| Thanks Tyseena, my alter ego is a surgical nurse and midwife so normally I'm the one providing the care. It's hard to become the patient and really scarey! My band is a really big secret that only my husband knows. My sisters are nurses, one in Sydney and one on the south coast but they would not understand about the band so I'm not sharing. Mack |

Mack I thought you were already banded. So we will be just 3 weeks apart. Good luck. Will be thinking of you and looking out for your update after. How long are you taking of work? I guess I'm a bit weird - sure I was nervous about the op, but actually I was also excited. I couldn't wait to feel in control - have never felt 'not hungry'. When you say your usual role is helping people having a lap band - do you mean work wise?
Keep in touch xx Tyseena |

| Glad to hear you are doing well Tyseena. My usual role is in assisting people having a lap band but next Friday I'm the patient. My start weight is 127 kilo which is pretty heafty since I am only 5'3". Mack. |

Hi Mack, I'm doing pretty well - better than I imagined and I've still got 1 week off :) Sometimes I don't feel I've been banded and others times the only discomfort is a tightness in the chest which follows with a lot of burping (burning has stopped). Otherwise great! I actually started to feel hungry last night, while cooking for the family. So I had a cup of chicken and corn soup and added tofu and soy beans and blended it all up. Was yummy. I just needed that savoury taste. I still feel full this morning.. I go to the dietician on Wednesday. Saturday is start of week 3 and mushies. Clothes I havent been able to wear for a long time are just starting to fit. My stomach is still large but starting to go down. Have lost 9kg including pre banding so am very happy with that.
What stage are you at?

Hi Cat,
Just wondering how you are now. My 1st week anniversary today!. I've been reading thru everyone's comments. I too got severe indegestion on the 4th day after thinking this was easy peazy (virtually no pain). But the indegestion and pain/burning in chest started - burping even after a sip started to worry me. I'm a lot better now - do have a discomford in centre of chest when I swallow but not too bad. Did this settle down for you in time?

| Hi there, Thanks for teh reply. Now going along really well - craved a piece of toast today and had it - have my first fill next week so a bit anxious about that. I like many can't feel any lapband and seem to be getting hungry quicker now. Eating lots of veges with gravy and pureed meat - big change from the liquids. Still have the odd optifast, I don't seem to have lost any weight for about a week - is this normal? I am now week 6 and have lost about 11 kgs |

Hi,
In Feb 2001, I was lapbanded and my pre op weight was 127.5kg. By 2003 I had lost 56.5kg and reached 71.0kg. Then I got pregnant (twice over) and my weight went up to 81kg. In Aug 2008 I went in and had a massive tummy tuck operation in which they removed 3kg of skin. Due to complications with the operation I was in hospital for close to 3 weeks and took a good 6 months to recover. After recovery and with much hardwork and torture to the point of stupidity I managed to bring my weight back down again to 72kg. However come August I needed to have all the fluid removed from my band due to slippage / dilation / erosion and in just under 1 month I have put on 8kg and now weigh 80kg which according to the BMI is classed as Obese!
On Monday 7th of Sept 2009, I once again went under the knife to have the problem fixed and be rebanded so that I can loose more weight and reach my goal of b/w 59kg - 74kg (based on 5ft 8").
I have to say that I cant remember being so sore the first time I got the band, its mostly the sharp pain in the shoulder blades and under the ribs and the bloated feeling. Today is day 5 on liquids although I have also been able to have soft purees and custard (as long as it can be sucked through a straw or melts in the mouth) but I get full really quickly and so Im not really feeling satisfied at all. I have low blood pressure and so am quite dizzy perhaps you should get this checked out too as it could be the reason you almost passed out. Too help with the pain and headaches Ive been having soluable panadol in a mouthful of water - tastes horrible but it helps. Ive been drinking prune juice as I am thinking alot of the bloatedness is due to no bowel movement. Well I hope this helps you to feel you arent alone.

