Immediately post op you wont be able to have much for a few hours, and you must sip slowly!!! perhaps 50mls at a time for a while. (everyones experience is different but this is pretty much what you can have)
anything you have must be thin enough to fit up a straw, and have NO LUMPS. if you need to water things down try doing it with milk which helps with PROTEIN .
liquid vitamins are important (IRON is essential)
immediately post op -
ice chips or water
next day- (after baruim swallow if that is your surgeons thing)
clear broth
apple juice
peppermint tea (good for the wind)
jelly?
day 2 you should be able to start milk drinks -
sustagen, up n go, tea or coffee, milo, etc
soup but still thin
drinking yoghurt
vegie juice
prune or pear juice if you are having issues moving your bowels.
Low fat frozen yoghurt in little 100gram tubs
ww custard with extra milk to be thin enough(yummm)
ww mousse
smoothies
snack pack
ice cream
Put anything you're not sure of through a sieve.
by day 4 or 5 you possibly could drink 250ml in about half an hour to an hour.
by then end of your 2 or 3 weeks of liquid you can start thickening up your things in preparation for mushy stage.
There are some fantastic "liquid" recipes in this thread, just look back through the pages hope this is helpful! |

Baby,
Most of us are on Optifast pre op, which is nutritionally balanced so we don't feel as you do. Yes some of us feel a little week but not to the extent you are describing.
Pop on over to the Optifast thread, most of the pre op people are there for support during that phase. I have never heard of the "Glucerna" that you are on. Sorry.

Hi babycakes,
I have Pepsi Max but like pyretta i let it flatten a bit first and sip slowly, it's the bubbles building up that give you a pain because you can't burp as easily. Just remember no high calorie drinks though all it'll all be a waste of time for you . Best of luck

| that sounds so good to hear cause the thought of never drinking one again was about to kill me im having my surgery monday and thats the only reason i dont wanna go though with it i know that sounds crazy but thats the only thing i have ever drunk up until i have started my diet.I know i cant drink them all the time but i really hope i will be able to have a sip or two every once and a while. Is there a certain kind that is easier to drink than others? |

Baby,
I didn't have any during the liquids phase but did try some about 3 months post op and it caused a massive pain right in the middle of my chest.
I have had some since but I flatten it a bit first and still then only sip it, any pain and I stop.

I haven't tried the veggie soup but I have heard it is much better than the chicken soup.
I still don't understand why they got rid of the tomato soup, it really wasn't that bad.

sstephans,
post op I was having trouble getting, the required amount of fluids in anyway, but they can make you thirsty which is why I suggested the salt reduced stocks.
If you get thirsty just drink water, you need it post op anyway.

Thanks Pyretta,
I wondered if it might have been chicken stock or similar. Explains why I couldn't find anything but I have already got stock in my cupboards, although don't you find they leave you thirsty as they are very salty. |

Clear broth is just that: strained chicken stock, strained beef stock, bonox, I've even heard of people dissolving a teaspoon of Vegemite in hot water.
I found the easiest thing was dissolving a low salt stock cube for the first four days. The come in chicken, beef, bacon and veggie.

| When you say "clear broth" what is this? I have been trying to find clear thin soups in supermarkets but they all have vegies or noodles or something added. |
