Hi everyone!
I hope you are all going well on the straw diet and feeling good post op.
I had my surgery in March and again in June so i am past this stage technically however, i am having a band rejection and at the moment my stomach will not tolerate solid food except rice crackers and seeds.
Please post any good smoothie recipes, simlpe but tasty soups and any other tips for someone who is sick of the same old fluids!!
At the moment i am having peach iced tea, iced coffee Big M, Banana smoothies, Gloria Jeans coffee chillers, Cappuchillo's and chicken soup. I am also having hot green tea with Jasmin and iced green tea with peach and pear-YUM.
Start throwing more ideas at me PLEASE!
Thanks.

I've just re rad the first post on this thread and I think it deserves reposting!!!
Thanks Jen!
thought i would start this one because we havent got this info up for new banders yet.
This info should not replace the guidelines of your surgeon or dietician.
immediately post op you wont be able to have much for a few hours, and you must sip slowly!!! pehaps 50mls at a time for a while. (everyones experience is different but this is pretty much what you can have)
anything you have must be thin enough to fit up a straw, and have NO LUMPS. if you need to water things down try doing it with milk which helps with PROTEIN .
liquid vitamins are important (IRON is essential)
immediately post op -
ice chips or water
next day- (after baruim swallow if that is your surgeons thing)
clear broth
apple juice
peppermint tea (good for the wind)
jelly?
day 2 you should be able to start milk drinks -
sustagen, up n go, tea or coffee, milo, etc
soup but still thin
drinking yoghurt
vegie juice
prune or pear juice if you are having issues moving your bowels.
ww custard with extra milk to be thin enough(yummm)
ww mousse
smoothies
snack pack
ice cream
i put anything im not sure of through a sieve before i have it.
by day 4 or 5 you possiby could drink 250ml in about half an hour to an hour.
by then end of your 2 or 3 weeks of liquid you can start thickening up your things in preparation for mushy stage.
hope this is helpful!
just to keep this kicking-
i am absolutely loving frozen yoghurt at the moment! and its great for internal swelling, comes in little 100gram tubs which are just the right size, slides down beautifully and is 98%fat free |

klun,
That;'s okay, we all had to learn our way around here when we first started.
A sticky thread is just a topic like this one that is glued to the top of the front page.
The Optifast one that I referred to is here:
http://au.messages.yahoo.com/health/lap-band/69/
Just copy and paste the link into your address bar and remove and spaces that might be in it then press enter.
Best of luck

| I'm being banded tomorrow and did a big grocery shop today to be ready for when I get home and have no energy. I found some great milk flavourings in my local grocery, I got French Vanilla, Fruit Smoothie, and Brazilian Hazelnut, they are fat-free when used with Skim milk so that should be good, along with Nesquik. I also bought a stack of tiny 200ml containers and filled them up with strained chicken broth and put them all in the freezer. I'm hoping Mum will be able to make me another nice soup tomorrow that we can also freeze and that should tide me over. I'm hoping that the soup, flavoured milks and juices will tide me over as I prefer not to have fattening yogurt and don't like any juices other than apple or orange. I did buy some custard mixes but will have to see how I go on the thinner liquids before I move on to those.... |

Hi Kat
I was banded on the 27th July, so am still in the soup, soup and more soup (over it!!)stage but have been told by my dietician that when i hit the mushies stage, i can start with scrambled egg . She also suggested i buy some healthy choice meals, and i can mash them up with the bamix so they are really mushy. She also suggested fish to be mashed up, potato n gravy, spaghetti (as long as it is mush)...pretty much anything you can think of, providing it can be mushed!! so, i have stocked the freezer with healthy choice lasagne, chicken fettucini and birds eye fish fillets in preparation for mushies!!!!!Cant imagine living on soup for more than 2 weeks...you have done so well!!Hope this has helped a little! |

Kat,
It can be scary at this time. Check out the sticky thread at the top of the page called mushies, there are some really great ideas for this transition stage there.

| Hi All. I was banded on 10 July 07 at a weight of 110.5 kg. I am now 102 kg and have been on post-op liquid diet for almost 4 weeks now, as I was directed to do by my surgeon. I was banded in Hobart. As of Tuesday 7 Aug 07, I am supposed to commence mushy solids and gradually work up to normal solid diet over the following 4 weeks. I do not have a clue what I should start off eating, how much to eat and I am terrified of putting back on the weight I have lost once I start solids. Over my liquid phase, I have consumed banana smoothies made with skim milk, soup, hot chocolate made with skim milk, soup, soup, pear juice, V8 juice and soup. That is it. Can anybody help me with ideas or personal experiences for the return to solid food phase? As far as I know, my band has no fill in it at present. My first fill is scheduled for 31 Aug 07. I look forward to this date with both trepidation and excitement. Hope to hear from someone. Cheers - Kat |

I don't think nesquik would be a problem. My surgeon told me that he didnt care what i had, as long as it was liquid.
He mentioned chocolate milk so nesquik would fall into that category. I personally had ovaltine - coz i used to love those little packets of solid ovaltine lollies. Do they still make them?? lol |

Hi everyone,
I've noticed that the surgeons instructions always say low fat milk only but I've noticed everyone is putting in Milo, cappucino etc. Does anyone know about Nesquik and if that would be ok? I'm not such a fan of milk and this will help get rid of the taste. |

Hi Janet,
Some medications should not be crushed, you need to speak to whomever prescribed them for you or your pharmacist. I purchased a tablet cutter and only used it for a couple of days. One of my diabetes tablets are very large and when the surgeon saw me he said I wouldn't have to do that as the stoma he made would take those tablets, and guess what no problems, I just take a good mouthful of water so they slush on down, along with the flax seed capsules, omega 3, caltrate, etc oh yes the centrum. I just spread them out over the day.
Cheers.

Hi Isabella
The Degas is for the gas in your tummy. It couldn't work on the other gas - I think you're right. Prof O'Brien says in his new book that the shoulder tip pain is actually referred pain from the diaphragm, and the best thing for that is a heat pack, although he also suggests a few other remedies including peppermint tea.

| My brain is just ticking over here, so go me! I'm thinking Janet is refeering to the 'surgical' gas pumped into her abdominal cavity during the op to create working space during her tube op. Not the burping and talking tushie kind of gas. Do the de-gas tablets work on the surgical gas? I wouldn't think so, its not in your stomach? Does anyone know for sure? If they do, wouldn't that offer some kind of relief for the shoulder tip pain a lot of people post op seem to get? |
