Hi Sharon,
I'm answering for my friend Lynne. "I had gastric bipass surgery done by michael talbot, on 2/2/07 and have lost 62 kilos to date. The operation itself was much better than I feared it would be, my hospital stay was 6 days. I had an excellent recovery. When you eat you have to be aware of the texture of foods or else they will not sit comfortably and will come up as with pb. You have to eat slowly and chew very well. In the loo department, I don't have any problems even though I take Panadeine forte for back pain. I take metamusal if necessary and go about every 2nd day. Only the f a r t s are smelly. Some foods make me feel sick but I keep testing myself to see if i can tolerate them after a month or two. Fizzy drinks are out and alcohol affects you much faster 'after 1/2 a glass i'm anybodies'. I waste a lot of food and are brave enough to ask for a doggy bag when eating out.
I take a multi vitamin and vit D and have vit B12 injections at varying intervals depending on blood tests (1 - 3 months apart).
Anything you go through is worth it because i have a new life and i would do it again in a shot".
Lynne hopes it all goes well for you and wishes you a wonderful future.
Regards
Brydie |

Hi Sharon
I have a band but I know of 2 women in my town who have had bigger things done by Dr Talbot. I will try to get them involved on these threads. Just give me a day or 2 as I don't know their surnames to phone them. All the best with your research. Do you have any reason why your band didn't work as well as you wanted it to?
Regards

Hi just wondering if anyone has had the biliopancreatic diversion? I have a lapband presently (two years almost) but not lost much weight so going to have BPD but would love to hear from some already had it done.
Its a big operation with side effects (malabsorption hence great weight loss but diarrhoea and odourous flatulence as well!)

Thanks Youagain!!!
I had tried to turn the page but it just wasn't happening. Now I have and I have no idea how I did it. It's hard to teach an old dog new tricks. But I am trying.
"Very" I hear you saying. I'll hang in there if others will too. At least my band is behaving.
Thanks again to everybody .

Hi Brydie
I'm not sure if you are aware but there are many many pages on this site. As new posts appear the older ones goes to page 2, then 3... So your previous posts are there, they just don't appear on the first page anyone. Hope this helps. |

Hi Pearl,
I don't understand all this message board stuff and thought I had answered you but it doesn't appear here. It is now 13 days since my banding and I feel great, more energy that before and nearly all healed up and only have to hold my tum when I sneeze with hayfever (don't you hate that?) I was back driving in about 5 days and only took some kids panadol for about 3 days post op. You will notice improvement every day. If your job is at all physical then be guided by Michael but he will probably suggest 2 weeks. I go to see him on Friday so that will be interesting. Just ask any other questions you like. Oh windy pains can be a bit much but I found a little firm pressure and relaxing when nobody is about worked well. Some people swear by peppermint tea for it but I like chai or rooibos so that may have worked for me.
All the best for your plans of a lifetime

Hi Pearl,
I think I'll go mad with this posting stuff, I'm sure I sent you a message this morning. I am 10 or 11 days post op and feeling great, no complications and all going well. I'm mixing up what I eat with my LO shakes. I ran the tape over this morning and I have lost 2 - 3 cms ALL over, with a total lose of 7 kilos. Just take life easy afterwards and do as you are told by your surgeon. Look after your new baby stomach and it will look after you later. All the best and regards

Hi Pearl,
My band is now 11 days old with me and I am feeling just about back to normal but lighter. My knee replacements are feeling better and I am doing everything else that I want to except lifting heavy loads and getting out of chairs without holding my tummy. If you have a desk job I think you would probably be OK after 1 week off. Maybe have the op on a Friday and cheat a couple of days. Michael will tell you straight what he thinks anyway. I am not regretting my decision one bit.
Regards and all the best

Hi Pearl, I've been away for 2 days, so not at the computer. I'm now 11 days with my band and I feel great but I don't work so have had time to loll about and take things easy. If you do any taxing work I'd take 2 weeks off but be guided by the doctor. I ran the tape measure over myself and have lost 2 - 3 cms everywhere, and that is exciting. I last measured and had photos taken the night before I started on the VLCD (shakes). It is an exciting journey and there are many fellow travellers so step out with confidence and just feel the changes.
Good luck and keep in touch. Regards

Sorry Pearla (spelling error).....I waited the 12 months necessary before the Private Health Insurance cover could be used. The time raced by and it gave me more time to research all options of obesity surgery....it's a big decision.
Hope this helps. |

Hi all
Brydie good to hear to are feeling well and everything has gone OK. You must be feeling very happy and pleased. Look forward to hearing more of your journey.
Pearaa, hi I didn't need to apply to APRA to cover the costs of my surgery as I have Private Health Insurance. But for those who don't they can apply for a release of funds from their Superannuation Fund to cover the costs if it is considered by their doctor to be life threatening. Some doctors won't do this and apparently Dr Talbot is one of them....I don't know of this first hand and it is something you would have to talk over with him as each patient is different. My GP's Triage Sister told me I would not be considered as a 'life threatening' case as even though I carry exessive amounts of weight around my middle area I also carry it all over (guess you would if you were 160 kilos) so it appears the weight needs to be only around you middle only from what I can gather. But anyway I digress.
I was advised quite strongly not to have the operation without being in a Private Health Fund due to the risk of having to have further surgery which apparently is quite common. Private Health Insurance covers the cost of the theatre which runs into thousands and only refunds a small amount (under $1000 if I remember correctly) on doctors bills. Then of course you have the anaesthetist's fees varing from $1000-$2000.
I am having the sleeve done on December 8 and can't wait. |

Hi Suziq, My band is now 3 days mine and my doctor is Michael Talbot. I think he is laid back, a brilliant surgeon and a funny person as well. He has the ability to put you at ease very quickly. I hope he doesn't get a swelled head if he reads all this.
I am feeling better each day and now only have a little tenderness and no shoulder pain (I had very little anyway) its nice to know that there are a few people in Sydney on these chat boards, many from Melb and Adelaide.
Keep on doing the right thing everybody cause your new 'baby stomachs' need you to be kind.
Regards, Brydie |

Hi farrynasha
Yes I'm quite pleased with Dr Talbot as my surgeon. I too will be having my surgery sometime end of Nov early Dec.
I won't be applying to APRA as I have private health insurance and can pay the out of pocket expenses...but thanks for that tip anyway...it could help others to know that information.
Cheers |

| Hi, I will be having surgery by Dr talbot in a few months, and so far also think he is great. Just something to keep in mind if you are planning to apply to APRA,he will not write a letter with the words life threatening illness so the application wil be knocked back. If this is the only way you can pay for surgery you may need to consider another surgeon. |
