That is good, Yes I am also very keen to "do as I am told" at this stage, I don't want to do anything to upset the band at all.

Arn66au, when do you go over to mushies? I have to stay on liquids until I see the dietitian on the 14th, and then follow whatever she says.

Arn66au, I am not sure if it is that I "can't get it down", I probably could, but I feel full (like when eating too much in the past) and it does not feel comfortable, so I don't want to try. And I don't feel hungry. I probably need to maybe try starting a bit earlier in the day, as I think I probably NEED to get 3 Optifast down per day at a minimum to keep up with nutritional requirements.

I asked my Dr about sticking to 120mls of soup before discharge from hosp. He said to drink it til I felt I'd had enough plus 1.5lt water/day! It is odd we are all given such varying info from our Drs.

Wow Qui can't get the third shake down, that's amazing - I actually think I have been drinking them too fast and maybe they are the cause of some of the wind pains.

Isn't it so weird how it is so different for all of us???

I am feeling full Optifast and today I cannot get the 3rd one down. Not sure if that is normal or not. I have no problems with water or apple juice. I don't know what type band I have or if there is any fill in it. Maybe my stomach is still swollen, it is only 3 days yet.
The pains have gone, but I do get tired and my back gets sore accross the middle if I sit too long. Other than that, feeling good.

I have no idea what is going on also. Have been having 1/3 optifast with 1/2 banana in the morning and had pumpkin soup (about 150mls) and seem still to be hungry but am hesitant to have anything else until a little bit later, because I feel a little bloated.

Hi I am having the same problem Mike - getting hungry on the liquids. I am day 12. I was naughty this morning and had a couple of spoonfuls of my sons scrambled egg and I have been full ever since! I am paranoid about damaging my band! My 16 month old jumped right where my port wound is last night it was sore for ages I was sure it was damaged but feels ok today. I have an appoint with my dietician on Wed so hopefully it is on to mushies for me. Suzanne

Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
Di,

I have no problems drinking water or watery drinks, but with the Optifast I have to split it into about 3 lots as I get full. According to Prof O'Brian's book, yes he does state that if you thirsty, then drink, but if not thirsty, there is no need to force it. I am re-reading the book, expecially in regards to the first 4 weeks after surgery. He does also state in the book that each surgeon could have different rules and no book should come between doctor and patient relationship. But whatever rules your surgeon has set, if it becomes painful to stick to the volumes set, then maybe it is too much too soon, maybe check with him.

I feel a bit bloated at the moment, hoping it will disappear soon. Just taking it easy today, feel tired as my cough keeps me awake for a lot of the night, so I have not had enough sleep. I think my cough is getting better, it was a bit of a nuisance to end up with a cold/cough same week as surgery.

Mike,

Steer away from the bikkie. Ring your surgeons team and see if you can thicken up your liquids a bit more. Add lots of protein.

Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
I am not feeling hugry yet, I guess that will come. I can drink as much as I want, but with the Optifast I have to drink it in stages, maybe because it a bit thicker, and it makes me feel full. Yesterday I could only manage 2 shakes, but I had a little drinking yoghurt and a few spoon fulls of watery pumpkin soup, and also some prune juice.

My cough is stopping me from sleeping properly, I hope it will go away soon as it really hurts to cough. Other than that, I feel fine. Even slept on my stomach for a while last night, I must have moved on to my stomach in my sleep as I did not realise until I woke up. Did not cause any problems.

Di, don't be so hard on yourself - I have no idea what is going on!!! I can drink anything - maybe I have the worlds largest band, but I am not very good at pacing myself and have a big gulp of the ever lovely opti and it goes straight down. Are we supposed to be feeling restriction??

I am getting hungry regularly - just in time for another shake....I can really read real hunger at the moment, but the opti fixes it.

How are others feeling??

Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
Ok, call me dumb (I thought I wasn't but now I'm wondering), but its taken me 5 days to work out this liquid phase thingie. I think I have finally cracked it though and am looking forward to this being a little more enjoyable than it has been.

I am having 4 150ml 'meals' per day and when I drink I am having only about 100mls per drinking session. I wake up starving in the middle of the night, so keep a drink by the bed. You should measure out how much this really is, as it is nowhere near what I would have said was a meal or a drink pre-band. But don't have anymore in the glass or you will drink it and you will then be struck down with a gripping pain in your chest which is most unpleasant and makes your wonder whether this is all worth it!
You have to eat SLOWLY as suddenly, you will feel a signal between mouthfuls that you are full and if you have shovelled in two more spoonfuls since the one trying to signal you, you will also have an uncomfortable gripping pain and feel most uncomfortable for an hour or so.
I re-read Prof O'Brien's book on the relevant chapters and he suggests far less food than some others seem to be having on this board.
I was concerned with dehydration, lack of nutrients, bowel movements....the whole lot...and if you read his book, forget all this stuff. If you're thirsty - drink (measured amount), try and improve your eating as you go but don't go manic in the first few days, you're not eating hardly enough to warrant a bowel motion.
I went overboard and have had three days of chest wrenching pain all to try and get all these things in.

Hope this helps someone out there.
Di

Hi Everyone,
Day two for me today since banding, and going better. The muscle pain is easing, and can get up better now. The cough is still painful, so I cannot wait for that to go away. Drinking allright, have had Optifast, some drinking yoghurt, some very watery pumpkin soup, and a fair bit of water. It all seems to go down well, without any problems. The Optifast I have to drink in about 3 lots as it makes me feel full. I am happy with my recovery so far. I have no visible stitches, they are all disolvable ones, wounds look ok as far as I can see. I would not exactly want to run any marathons, but other than that feel quite fit.

So is Benefibre, available at chemists and supermarkets. I add to my OJ or breakie cereal. I am 5 days post op from repositioning of band. It had slipped after two years and over 40kgs of weightloss. I have found the recovery alot easier than last time as I know I am a lot fitter now.

Isnt it funny how we all get told different things!
I was told I could have 100mls every 10-15mins and to have at least 1.5L per day.
_________________________ _________

I was told work toward the 2 to 3 total fluids a day. including nutritional
but in between the 50 to 110 ms nutritional fluids x 6, to have a mouth full of other fluids every 10 mins
