Thanks Jaye, I am still at home for another few days as I ended up going to doc yesterday to get dressings changed. I also ate runny scrambled egg and stewed apple and runny rice custard and found I felt soooo much better for eating that. Maybe not supposed to at this stage. Still have left shoulder tip pain though. You can buy lactose free milk, cream and yoghurt so I am using those products where I can but you can't buy greek style unsweetened lactose free yoghurt unfortunately. I was brought up on Goats milk and can't stand it now, but goat's cheese is fine. The problem is I can have normal diary but only small amounts of full fat milk and cheese (the higher the fat content the lower the lactose). Not helpful for weightloss!

Hi Ness.

Going back to work after a week seems a bit tough. I was given a certificate for two weeks which is up on Tuesday. I still have slight pain but am pretty good now but up until Thursday or Friday I had a sharp pain under my left ribs which I was starting to get worried about until I checked with my doctor and she said it was just more referred pain. I have been very tired and am still struggling with that so I think taking a bit more time off is a good idea for you if you are able to.

Re the snacks, it will be harder for you as all the easiest things are dairy, which I think you said you can't tolerate. What about some of the Nudie juices, or V8 juices or tomato juice or something like that? You can always have a good old reliable soup for lunch. Someone at my work who has had the surgery has been bringing instant porridge for lunch. He thins it down with milk but I guess you could use some kind of pureed fruit like apple sauce or some other runny stewed fruit. Or do you use goat's milk or rice milk or something like that? If you do, I have also been finding that a hot chocolate works well. I make it up with milk instead of water so it has some nutritional value. I use one that is not lactose free but there may be a lactose free version out there. Or you could do it the old fashioned way and just grate up dark chocolate and mix it into whatever milk substitute you use. Lash out and have a marshmallow in it too if you want to.

I have been allowing myself a few luxuries as I am eating so little over all. Some evenings I have just one scoop of some delicious ice cream my sister made for me. I have lost 4 kilos in the 11 days since surgery and I lost 5 on opti so I don't think it's doing too much damage at the moment. No ice cream for you but maybe you could stick a fruit sorbet in the freezer at work and have a scoop at morning tea time. We need to be a bit creative at this stage.

Good luck, Jaye

Hi Jaye and Billie, it sure helps to know that what you are experiencing is similar to others. I have already lost 2kg's in less than a week, but have to say the homemade sang choi bao my family ate tonight made me feel like I was truly missing out! Still have the gas pain and will call doc on Monday - I am supposed to be going back to work but think I need a few more days yet. I am upset though that my previously gorgeous thick lusterous curly strawberry blonde hair has losts it shine and curl and I have a bit of that haunted look. My body must be shocked from the surgery and lack of balanced nutriion. Made chicken and corn soup with egg, pureed of course, from scratch with chicken carcass so hoping that works wonders for me. Support is key though, I'm very fortunate to have a close friend who has done this before me so her advice is great. What are people taking to work for lunches/snacks?

Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
Hi Billiecan.

I was a bit confused about all this too. I think that when they talk about purees at this early stage they are talking about purees of a soupy texture like pumpkin soup etc. So not as thick as people have them in the mushy stage but not watery liquids as some people stick to in the first week.

Personally, I used a cautious trial and error strategy. I started having pureed soups, then adding some yoghurt to them, then pureeing them up with cheese, then moved on to runny scrambled eggs. So each day I made them a little more substantial once I was sure what I could tolerate.

But I agree it's a bit confusing. I was told 2 weeks on liquids and then 2 weeks on purees but when I was in hospital they gave me custard and when I queried it they said it was fine because it was smooth and would go down easily and be "liquid in my mouth".

So I am assuming that when they say purees for the third and fourth week, they are talking about thicker things like mashed potatoes or pureed casserole type dishes etc. I can't promise this is right, but this is the interpretation that I have gone with.

Hope this helps,

Jaye

Make the change when you feel ready. My op was three days before yours and I know I'm not ready for anything too thick. 125mls is about all I can manage at the moment without getting a belly ache and my doctor recommended Opti for two weeks. So long as you are getting adequate nourisment and are not drinking empty calories, it should not be a problem. If your fluids are calorie laden then you need to seriously reconsider the plan. Day 5 for pureed foods sounds odd to me. Let your body tell you what to do. Mack

Hi all

As I reading older threads..I feel a little conflicted..my dietician advised that i start pureed phase today (op was on monday) but it seems like alot of people stay on "straw" phase for 2 weeks. Anyone with any ideas?
cheers

Hey Newbies
Just thought I'd pop in & say hi. I found it always helped when someone did it for me in the early stages.
The c r a p p y days are almost over! You've made the right decision. It gets easier every day and in a few weeks you will be shocked- not just by how good you look but by how good you feel.

