think I enjoy bodypump the most. It is definitely a good low impact class to ease you back to exercise and you can really make it as challenging as you like by adjusting your weights. For me the key is variety, I get bored doing the same thing all the time. Also try to get in quite a bit of incidental exercise like walking to the gym, walking to the shops etc because this doesn't really feel like exercise (Yeah I'm only fooling myself).

I agree on the wine. When I had the overfill and I went out for work drinks and could only fit in 1 glass of wine (and it burned all the way down) I thought "this is definitely no good, if I can't have wine it's just not worth it!".

Have also discovered Yellowglen Jewel sparkling low alcohol and low calorie and not a bad drop.

Tracy, that's an impressive work out routine you have going!
I'm thinking that I really need to step it up to get the results I want. It's coming to a point where I need to exercise or cut out drinking, and since the latter is never going to happen, the gym seems to be calling my name haha

You're very inspirational, getting out there and doing all those classes, which one do you find most enjoyable? I think I need to find something I enjoy, because otherwise I will just give up.

Re:June 2009 bandits Reply to this message
Hi Katie

There were no real signs of overfill when I had the initial drink of water at the surgery. The following day it took me an hour to drink about 200ml of water and for the next week I only had 2 days where I didn't throw up. During that time I could only sip very small amount of liquid and sometimes I felt a burning sensation while it was going down. I persevered for 1 week because I had a similar thing with previous fill but it sorted itself after a few days. After 1 week though I was quite stressed about it which probably didn't help. I had also lost 3.5kg in that week and I had virtually no energy which was threatening to interupt my exercise routine so decided enough was enough. The doctor was horrified with loss of 3.5kg in 1 week and said I should have come back sooner so lesson learned.

Yes I have a pretty strict workout routing. 2 x aqua aerobics classes, 3 x bodypump and 1 x pilates class per week plus lots of walking. I suspect without this I would probably have only lost about 20kg which would still be great but, me being impatient, I want to try to progress things a bit faster.

Wow tracy, 34 kg loss is fantastic!!
How did you know you had an overfill? Did you know straight away? I had an overfill a 2 fills back, but I knew straight away coz I couldnt swallow water, so they took it out straight away...
Have you been working out/exercising? I have been walking but really need to join a gym I think.

Does anyone have any experience with contours gyms by the way?

Hope everyone is going well

Good idea. I am pleased with progress, have 5.7ml in band. Last fill was 5 weeks ago and 4 weeks ago had some removed due to overfill. Since then things have been slow but happy to be conservative with fills from now on as overfill very unpleasant. Due for another fill this Thursday so will see what doc thinks. Hope you are all doing well.

Re:June 2009 bandits Reply to this message
I went to docs last Thursday and having not lost a bean in the month prior, he did a fill. Only 1/4ml fill and I am feeling the world of difference and have lost nearly 2kgs in the last 5 days - yeah hah!!!

I was worried about a fill (and chose not to have one the month before) as I was finding I was experiencing some blockages but have not found that to be any more frequent since the fill.

I too do not see the surgeon that operated, rather his offsider who is also a doctor and who is lovely. I feel very relaxed with him and he pretty much runs on time but never seems to hurry you when you see him.

Take care all and particularly Lisa - dont get down! I feel sure that despite you not being ready for a fill on this occasion, it will probably make a big difference when you do! Good luck!

Re:June 2009 bandits Reply to this message
No worries Lisa, that's what we are here for!

I don't actually see my surgeon, but there are 3 nurses (I assume they are nurses?) who work at the centre that I go to, and I think this is why they have so much time to listen to what you have been eating/doing/feeling etc. Because they only do fills (rather than operate as well) they would be under less pressure and stress I think.

Have a great time in NZ, enjoy yourself and maybe treat yourself while you are over there, have a massage or get your nails done or something! Sounds like you could use a little pick me up!

Hope you enjoy your time away, and perhaps you will be a bit relaxed which might help with the band problems.

Keep us updated!
Katie :)

Thanks so much Katie for taking the time to write and your words of encouragement.

Sounds like you have an awesome doctor. Mine does care, it's just his way. It's like he's done it so many times, he's in a process rather than really connecting with and relating to another human being.

Guess I've just got to up the ante with him and ask him to slow down and listen to me so I can find solutions.

I'm just about to head off to New Zealand to teach the Avatar Course (10 days). I have an appointment with my fill doctor the day after I return - for a fill or investigation to work out what is up. So my goal will be to eat healthily whilst I am away.....I've been pigging out the last few days and have put on a kilo or two.

Thanks again for your support.
Will let you know how I go on the 17th.

Re:June 2009 bandits Reply to this message
Lisa,
I'm sorry things aren't going as smoothly as they could be for you, but try not to see an adjustment as a failure! It's just a step on the way to where you want to be, and just because you may need a fill, it doesn't mean that you aren't doing well.. just that the band may not be exactly right yet.

That said, your doctor should have taken more time with you and discussed how you think you're going. I know when I get my fills, I'm surprised how long they want to spend chatting about me lol

If your doctor had have taken the time to ask more questions then the situation might have felt a bit different, but don't get down about it, you're doing great!

I think I have a similar issue with my band, with the mucous/tightness thing in the morning. I have had mornings when a piece of toast is out of the question (which I hate because breakky is my fav meal haha).

I find that drinking a big glass of water can help, but don't have much advice beyond that sadly.

Keep positive, and remember that you're only part way through the journey :)

I am off the the docs tomorrow and I am not doing well. Tips that my doc gave me to cut down on mucous causing blockages were:
1. Hot drink about 10 minutes before eating
2. Eat a small mouthful and chew well and then wait about 4 - 5 minutes before eating your meal
3 Have a big glass of water about 10 - 15 mins before eating

I have found the first two things work best for me.

