Re:May 09 Bandits! Reply to this message
Wow Col 44kgs that is awesome. I bet you have a spring in your step. While waiting to be banded I have been suffering from a really sore back. I reckon my weight is contributing and my bed is not even coping with me any more. So it makes me even more determined to get this weight loss happening. At my age (44) I should be much more active with fewere (weight related) health problems.
Doubt I could even sleep with my man in a kombi.Lol.
6 weeks till banding,
Cath

Hi Crystal, i'm amazed that you only needed a fasting blood prior to surgery. They will test your blood sugars and cholesterol. I have had about eight tubes of blood taken for every test under the sun plus an ecg, chest x ray and five appointments (surgeon, nurse, dietician, physician and psychologist). I live an hour from the hospital/Drs rooms so its a bit of back and forth.
I have read somewhere on these boards about Tony Ferguson Vs Optifast so check the optifast thread.
Good luck, Cath

My surgery is booked for the arvo of 12May with Dr George Hopkins at Holy Spirit Hospital Brisbane. Wish it was sooner (he offered to do it 2 days after my appt with him .. but couldn't get holidays then)as I hate waiting for something .. especially as I know my nerves will build up over this time. I see the dietician next Monday so should find out then if I have to do the Optifast thing. Does anyone know if Tony Ferguson shakes could be substituted .. they taste much nice than Optifast!!!
BTW the surgeon only spent a few mins with me on my initial visit .. no physical exam or history taking ... is this normal?? And all I have to do before turning up for the surgery is a fasting blood test a week before .. ohhhh and pay the surgeon of course lol

I'm back! I'm getting excited now! only 10 weeks to go! Nearly have my Super Funds sorted out, just waiting on a new letter from the Surgeon as the first one didn't have the correct wording. Then its all steam ahead. I've decided to try and do optifast for 2 weeks before the surgery, if i cant stand the taste i'll do celebrity slim (one i know i like the taste of) which will hopefully do the same sort of thing.

For starters, I am going to be banded on May 15th at Essendon Private. I am starting at 106kgs and have seven in my household so cooking for them post banding will be a bit of a challenge. Hope to hear from you all, Cath

Cath,
you will meet people in the same situation as yourself, may be through your surgeons rooms etc..
a lot of doctors have support groups in conjunction with other people like excersise trainers etc. and Psychologists.
you are not alone.

Re:May 09 Bandits! Reply to this message
Thanks Angel, thats what I thought too but the thing was I didn't expect the negativity to come from her. There is definitely a list of people who I have no intention of discussing lap banding with but these were my first few tentative steps towards having a little supportive circle of friends I could be open with. Oh well, I will be more aware next time.

Re:May 09 Bandits! Reply to this message
Cath, she is probably jealous as you are taking the first steps to become healthy.
you are A STEP ahead of her.
I only talk to people who are supportive, you don't need any negativity.
I have it with my sister, who does not have a weight issue, but she is so in control ie excersise etc. so I don't talk to her about it, and its never mentioned.

Kellie, I am very interested to hear how you get on adjusting your insulin while on the optifast as I have had quite a few hypos since I started insulin last year.If you would like to communicate via email my adress is catherijn@bigpond.com

Re:May 09 Bandits! Reply to this message
Thanks Angel. I would like to hear how others have coped with the reactions of friends and family when telling them of your planned surgery. I told a friend the other day whom I was sure was going to be supportive (she is also a big girl who has mentioned having lap band surgery to me once) and she said " you don't need that surgery, you just need more will power". Needless to say I am reluctant to share my plans with anyone else.