Hang in there, support each other and remember this part of the process is about being kind to yourself.

Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
Hi..it is great to read the feedback..I too had a hernia repair and also did not know about..the doctor still charged me for it though!!!
I am feeling so much better today in regards to my mental state...I keep focussing on all the positives..I am much hungrier today and cant wait to have some texture as in puree tomorrow but not sure if I can wait that long. My sister also has been banded and has lost 17kgs since june and she is a great support for me, but i see that it is all different for everyone.
I suppose the best thing is to focus on the moment and not look too far ahead. I dont think we realise the depth of our decision to be banded (well for me anyway.
talk to you all tomorrow

Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
Hi Ness.

I am 9 days post op and have been feeling steadily better every day. I had significant referred pain in my shoulder and collarbone and they settled down by about Day 5. Port site was still sore when I moved and bent over etcetera until about the last 2 days. Now it is sore to touch but doesn't bother me if I don't bother it. I had a sharp pain under my left rib which seemed to get worse over the first week but is now easing every day. I am now able to lift my young son and do all the things I normally would do for him without pain, although I am still not supposed to. I still cannot stand and hold him for long or carry him far.

I'm sure it is different for everyone but I would say that in terms of pain and discomfort the first week was the hardest. On the other hand, I had very little appetite in first week and found it easy to fill up on soups. Now I am much hungrier. Not sure if you're an egg person but a lot of people make egg flips to get their protein or egg drop soups where they stir the egg into the soup carefully to avoid lumps. I haven't tried either of those but I am doing the runny scrambled egg thing that I described in my earlier post today.

I found that I could tolerate heavier/thicker liquids after the first few days. I think a banana smoothie is a bit thick for day 3 or it would have been for me. What I had a few times was orange juice with a few strawberries blended up in it and then put through a sieve. A bit more substantial than just juice but not too thick. Try to build it up gradually maybe.

I had the hernia repair too, and so did a friend of mine who had the surgery a few months ago. I would love to hear from anyone who knows any more about that in terms of, how come it's so common? I didn't even know I had it. Do lots of people have it and don't know, or is it related to obesity? Curious about this so if anyone can shed any light please let me know.

Hope you feel better soon.

Jaye

Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
Hey all, I was banded on 12th October and have made it to day 3 after op. I have found it is an excercise in testing what you can drink. I am lactose AND soy intolerant so that really limits me for my protein intake, I am living on lactose free milk, soups (pumpkin, tomato etc). Hot tea goes down nicely but a banana smoothie does not. Wind pain terrible since op but am taking Gaviscon now which helps. Still worried I am not getting the nutrients needed. My hair is disgusting - all lank and nasty which is so wrong for me. How many days is typical for this first recovery stage? I had hernia repair done same time some my swelling might be more than just with band.

hi..i have just been banded on Monday 12 and am feeling a little sad a sorry for myself as I am still sore (especially around the portal). On day I asked myself "what have I done" but I think once the weight starts coming off I will be happy. I am wanting food but it is more for the smells and textures I think as I am not really hungry. Anyway i am glad there is somewhere where I can express myself.cheers

Hi Linell.
I was banded on the 6th of this month so am around the point that you were at when you wrote this I think. I have experienced some of what you are talking about, feeling like I want to eat even when not hungry, and feeling hungry and wanting something more substantial than liquids.

I think it is hard to be back at work and in your routine and even, if it is in your head, eating is a big part of that routine. It's not surprising you would miss it. It's a bit like the way people don't know what to do with their hands when they give up smoking.

For me, it has been helpful to have more protein. I do this by blending cheese (cottage or light cream cheese) into my soups. Almost any vegetable soup is good with cheese. Also I vary my diet as much as I can and I cook for myself. This is important for me because a lot of the easy ready made things are sweet but I don't normally eat many sweets so I don't want to live on custard and milkshakes and yoghurt.

This morning I had very lightly cooked scrambled eggs (made with milk) with some finely grated tasty cheese mixed in so it melted into them and some salt and pepper and a tiny bit of crushed garlic. I cooked them over a low heat stirring until they had just thickened up a little bit but not set into lumps. They were the consistency of a thin custard. They were delicious and next time I might add some tabasco for a kick and a change.