Re:June 2009 bandits Reply to this message
OK - so went to the doctor yesterday. He was very stressed out, running behind schedule and without any prelimaries goes - not going well, need a fill, oK let's go. Being tired, jetlagged, my throat feeling like it has a ring constricting it like Ping the duck in the kids story, and with a cold brewing (unknown to me) I burst out crying. I felt I'd done pretty well to lose a bit of weight what with my jaunt to the USA and was happy to leave my band as is for a bit longer so I can work on eating smarter, not less. Only to have him imply I'd 'failed'. I wasn't quite sure why I was crying, but he blamed himself for being abrupt and was very apologetic.

I am hungry a fair bit and needing to eat more than they recommend, but I'm worried about a fill because I don't want this constricted/sore throat thing to get worse. When I'm stressed, my throat constricts - I may be hungry, but if I try to eat, it comes back up, or causes spasms. And there is lots of mucous when it does come back up.

The doc said it is probably throat spasms, not band tightness that is causing the problem. Plus mucous problems. So he's asked me to really try slowing down eating, and if that doesn't work we may do Xray, or investigations etc.

The doc put an adjustment on hold for 3 weeks and we're just trying drinking more water for now.

I know there were tips for mucous problems and throat spasms unrelated to eating too much/too quickly. Does anyone remember what the tips were?

All help welcome. Lisa

I like the sound of that routine Katie.

Wasn't that hungry last night so just had a few mouthfuls of salad and some spinach and artichoke dip before going to bed at 10pm.

Woke up famished at 4.30am and had some cheese. Now sitting here at 5.30 am in the USA eating muesli out of a coffee cup in my hotel room. Ha ha.

Gotta love jet lag and time zones screwing with your body.

Re:June 2009 bandits Reply to this message
Yeah I wish I was full off that much food!
I have been eating far less, but not as little as that... I have found that breakky is the hardest for me though, I tried to have a peice of toast the other morning and it was a definite no-no.
Bread is really becoming hard to stomach, but I can have a little bit if it's later in the day.

Otherwise I'm doing well and would be great if I could stop grazing.

Breakky - 1 weet bix
Snack - Cup of soup/small can of baked beans
Lunch - can on salmon and some mashed potato
snack (grazing) - crackers, toast etc
Dinner - about 1 cup of food
then probably grazing on c-rap after dinner if I don't send myself straight to bed lol
Still, it's coming off slowly and I'm fine with that!

Re:June 2009 bandits Reply to this message
Wow - that is not much food. But awesome you are feeling full quicker, Fiona.

Me??......I seem to vary depending on time of month. My hormones seem to make a massive difference to hunger and tightness of band.
Sometimes two meals with a few small snacks (olives do it for me). Meals about a bread and butter plate size - half protein, half veggies. Often a salad at lunch is enough - but a decent size salad with meat or cheese.

Then some days it is 3 normal size meals. By normal, I mean like my skinny mum and sister would eat. But the great thing is, I stay satisfied longer.
Still never really feel full - could usually go on eating. My throat starts to hurt when I've eaten too much, rather than feeling full.

I'm in the USA at the moment and very happy I didn't have any band problems on the plane. If anything it got looser - I was really hungry and ate every meal and all snacks, plus some from home.

Weird thing is - I feel I am eating a fair bit - definitely not like a 5 year old - and I'm eating some bad stuff, but still losing.

All v.strange.

Well wishes to all.

Re:June 2009 bandits Reply to this message
Hi all

Long time no post... things have been moving very slowly for me- prob cuz my band wasn't tight enough... and then school holidays happened and I pigged out on 'slider' foods with the kids - damn that chocolate & icecream! have only lost about 12kg or so since June

Anyways... had a fill last week and had 2ml put in, so think I'm up to 7ml in an 11ml band -- I actually felt it tighten this time.... and I can no longer eat much! woohoo!!

It's been an interesting experience and think that this is what it should have been like from the get-go. I am filled up very quickly and can survive on very little. Most mornings I have my optifast breakfast - am so not a breakfast person, so this is nice and easy for me... Yesterday I adventured to cornflakes... 4 spoonfuls and 1 strawberry later I couldn't fit any more in... and this morning hubby fried and egg & toast for me... well, that all just came back - what I could manage to get down... The doc scheduled me for another fill this coming thursday but will def cancel as I know that if anything it is too tight... but I'm happy to have it this way until xmas... I really really need this to help me cut back on my eating ability. We're going away on Dec 10 and I think I will leave it as it is until the week before we go... probably just have the last 2ml taken back out for comfort sake more than the need for extra room for scoffing on holidays!

Anyways... I've started recording what I eat as it is quite astounding for me... so let me know if you think this is similar to what quanities you all are eating..

B/fast: Optifast drink
snack: tea or coffee (not always have this)
lunch: 100ml yoghurt + banana (takes me about 1hr to eat all this)
snack: 1 or 2 saltine crackers or mango (whatever is easy)
dinner: small slice of quiche/fritata, or 3/4 cup "casserole" type food
snack: fruit or yoghurt or icecream (1 scoop)

If I manage to eat all this without puking (dinner is hardest) then I'm doing ...

Hey guys

Just thought I'd update you on my travel insurance research:

Southern Cross Travel will cover the band with a $100 premium. I was able to process my insurance online. The underlying insurance was cheaper than all competitors, so I'd be careful to check that they cover what you think you will need.

QBE will consider it 1 year plus.
Suresave potentially 6 months plus.
Worldcare travel insurance - 24 months plus with $100 loading.

NRMA and Comminsure - you need to fill out a form and have it signed by your doctor before they will consider.

I'll probably swap to a 'name' brand once I'm past the waiting period.

Hope that helps people.
