Pyretta, and anyone else who may be able to help....

Have you seen anyone here who had the lapband but then went on to change it and have the bypass surgery?
I am regretting not having the bypass first now and are thinking of having it done. Any advice?

Mspurr,

The other end should settle in a day or so, as you said there isn't a lot going in. Maybe try some baked beans bleed with tomato juice, to thin it down. It might help, bulk you up a little. Or one of those Acidophalus (Sp?) mixtures to get the good guys fighting in there again.

24 hours home for me and i am finally coping with more than sips of water.
I have had a chicken noodle cupasoup with the noodles strained off , a mouthful of drinking yoghurt and of those hot chocs from jarrah sipped slowly, now my challange seems to be settling the really bad diarrhea , i feel like im outputting more than my input atm, ( keeping up sips of water to help this). Any thoughts on settling the runs..? I was nil by mouth for a week post banding then clear fluids only for 2 days.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions. If i experience nausea again tomorrow, i think i'll speak to my surgeon. The sickness at the moment is the worst part of all of it.

It has really helped knowing there are others that know exactly how i am feeling. Hopefully not too long away, i'll be well seasoned enough to offer helpful advice too.

Thanks again.

Kelly,

It's not uncommon. A lot of the time it's from the anesthetic. We need to try not to though as it does put a strain on the stitches holding the band and port in place.

Thanks Pyretta,

I knew you would come to the rescue. You are such a wealth of knowledge. I think I will move back to using a spoon to slow it down.

Is it common for people to vomit post banding?

Kelly,

You should be fine, Just stick with the clear fluids for a day or so. Sip though a straw if you feel it will slow you down. Some people actually sip off a teaspoon.

If you are feeling nauseated at all go to the doc for a maxalon shot.

Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
Hi everyone,

I got home from hospital today as I had my banding operation yesterday morning. My doctor has said that I can go on the mushies stage straight away. I have been having apple juice, and clear broth and runny porridge at hospital.

When I got home, I had some milk with a dash strawberry topping. I did drink this slowly (or so I though) and now three hours later I have vomited it up.(sorry to be gross) I feel better for being able to get rid of this but I am worried about my band moving.

I will go back on clear liquids for the next two days. Does anyone have experience about their band moving after vomiting? Or know someone else band who has moved post vomit?

I do not have any pain or nausea now. Mr Doctors Surgery is closed so I cannot get into contact with him.

Any suggestions? Kinda freaking out. I am home alone and a little scared.

It sounds like you're having enough in the day not to become too dehydrated as long as you're keeping it all down and don't have any diarrhoea or anything.

I still think you should talk to your surgeon/GP/hospital because you really shouldn't be having persistent nausea.

I had jelly a couple of days after the op and I just made sure I didn't swallow any big chunks and it went down fine.

I was a mess on day 4 - feeling regretful and pretty awful but I'm on mushies now and I feel so much more normal.

I hope you feel better soon (and please ask your surgeon/doctor about the nausea just to be safe).

Lite child,

Yes it is definately worth it. You won't feel too good for a week or two. Take the anti nausea meds, that's what they are for. Just try and keep sipping on fluids throughout the day to keep your fluid levels up.

Try sleeping on your side with a pillow under your stomach to help support it. You may find that a little more comfortable.

Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
Thanks for your reply.

On an average day:

600ml water
200ml Juice
400ml milk/milk based drinks
300ml drinking yoghurt
200ml soup

Today I had one meal replacement milk shake & about 300 mls water. I've got no appetite because i'm scared that more food will make me vomit. It was so painful when the other day i experienced a half a day of not keeping anything down! Ugh!

I do have some anti nausea medication, but i feel like i'm putting so many meds into my body at the moment that i'm trying to avoid it. I should probably go for that though otherwise it will be the hospital on a drip!

I bought a curved pillow this afternoon which really helped me with the back sleep, had a little nap before, much better with the pillow, we'll see how it fares for a whole night though.

Can we have jelly? That would spice up my diet a little!

Trying to remain positive, when i was sick the other day i definitely thought 'what have i done?!'...someone please tell me it will all be worth it :)

Hi lite,

You poor thing. Try as hard as you can to get more fluids into you and maybe talk to your GP or surgeon about some anti nausea medicine. I find that I get nausea when dehydrated so that could be it?

I was banded on the 19th and am still sleeping on my back most of the night. It's driving me a bit nuts too but I found that putting a pillow under my knees when lying flat really helped. I've also had pretty bad pain around my port and the best thing is to keep up the pain medication. By day five I was just on panadol which helped but I still had pain and still do now but it's gotten much better.

If you really don't feel you can get enough fluid down then talk to your surgeon right away because you really don't want to get dehydrated and you already might be. You might need to go back to hospital for a little while so that they can give you some anti-emetic medicine and a saline drip.

How much fluid would you say you're having in a day?

Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
Hi There. I was banded last week (25Feb) and have been experiencing awful nausea and discomfort around the port. I'm also so sick of sleeping on my back! It's driving me crazy...

I really am doing everything 'right' as I perceive it and i'm wondering why i feel so sick? I haven't been wanting to 'eat' anything, even struggling to get water in because of feeling sick.

Has anyone else experienced this? If so, how have you gone about relieving this sickness, is it normal for others? I just want to feel normal again...i thought if i did things right i'd feel okay!

I'm also worried that if i vomit, the band will move/slip or something.

Worried me!

gnb,

Try sucking on some degas tablets. It can help alleviate the wind.

Polly,

it is unwise not to follow your surgeons guidelines. As I said to someone the other day, it's not that we can't eat after surgery, it's that we shouldn't eat, to give the stomach time to heal and time for the band to heal into place. You risk moving the band if you eat solid / semi solid foods too soon.

Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
Hi Meg,

Don't sweat it - you didn't sound grumpy to me!

I'm in my 5th day post-op now and I think thicker fluids/mushy food definitely causes more burping.

Actually - I have a question for all. Yesterday I had the pureed baby food and also this very lovely hoummus recipe someone posted - about half a cup of each at different times. I think technically this is naughty - neither would fit up a regular straw. However ate very slowly, made them super mushy/fluidy in my mouth (sorry, maybe too graphic) and had no problems. I don't have any pain at all when eating this stuff, but I wonder if this is still unwise so soon after the op? I'm feeling really good, but maybe I'm doing damage?

Thoughts?

Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
Poly,

My response to you sounded a bit grumpy, sorry about that! I think I've figured out that when I have liquids that are too thick too quickly I get wind and shoulder tip pain. I can drink a glass of water fairly quickly but not a glass of say V8 vegie juice or something like that (the wind usually sets in about half an hour after I've had the thicker liquid). So perhaps it is the baby food or the thicker things you're having? Or the pace at which you're having them? I definitely feel better today though.

I think I just felt a bit cr@ppy from having a bloated stomach along with a bit of swelling which both made me feel even fatter.

I hope your wind has settled today.

Meg