You can't expect food to suddenly become irrelevant in your life. You still need to enjoy it but in a more controlled way. Anyway, I hope this helps you. I'd hate you to feel you were the only one who was tempted to eat what they shouldn't. In fact, only this morning I was cutting up an apple for my little boy and totally forgot and popped a piece of apple into my mouth. Hopefully, no harm done. I haven't felt any ill effects anyway.

I would love to hear from anyone out there who has any ideas or experiences to share.

Good luck Linell.

Mack,

You will find the amount will increase as you heal. Don't bee too concerned about it just yet. If you surgeon has you on Opti post of then stick with their regime. I just reposted the hints and recipes for those that are unsure of what they can have.

I hope driving today didn't take too much out of you.

Your suggestions sound tempting Pyretta. my doctor has me still on Opti post op but I am only managing one opti and half a cup of vegetable soup a day since last Friday. Fluids go down OK but I have no interest in food at all. I know this was the plan but this lack of interest in food is very unusual for me. I need to start driving today and I am a bit concerned. Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
This is the recipe if anyone is interested, also I'm not good with measurements I usually just throw in what I think but I will try to write measurements.

Ingredients
10 small potatoes (peeled and diced)
1 leek (washed and sliced thinly, white part only)
175g bacon (diced, all fat and rind removed)
1 tbsp butter
1 garlic, crushed or diced finely
1/2 tub of light sour cream
3-4 cups of chicken stock

Method
1. Melt butter in a large saucepan, add garlic and leek and cook well.
2. Add bacon and cook well
3. Add chicken stock and bring to the boil.
5. Add potatoes and let them cook until tender, approx 20 minutes (I let mine cook for longer)
6. Remove from the heat and blend (I did it with a hand blender while it was in the pot)
7. Put sour cream in a bowl and mix it so it becomes a little thiner and add some soup to it and mix it, then add this to the soup and whisk it.

I added a little milk to mine to make it thinner, but my hubby had his thicker.

Enjoy
Mel

Reposting:
Immediately post op you wont be able to have much for a few hours, and you must sip slowly!!! perhaps 50mls at a time for a while. (everyones experience is different but this is pretty much what you can have)
anything you have must be thin enough to fit up a straw, and have NO LUMPS. if you need to water things down try doing it with milk which helps with PROTEIN .
liquid vitamins are important (IRON is essential)
immediately post op -
ice chips or water
next day- (after baruim swallow if that is your surgeons thing)
clear broth
apple juice
peppermint tea (good for the wind)
jelly?
day 2 you should be able to start milk drinks -
sustagen, up n go, tea or coffee, milo, etc
soup but still thin
drinking yoghurt
vegie juice
prune or pear juice if you are having issues moving your bowels.
Low fat frozen yoghurt in little 100gram tubs
ww custard with extra milk to be thin enough(yummm)
ww mousse
smoothies
snack pack
ice cream
Put anything you're not sure of through a sieve.
by day 4 or 5 you possibly could drink 250ml in about half an hour to an hour.

by then end of your 2 or 3 weeks of liquid you can start thickening up your things in preparation for mushy stage.

There are some fantastic "liquid" recipes in this thread, just look back through the pages
hope this is helpful!

I've just discovered that jelly just made is wonderful for easing the wind pain I was having, I've just made it and had about 6 small sips of the liquid and it felt great going down and has taken the pain away for a time, do expect it to work for long but even a few mins is better than nothing.

Mack, you're amazing. People in your line of work are special. The surgery nurse looking after me was so caring and comforting. Felt like I'd known her forever, yet she does that over and over again. I can understand that it is scary for you. Have you been banded already? And going in for some correction? Lap band is my secret too, that's why I love these forums. Chatting with those that are experiencing the same and understanding why we put ourselves thru surgery. I was looking thru my old weight watcher books today - 2006, 2007, 2008. Each time I stopped after about week 12 - each year starting at a heavier weight and loosing less each year. In this short time I am less than I ever got to in those 3 years. My husband and child are the only ones that know. But I'm finding this is same with most bandits.
ANyway, I have everything crossed for you for Friday and will be looking out for your progress. Are you in Sydney??

Hi all,

I'm new here so hope to get acquainted with others!

I was done on Monday the 5th and well, it's been painful and uncomfortable. Drinking has been difficult so I've been sipping on clear fluids but that's been limited due to the discomfort just below the breast bone. I'm hoping it will subside in the next few weeks.

I had a near-vomiting experience after a sip of water last night but managed to hold it down.

Hope everyone else is doing well!
