Re:Insulin resistance Reply to this message
Maggles,

I wish I could tell you how soon after surgery you could expect an improvement. I found a significant improvement while on Optifast and by the time I was banded was actually off all medication at the time of banding.

I have noticed though the most people find their BGL start improving almost immediately.

I wish you well.

Re:Insulin resistance Reply to this message
Hi All

I am insulin resistant and despite efforts have crept closer and closer to diabetes over the past couple of years despite trying to eat healthier foods. I have just had my surgery four weeks ago and I wondered if anyone had stories of how sugar levels corrected for them, how soon and at what weight loss levels. As I am not actually diabetic I guess there will be no rush for my doc to send me back for rechecking for a while but I am curious.

Re:Insulin resistance Reply to this message
sometimes not eating enough can raise insulin as is the case of overnight readings being high due to over night fasting.

I think it would prob help to lift the protein intake more...try adding some whey protein powder ( not the soy it tastes aweful) into your soups etc.

It will lift your calories as well as your protein and in effect should help keep the insulin in check. Try substituting cauliflower for potato etc.

You prob already know all of this stuff and I am just waffling... I would probably contact the doctor as well... oh and try really really hard to keep up with the pure water..

Re:Insulin resistance Reply to this message
Hi,
Its not my BGL that is fine. I have Hyperinsulinamemia. This means that when I eat carbs my body does not use them efficiently and my pancreas over produces insulin and in turn turns it into fat because I would have to be working out non stop to burn it. I have been eating lower carb soups etc, still being careful of the carb intake and still it is so high. I have bought a low carb protein shake from the health food store too. I am getting a little stressed about this because I cannot seem to get in under control, even with my small amount of food per day. Even my doctor is perplexed and cannot understand why this is happening. It is very frustrating.

Re:Insulin resistance Reply to this message
this early in the game its still difficult to control sometimes particularly if you are having carbo loaded liquids and mushies.

Keep a look out for the carb rating on your intake because as Pyretta has pointed out if you are in the 30's you seriously need to get it down.

Try lifting your protein intake and watch out for the up and go's etc...the carbs in them are high

Re:Insulin resistance Reply to this message
Bec,

Are you taking any medication to bring you levels down? When you say you levels are 32, is thew your BGL?

BGL shoud ideally be between 3.4 and 6.

Most peoples BGL do go down with weight loss.

Re:Insulin resistance Reply to this message
Hi,
I have Insulin Resistance and my insulin level is still high after surgery. I was banded 2 weeks ago and I have been very careful and my insulin levels are still 36. I am confused and not too sure what to do. My doctor has told me my levels need to be between 2 - 10. I am so frustrated. Has this happened to anyone else?

Re:Insulin resistance Reply to this message
my band had slipped. l had previous surgerys for other reasons and scar tissue and adessions had grown over the band causing it to be difficult to get the right amount of fluid in it. It was also causing severe reflux. The bypass is the next obvious step. It has now been 6 weeks since the bypass and l have lost 13 kgs

Re:Insulin resistance Reply to this message
'goodmorning,

Looks like a rainy day today...I am tossing up whether or not to climb Mount Kira this morning. They say going up hill reduces triglycerides...and going down hill lowers blood sugar. Seeing as there are no down hill tread mills I use the mountain.

Good luck tomorrow deb..hope it all goes well. You will probably never have to worry about becomming diabetic ever again...my doctor days bye-pass surgery is the only known CURE for the disease. If you don't mind my asking. What was the problem you had with the band?

Farney..i don't get your surgeon..or maybe i don't understand metaformin...I thought metaformin was to reduce levels? Is it just an appetite suppressant.

hey.. pretta I wish my levels were DOWN in the 6 mine are often in the 9-10 and higher.

Maybe I had better walk that mountain...it's not raining yet.

Re:Insulin resistance Reply to this message
Yes my levels improved greatly l was boarder line diabetic before banding was done and then when l was tested again all levels were within normal levels. The problem is the more your levels are wacko the more weight you gain. The more weight you have the more your levels are out. It is a continuing circle you cant get out of and fotunately the banding broke the cycle to help me take control. Unfotunately for me l started having problems with the band and had it removed 3 months ago and the weight is coming back real quick. My Dr told me l would have the same problems down the track so another band was not a good option for me. But others go on to never have complications with bands.l'm booked for gastric bypass 5 Dec. Even though my weight has gained l have not had major problems with my levels yet, but l'm looking forward to the op before they go out of control again

Re:Insulin resistance Reply to this message
Farrynasha,

I was taken off Metformin prior to banding because I had great weight loss and was told I didn't need it. I have since been put back on it, more as an appetite suppressant than anything until I get good restriction. MY BGL were also up in the 6 range ad just taking one a day has me back down in the low 5s.

Re:Insulin resistance Reply to this message
I have insulin resistance too and have been on metformin 1000mg 3 times a day pre banding. My surgeon said he didn't care if I took it ever again post banding but I thought it would only help with the weight loss. Does anyone else take metformin? Just wondering what you have been doing post op with it?

Re:Insulin resistance Reply to this message
Hi l have insulin resistance it is a symptom of the PCOS l have. l lost 35 kilos after the banding. You still have to watch what you eat and exercise (not to Many sweet things) but it did make the loosing of the weight obtainable. l know with the insulin resistance its a uphill battle and the band is a good diet aid

Re:Insulin resistance Reply to this message
Hey bernadette...have you heard of haemochromatosis...iron overload.

My whole family has it. To get rid of the excess iron you give blood.

It is very dangerous to have high iron...I was told that you die from this disease...if left untreated. The only problem is so many people suffer with it and don't know they have it. The iron affects your vital organs and you get a disease like...diabeties, alzhmers(sic) , cancer ect.

OH..i just realised you said you were insulin resistant...I don't want to worry you. I have diabeties too and it is not to do with the iron overload. Take the high iron seriously though check it out. Donate some blood. And see another doctor.

Re:Insulin resistance Reply to this message
Hi rose all...

I am type two diabetic and had the lap band because losing weight makes my diabeties improve. However, I think I would chose to have a gastric bypass if i did it over. Maybe in a few more months if I start lossing more weight and my diabeties improves..I will change my mind. I was lapbanded in August. My diabeties is still out of control.

My surgeon told me with gastric bypass diabeties goes without any weight loss...He said they are not sure why but suspect it has to do with the hormones that are cut out from the top of the stomach.

Re:Insulin resistance Reply to this message
I'm also insulin resistant, but the surgeon or doctor didn't even comment on the blood tests when I had them. Also way too high in iron (not sure what you do about that), high cholesterol. I think except for the iron, this could be common in people overweight. I went on shakes 2 weeks pre oop and am now 1 week post op, and have lost 11 kgs. That feels great, but I'm still bloated and uncomfortable. I wish I had gone into these forums pre surgery so I would know what to expect. I didn't get much info at all from the surgeon

Re:Insulin resistance Reply to this message
Roserosey and Pilbara,

I'm with you both. I have insulin resistence, PCOS and an underactive thyroid. I have lost 10 kgs on a low carb diet, and I did it in the first 3 weeks. Now I'm on Optifast for 2 weeks before my work Christmas party. I've already lost another 1kg. My surgery is Jan 6.

I'm very pleased so far and plan to continue a low carb diet once I get back to the mushy phase.

All the best,
Cat

Hi guys :-)

One of my reasons for having a band was that with PCOS and Insulin resistence I was Infertile - 1 1/2 years after it I am 'normal' - what more could a girl want :-D