HI
thanks Qiu for the info, I rang my doc yesterday & they confirmed the same thing. I am still a little tired I suppose thats normal, one day good the next very tired. Iam looking forward to mushies & think today I will make some soup. I have been living off pre made stuff. I will have to get used to making a small amount.
Have you bought any of the cookbooks for lap band?
Cheers

Hi Sue
Good to see you are improving. Give it another couple of days and you will be feeling much better. The port site does feel a bit sore for a while, best to hold your hand over when getting up or turning in bed, and the pressure from that will help. It takes probably about 3 weeks or so before you will stop noticing the port site. You will still be able to feel it with your hand, but you will eventually forget it is there and it will not hurt when getting up. I still protect it when my granddaughter is around as she is not very careful where she plonks herself down, she sometimes crawles all over me and then I have to make sure she does not put a knee over the port... LOL... the joys of grandmotherhood :)
I am glad the prune juice worked. Once you go over to mushies you will most likely not need it anymore if you make sure you have plenty of fruits and vegies (mushed up to start with). The dietitian did not want me to continue with the prune juice after starting on mushies, I guess the idea is that once the liquid stage has passed, then ALL drinks from then on have to be zero calorie. |

Hi all, day 5 feeling 1/2 human still a little tired but totally bored, decided to have a few more days off work.
I have tried the Mintec & am not so gassy.
Blended up some stewed apple with custard & milk yesterday (just 3/4 cup), sipped very slowly, went down well. Can still only manage 1/2 Optifast.
Shoulder pain only mild now but still very tired. Bit sore around main wound site, it feels really strange in my tummy sorta like alien!!!!
The prune juice seems to have worked!!
Thanks everyone for the help I feel a bit on my own. Would be totally lost without everyones help. I thought I was all prepared & well read up until I had the surgery. Kinda like having a new baby. Dont know what to do once u get out of hospital
Catch up soon

| Prune juice works wonders, just don't have too much (I used to buy the small bottles and had about 1/3 per day until mushies). |

| Sheltytink, hope you are starting to feel better by now. I had 2 weeks off work, and the first week I definitely could not have worked, and was still on pain killers over night until day 8 (did not take much during the day, but definitely when going to bed). Second week I started to feel much better, and when I went back to work I felt fine, but my boss said to me when I got back that I did not look well (had dark rings around the eyes, even though I was sleeping better the second week). If you can have 2 weeks off, then do that, no good going back if you are not well. Also, in regards to drinking, I had to initially split an optifast into 3, but in the second week I could drink more in one go and by the time I went back to work I could drink a full one. If you cannot drink a lot at the time, this would make you feel tired too as you probably will be a bit dehydrated, so keep sipping water inbetween the more nutritional drinks. You will be feeling better soon. |

Hi sheltytink,
I also had a cough post op and was worried about dislodging something. I rang my surgeon who advised me to get some pholcodeine linctus. It is best to sip it over 15 mins as it works better this way. Also remember to support your tummy when you cough. My cough lasted a week. I am now 20 days post op and all is well. Good luck. |

Sue,
Berrocca is fine if you make it up and then drink it about an hour later. It is quite normal for some people not to want to eat anything and don't worry about how long it's taking you to bounce back, we are all different and you should start feeling much better each day.
Just take your time getting better and you'll find that you may be okay after the weekend, if not then take more time off work, you really don't want to push yourself too soon.

Hi its day 3
I sipped 1/2 an optifast shake and feel quite full. I am very tired, thought I would bounce back better than what I have. I am thinking that I may need more than 1 week off work
With liquid vitamins do u mean Berocca?? I have some but not sure if too bubbly??
I actually dont feel like very much is that normal not to want to eat?
I really appreciate your advice

Immediately post op you wont be able to have much for a few hours, and you must sip slowly!!! perhaps 50mls at a time for a while. (everyones experience is different but this is pretty much what you can have)
anything you have must be thin enough to fit up a straw, and have NO LUMPS. if you need to water things down try doing it with milk which helps with PROTEIN .
liquid vitamins are important (IRON is essential)
immediately post op -
ice chips or water
next day- (after baruim swallow if that is your surgeons thing)
clear broth
apple juice
peppermint tea (good for the wind)
jelly?
day 2 you should be able to start milk drinks -
sustagen, up n go, tea or coffee, milo, etc
soup but still thin
drinking yoghurt
vegie juice
prune or pear juice if you are having issues moving your bowels.
Low fat frozen yoghurt in little 100gram tubs
ww custard with extra milk to be thin enough(yummm)
ww mousse
smoothies
snack pack
ice cream
Put anything you're not sure of through a sieve.
by day 4 or 5 you possibly could drink 250ml in about half an hour to an hour.
by then end of your 2 or 3 weeks of liquid you can start thickening up your things in preparation for mushy stage.
There are some fantastic "liquid" recipes in this thread, just look back through the pages
hope this is helpful! |
