Hi Terry,
Everything was fine until about a year after I got to goal. I then had a problem with stretched oesophagus and began to get very severe acid reflux. I would wake up choking at night and got very little sleep. Since then it has been a constant battle trying to set a balance between reflux and restriction. I was 58kgs at goal and I crept up to 72kgs. I managed to get back down to 63.5kgs after a stay at a diet and exercise retreat but now I'm back up to 65.5kgs.
I had a talk with Steve Watson, who is my banding surgeon and he said that because of my problems the sleeve maybe a better option for me. He refered me to Dr Alan Thomas and I went to see him. He will be removing my band next week and will do the sleeve for me in January.
I never imagined having to do this and I still think having the band was the best thing I've done for myself. But things change and we have to do what is best for ourselves at the time.

Ali, have been attempting to email you. last few have come back.
I had no idea your story including your Mums Oes. cancer was so like mine. My Dad also developed same later. both Mum anmd Dad fought it and won about 10 and 5 years back.I totally understand your concern as I breathed a sigh of relief yesterday to hear I am probably OK in that area.
Originally banded Aug 06,I had the band repositioned due to a slip in April 08,,it was placed differently as had slipped upwards. Had no reflux ever till after that.So they withdrew all the fill and I have been empty 5 months now . I put weight on in that time and am furious with myself of course.
So yesterday I finally saw Surgeon and we tried a fill for last attempt. The option open to me after that is Bypass of course.Watch this space. Hope to talk to you soon. Hugs to you and Kim from Carol and April |

Hi Meadowfireflye
I had my lapband 3 years this November, and developed reflux just over a year ago , i had a gastric swallow done , nothing showed , then had a endoscope which showed oesophagitis grade 1,was treated with a high dose of ( 80mg) of somec and some fill removal to which i had initial relief.
The downside meant i could eat too much, and thought there is no point of having it in.
I asked him could it be possible that my band was put in to low, as i always felt uncomfortable eating in the upright position, was better on a slouch and it helped the regurgitation which was the main issue not "burning. His answer was no he would put it in the same place again, although told me i could have a hiatus hernia, that is not showing up .well any way i went in for surgery last friday . yes i did have a hernia and on my! Request He moved my band quite a few inches higher , which means i have barely a pouch very "small" one, because of it being so high.
I am feeling very optimistic about it , .So watch this space until i start having fills again.
I am close to goal weight , and have had issues with the band but i would do it all again. I did not have to pay anything out of pocket, as to having a sleeve done would have been starting a fresh as you know Kevin won't do them , Also My Mum has recently been diagnosed with Cancer of the oesophagus ,which has raised a few concerns for me too .
Hope this helps with whatever your outcome is .Good luck Ali |

Marion,
I don't get on the site much anymore so was shocked to see that you are having the band removed and a sleeve done.
If you don't mind me asking, what happened?
When I was looking into getting the band done I read your story and your success has always been an inspiration for me.

Oh and Meadowfirefly what were your symptoms that led you to go back to see Dolan in the first place...was it just reflux? Are you still able to eat what you normally have been able to?
Thanks

Felice, I would highly recommend that you pop into the sleevers forum as theyre are a few that have converted from a band to a sleeve.
www.gastricsleevesupport. com
I have a BPD and not a sleeve but the stomach part is similar. I have no issues at all with reflux and I suffered terribly with it before. I can eat or drink immediately before going to bed. Hmmm lets see, I can eat spicy foods again..yay. Raw veg and fruits are great now and I can eat meat, like steak and roast and I can eat out without a fuss or have a 6 inch sub at subway...I can drink with meals. Gawd the difference is huge, I of course have the intestinal bypass which is not for the faint hearted, but hey i'm enjoying the results.
If you want to ask me anything just drop me an email or catch me on facebook. More than happy to help if I can.

Felice email sent :)
K I know close to nobody who is happy with their second band. I know a lot of people very happy who have gone from a band to a sleeve. when the band works it works well but you can not live a life of reflux or a permant diet that doesnt allow you to eat fresh fruit veg any way you like and meat wihtout cooking eating rituals. It is all good for those who manage to get to goal and be able to do it all without the reflux or the restricted diet, but it is tough on those that end up fighting the whole way then find they gain when they finally remove some fill to get rid of the reflux or eat the healthy stuff they want.
I can not stress enough I think the band is awsome when it works, it just doesnt work for everybody and long term I am seeing more and more even with no problem for years now with problems.

This is really interesting.
I got to a year with little problems and then it took 6 months to diagnose the enlarged oesophegus.
Apparently, there are a lot of 'slippages' being diagnosed that are actually enlarged oesophegus (cos if the band slips down it looks the same on xray)
Anyhooooo - I was told that treatment is to remove and wait a few months before re-banding - but I am looking at a few people who are getting sleeves instead to see how they go.
