Polly,

Yes I still belch a few times a day but I can control how loud it is and when it comes up. Initially, they came up of their own free will. Hey...it's better than farting involuntarily..right?? Some people have that, too.

Michelle,

It all sounds very normal. I felt completely out of sorts for at least 2 weeks. In the US, many banders go back to work after a week - I have no idea how they do it?!

You are adjusting to a limited intake of food and calories. You have had a general anasthesia. You are probably struggling to get all your water intake (I still do, 8 weeks post op on Tuesday). I had sea sickness for the first 6-7 days. Everything was moving around all the place (at least that was my perception).

Because I had 4 weeks liquids, I was very concerned with becoming vitamin deficient. I ate homemade beef bone broth, minced veal broth, Ensure shakes, egg flips, etc. You need to look after yourself. And of course, iron elixer and liquid vitamins.

I'm not sure if I've told you anything new, but hang in there!

Thanks Cat. That's actually quite comforting, although I have read other posts from people who never really stopped burping!

if that's the worst of it I suppose i'll be fine.

Cat my surgery was 8 days ago and I am on the liquid phase, and I just feel norsious and drained. Like I am going to vomit but can't, I don't know if this is because of hunger or lack of water, I have no idea. All I know is that I feel awful. What do you suggest?

Poly,

I was also a human belching machine. Yes it will subside in a few weeks. Your stomach and GI is getting used to the big shock it has undergone. The burping returned after I had my first fill and left after a few days. I also get it if certain food upsets my stomach. It is minimal now. I was walking around the house flapping my arms like a chicken. The burps hurt if I didn't let them out (post-op I'm talking about).

hmm - don't think so. not much broccoli or onion yet. being hungry makes me burp too, but i haven't felt hungry at all. doing soups, juice, fluids, jelly etc because i think i have to, not because i'm really wanting it.

i just had some pureed baby food and i may be burping slightly more since eating. but not definitely. it's hard to tell...

are you eating things that would give you gas like soups with broccoli, cauliflower, onion, cabbage? If you're on an eating plan that's anything like mine you're having a lot of dairy, could that be it? For me just being hungry in general can generate excess wind.

at least you can burp. I'm 9 days post-op and have been having trouble getting burps out and have had a distended stomach as a result. Every burp is a joy for me.

Hi guys,

I'm four days post-op and doing very well. Sore muscles around the port when I move about but nothing too serious. Keeping fluids down no problem. Not hungry really. Bored, of course, but trying to be patient with the post-op mending process.

My biggest issue is that I am the amazing burping machine. Seriously, it's just incredible. It's basically constant. In the first couple of days, the burps came with indigestion-like chest pain but now they're pretty much pain-free. Just loud and disgusting. My poor, supportive housemates:)

I've tried Degas and Mylanta but neither seem to have much effect. Tried peppermint tea also, but still burping like a clam. Any suggestions? When will it end??

cheers

Poly

Ta Pyretta. I think I'll stick with the alternate instructions. Strangely, going back to Optifast chocolate shakes doesn't attract me.

Bruce,

I think your instructions meant to read "VLCD meal replacement drink" which includes things like Optifast, Celebrity slim, Tony Ferguson's etc.

Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
Hi Folks,
I had my op at John Fawkner on Tuesday. So far, so good. I dropped 9-10kg on Optifast, so it will be interesting to see how much more I drop before weigh in at the surgeon's rooms on Monday arvo. Some of the literature I was given was a bit ambiguous. Can anyone tell me what a "VLED meal replacement drink" would be? The local pharmacist hadn't heard of that. Fortunately the dietician gave me alternate instructions for the liquid phase that I am sticking with.

Hey Cass,

I am glad you looked at my blog, when did you get banded by Dr. Chan in Traralgon? How long were you on the liquid stage as he was not that forth coming with information? And how much have you lost? Its only been 6 days days since the operation and I have already lost 5 kilos. I was so excited.

Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
I made a point of asking the doctor to give me a packet of panadiene forte' when I was discharged but only took two all up.
After two days I didn't need any pain relief other than a hot pack for the gas related shoulder pain and once a week later when I needed pain relief for it.
From what I observed here, I was very lucky regarding my pain compared to others.
