Happy, Happy, Happy ( shhh 21st ) Birthday Shelly!
We will certainly raise our glass to you, today over lunch!
Karen,
Guess what???...you are normal! Everyone at first wonders why they can eat so much....many say that the only reason they know they have had the op is b/c they have scars on their stomach. Once you begin having your fills you'll soon eat less. Unfortunately it could take months so some willpower is required!
TED's are the horrible white stockings we had to wear in hospital ( too early for my brain to remember what their technical name is! LOL )...thus at the inaugural gathering they were still on our minds! Mind you we call each other coffee tarts these days...so that would works for us too! Won't be long and we could call the group the Skinny Minis!
Profast,
Good to hear that k.D will do you thru the puplic system. Well stay on here, read up, ask questions and do come to a few GTs when you can. It's great to have the support system in place before the op!

Hi Marion and Vikki, thanks to both of you for the feedback, advice and support.
I'm new to message boards and to the etiquette that they require, so be gentle with me if I make a few errors. I must say though, so far I am thoroughly impressed by them.
Well it seems I have no need to take out private health insurance after all. Apparently I qualify for surgery as a public patient. The time frame (around 12 months)is about the same, so I feel very lucky. I will certainly have plenty of time to do my research!!!
I brought my first Omnifast today based on the Dr's recommendation. He also suggested trying appetite suppressants before saying "there is no way he would ever consider having this surgery done himself". The apt was all over in about 7 mins. At least the paperwork was time consuming - that took at least 30 mins. LOL
Thanks for the invite. Tomorrows no good for me, but I look forward to meeting you both at future get-togethers.
Cheers lllll
P.S I have to go back in another 6 months, by which time I will be full bottle on everything or alternatively on the way to my goal weight. |

Vikki,
I am just curious what TEDdy stands for? Hope you all have a great lunch tomorrow. Just as well I can't join you as it feels like I haven't even had a band. I think I could just about eat anything. Haven't gone too crazy yet but it does take some control not to.
Cheers everyone and enjoy tomorrow.

I'm rather achey, firstly from my workout Monday. Calves a little tight from JL. And absolutely whacked from 50 minutes of boxing this morning. Then we took the dogs on the beach at Secret Harbour.
Yes, I'm looking forward to a day off from exercise tomorrow too.

Hey Profectasset...how did it go with k.D ( Dr Dolan )???
vikki
PS I meant to say we 'TEDdy Coffee Tarts' have had a GT at the Casino. However you may be thinking of the Bandster gals 'The Bandgropers' as they go there quite often I believe. I went last year to one and they are a fun bunch too. Well you wouldn't expect anything but from WA folk, would you? |

So you are diving with sharks....for your birthday!! OMG I couldn't think of anything worse...unfortunately that's my phobia...SHARKS.
I only have to dangle my foot is our pool and I can hear:

Hi profectasset,
Banding is far from the easy way out, if you want to make a bandit see red just tell them either that they are "Cheating" or "Taking the easy way out".
The band will only work if you work with it. Please ignore the negavity of these people around you and think of yourself and your health.
Anyone who thinks they are going to have an easy ride with the band might as well forget about having the procedure. If you have read some of the threads on here you will see that even with the band weight loss is still a struggle. I have been at goal for 18 months now and every day is still a battle for me. It's like there are 2 Marion's, one who wants to go back to the old habits and the new who loves exercise and tries her hardest to keep the old Marion at bay.
Yes you have to be with an insurance provider for 12 months to be covered. I am with HBF. You pay the gap between the surgeon and anesthetists fees and the medicare/HBF rebates. I paid about $1800 3 years ago. I think the gap is probably around $2200 now.
We have our get togethers all over the place. We have a lunch at the Greenwood Hotel tomorrow at 12.30 if you can make it. We would be very pleased to see you and you can ask all the questions you like. It is great for us all to be able to talk our heads off to people who REALLY understand were we are coming from. The support in our group is totally amazing!

Hi profectasset,
You would need to be covered privately for 12 months before a fund will pay up....not sure how you'd go though seeing the specialist before you actually join. That's a good question!
So is it Dr Dolan that you are going to see?...I'm wasn't sure by your post. B/c if he is your surgeon you can certainly ask him anything. He's a great guy...dry sence of humour so be prepared! LOL
Check out the Perth Get-Together thread and come along to one of our G-T's. You will get soooo many of your questions answered in an hour or so over coffee. We have a great bunch of bandits...some at goal, others well on their way and others just starting this journey.

Hi girls.
After a last minute cancellation I have my first apt tomorrow.
I am seriously considering lap banding as my weight has ballooned from 65 to 95kgs in just a few years. This is partially due to other health issues (inc. a very bad back) which have led to my being unable to work as there are days I can barely walk. As such I am often sedentary. My BMI is now at 34.
In addition, I find I now eat too much not because I am hungry but because I am bored and a little lost. My Dr desperately wants me to loose weight in order to reduce the strain on my joints, as do family and friends, but no one I know believes in “taking the easy way out” (not my words).
I haven’t completed as much research as I would have liked as I was not anticipating this apt for another month. As I have no private insurance nor any health concerns that are considered to be government priorities i.e. -fit the morbidity criteria, I imagine I will need to cover all the costs.
I could join a health fund I suppose, but it doesn’t seem particularly ethical to exploit the system. And would the procedure be covered anyway given I would be joining after having my first appointment?
As I can not discuss this with family or friends given their attitude towards those who struggle with their weight, I would appreciate any advice at all. Thanks - I feel better for having got that off my chest. |
