Raelene,

STAY OFF THE SCALES. Now you will notice that a lot of liquid foods are actually calorie dense. Combine that with the Optifast stage that you've just been on and the body will store calories for a little while. It is all perfectly normal and to be expected.

This phase is all about healing. I wouldn't bother putting a toe onto the scales until you've seen you doc. (Usually 4 to 6 weeks post op)

Raelene,

when making the egg flip you need to make sure the egg is well combined (even whisking it wit a fork) before you put the milk in. I use a Tupperware shaker to do mine: 2 eggs and 2tsp of sugar, shaken really well then add a few drops of vanilla and 100ml of milk, shake again. add the rest of the milk (to 450mls) shake and then it's nice and frothy. no sign of egg white anywhere.

Good for about 3 meals in the liquid stage.

Hi Raelene, how did the surgery go, if you buy the sustagen, you might want to get the Hospital
Formula Sustagen from the chemist its low in fat and is high in protein, you could also ask family/friends to make you soup and blend it so you are getting a variety of foods, thats what i did and it made the liquid stage easier, cheers louise

Raelene,

There are any number of protein drinks on the market. I believe Sustigen has a high protein content. You can also make yourself egg flips or add protein powder to other drinks as well. The blended baked beans is great for protein and fibre. A recipe I was given was to blend a can of baked beans with a can of steak and veggies and then thin it down with beef stock. It made enough for days.

I don't think you've done any damage but you do need to be aware of why you are put on the liquids phase.

Jude,

What you are feeling is normal for some people, if you are healing well and fast you'll actually start asking if there is even a band in there. Trust me there is. There is still the risk of moving the band if it hasn't healed properly into place, which is why we are given the 2 weeks liquid 2 weeks mushie regime. It can take up to 6 weeks for it to heal into place properly.

You will hopefully feel some restriction with your first fill, but it may take a few fills. try to get your appointments every two weeks to start with until you feel some restriction.

Protein will help make you feel fuller longer, which is why we push the idea of egg flips, protein shakes and even blended baked beans thinned down.

Please follow you doctors or surgeons guideline.

raelene,

You really shouldn't be eating that if you haven't had the okay from your surgeon. Try protein liquids 6 times a day, up to about 2/4 to 1 cup full sipped over 20 minutes.

I'm just concerned you might be doing yourself damage that you may not be aware of. Your band needs time to heal into place.

Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
4 weeks of liquids???? That seems excessive. My doctor and dietician told me 1 week of clear thin liquids, another 1 week of liquids, then mushy for 1-2 weeks then soft for 1-2 weeks. From what I've seen around, this is pretty standard instructions...

My doctor said my body would start telling me when it was ready for more complexity at each phase.

Dry biscuits would probably be the worst thing you could have. Try a scrambled egg or a pureed chicken and vegetable soup. Something with protein and flavour. You don't want anything dry or clump-able!

Hi all
I had the banding op on Monday morning 17/8.
I haven't had to take any pain killers as yet, wed/thur had pain in the left shoulder.I am having two broths during the day at this stage, I don't seem to want to consume much. Have a couple small watered down apple juices. Have been passing wind and have found laying down is helping the discomfort in the stomach.Hopefully next week I will start on Kick/strart which is 30% carbs,30% protein and 30%fats. since Tues have lost 5 kgs.all the best.

Mary,

You can add protein powder to your fluids, but I just had egg flips and baked beans blended with a tin of steak and veggies and thinned down with beef stock. Tt was very very filling.

Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
Karen,

It is quite common and it is a sign that you are healing well internally. Try and stick with the fluids, make protein shakes and have a lot of protein fluids to keep you fuller longer. You probably don't need as much in the way for fruit juices now.
