Sorry, I meant to say that my surgeon goes on a Christmas break, Dec 19 - Jan 2. So that's another thing to think about.

It's not about making you wait due to your health coverage.

It depends on how booked up the surgeon is. Some surgeons are booked months in advance, while others can get you in within a few weeks.

My surgeon does not operate after Dec 19.

It took me about a month from my first appointment with Dr Hensman before i was due to be operated on, i went through my super to pay for most of it, and my private health cover. i had to pay for my first appointment dietician, physcologist and the physician firstly and then the bulk a week before surgery, i got back about $1000 from medicare and my healthfun, though.

hope that helps

Liz,

It's a sign you are healing well and your swelling has subsided. Please try and stick with fluids as this is really an important healing time, even hough the swelling has subsided.

Try just thickening your liquids.

Hi All,

this is my first post. I have been banded 1o days ago and am already on mushies, as liquids are not keeping me full and, has anyone else had this problem, or should i speak to my surgeon about it. i'm hoping my band hasn't slipped

i am to get my staples out tomorrow. Thankfully i havent had any pain since i had the op, hoping im just recovering really well.

any suggestions??

Bernadette,

For now you really need to stick with the liquids.

Try an egg flip sipped very slowly, it should give you a protien and carb boost. The protien is very good for healing.

2 eggs beaten together, add 500ml milk, 2 tablespoons of sugar and 4 drops of vanilla essence. wizz up with a hand blander and it should last at least 3 or 4 "meals"

I've also written a response on your thread.

I had my band 7 days ago and still feel bloated and windy. I also put on 3 kgs whilst in hospital and nobody believed me! Have lost it now though, but I feel very weak. If I have a shake, I want to throw up, no matter how slowly I drink, so I have to lay down. In fact by lunch time I'm exhausted. I think my work thinks I'm laying it on thick, but I really am having difficulty being 'active and normal'. I feel like I'm deprived of carbs and that's why I'm losing so much. 4 kgs last week, and 7 kgs, 2 weeks of pre-op shakes. I had no interest in food for first 5 days, now I look longingly at vegie on toast, and bread rolls. I would love a big carb boost

I have gone back to having a couple of Optifast shakes a day. My doc also suggested egg flips and smoothies. ALl are good for calories and protein.

Hope the nausea fades soon Kirsty

Kirsty,
Didn't I tell you that you would be fine and each day you would feel better than the last. But you must try to eat (sorry drink) some more calories to keep you going. The recipe for blended tinned fruit from Pyretta sounds lovely. Chill the can first maybe. I am still having little diet jellies that I have in a bowl with yoghurt over the top (I pretend its cream or icecream). The other question I have for you, you are not pregnant are you??? Cheaky question when I don't know your marital or partnered statis. Just joking, I think. Anyway, just keep going and trying your best. I see my doctor tomorrow, then I'll be on mushies I think but I have been having them already I think. Haven't been testing with the straw thing. Have lost 8 kg so far and I'm happy. People are starting to notice and not just the ones who know.
Spirits up and be good

Kirsty,

Yes you need to be getting more nutrition in. Chat with your dietitian or one of your surgeons teams and you can look through here for ideas as well.

Make sure you are at least having a multivitamin to aid with healing and recovery.

Hello Ladies, I havent written for a while so thought I would say hello!! Well I have been banded for 7 days tomorrow, each day is so much better than the last.. The wind pains have almost dissapeared. God I feel so much better. I have been having really bad nasea though but the doc prescribed something so they are helping.. Still very lethargic though.. I havent been having much in the days bar some yoghurt and water.. I know ofcourse that is causing the lethargy and nausea. Some times I think I just could not even eat soup then sometimes I feel sooo hungry and think i could eat anything!
I got my staples out yesterday and I cant tell you how good it felt, made all the difference in the world. i feel so mobile now and definatly less sore. I go back 2 weeks yesterday for my first fill. yay!

Thanks pyretta,
That sounds delicious - I'll try and remember that one - am being banded in 2 weeks. I think each phase sounds tastier than the last - something to look forward to! Natural, tasty liquids will be better than the optifast stuff i've endured over the weeks. Guess what - it has worked though - lost nearly 14 kilos and pushing for a bit more b4 the op!!

Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
Last night was so warm in Melbounre my daughter reminded me of something I used to have on the liquids stage that I had forgotten about.

Take a can of fruit, (fruit salad, pears, twofruits, apricots, etc), pour the fruit and liquid into a jug and wizz with a hand blender. It's healthier than fruit juice because you get the added fibre of the fruit and it mushes down to a refreshing drink, or can be poured over ice cream. It can be thinned down with apple juice if it's a bit thick for the early stages.

Pick fruit in natural juice instead of syrup.

Brydie,

No I'm not a nurse, just been around banding boards for nearly 4 years now so picked up a lot during that time. I also received a lot of support, still do, so i continue to pay it forward.

Yeah you can take the girl outta Victoria but you can take the AFL outta the girl!! LOL.

Pyretta,
Sorry, I thought you sounded so authoritative that you were a trained nurse. Since then I have read a bit more of your history on another thread and maybe you have all your knowledge from living the experiences. What a way to go, I take my hat off to you.
I lived in Sydney for 29 years and now on the South Coast but was raised in Geelong then lived in East Keilor for 4 years after we were married, so I am still a Victorian deep down and barrack for the Bombers.

Brydie,

Train? I do my aqua in Mill Park , a northern suburb of Melbourne. I just do laps, but i also use their gym as well. Must admit to not getting there as often as I should, but now recovering from port replacement, it'll be a few weeks before I'm back there again.
