Oh man I am so over this liquid stage. I need to put my teeth into something real soon or I am going to go stir crazy. That is my outburst for the day. (6 days more makes it 2 weeks for me) Last night I did leave my soup a little thicker that the day before and added a bit of cayenne pepper and it felt a bit better.
My day consists of:
Cuppa of tea with a little skim milk
An Up and Go
A Barocca with fibre
A Paddle pop for lunch
A yoghurt drink and then
A soup for dinner and fill up on
water, fruit juices and icypoles inbetween.
I had not felt hungry until yesterday so I guess I am healing. I am not too fussed about loosing weight right now I just want to get thru these phases with my sanity in tact and start eating properly again and then I will concentrate on the weight loss. |

Thanks Mack.Cath. I will go to the chemist if nothing happens soon. I did not get anything for nausea just trying to manage it myself.
I will certaintly keep the diet bland and simple from now on. I learnt my lesson the hard way.
Sipping on a Up and GO Banana and Honey and its nice. |

The constipation is a killer so don't let it go on for too long. Visit the chemist and get some suppositories. Drink water, lots of water.
Did your doctor give you something for nausea? I was on medication for the first week to prevent vomiting. Keep the diet simple and bland until things settle down. This is a big operation and your insides need time to heal.
You do need to get to know your body again. This will happen more than once as the fill increases and the weight falls away. Warm wishes for sucess. Mack |

| I survived. Its morning - Day 4. Pain is gone. I did take a Degas pill but I do think it was the soup I ate so that is going to the dogs today. I did not have any pain killers last night and I still woke feeling nausea. I am confused Is it nausea or hungry. I still have not opened my bowels so that might be it as well....oh man this is seriously going to be learning experience. Getting to know your body again. What is my body trying to tell me????? |

I am so uncomfortable right now. I don't know if its wind or constipation or the soup I had for dinner .. maybe I ate too much or too quickly I just don't know what this pain is. I thought the pain from overeating was in the left shoulder but that is not where my pain is. Right now I have pain in my stomach, in my ribcage and in my back and feel really uncomfortable like I am suffering from wind or constipation.. oh man I am sipping on warm water. Hope it helps.
I was banded on Tuesday at 6pm and have been doped up on Panadol and heavy duty pain killers but I did not feel so bad today so I didn't take any. I wanted to see if it was those meds were causing my nausea in the morning but I might not be able to resist if this continues.
I have been good with the liquids stage I think I might need to go back and read if the soup should be bamixed before eating it.
OH man if I survive tonight I am not drinking a damn thing tomorrow :( sigh |

That is such a nice message and I am so glad that you have recovered well. I was banded on 30 October and appreciate the experience of others to answer many of my questions. For the record, life is great and I refuse to not pay attention and follow the rules particularly to these early phases. Thankyou for your support and wise words |

Hi all,
Thought I'd pop in and say 'well done' to all you new bandsters.
I was banded 24.07.2008 and it has been lifechanging and extremely challenging.
But, I read how some of you have 'slipped' a little with your fluids post op.
1. Don't beat yourself up you are only human! If we could control what went into our mouths, we wouldn't have needed the band in the first place.
2. Do try to stick with the fluid stage. It is so important to let the stitches develop scar tissue covering, and hold it firmly in place.
3. Don't let yourself get constipated. The more you push, and put pressure through your abdo, the more trouble you can cause at an early stage in banding.
I was re-banded on 01.11.2009 due to band slippage. I've had 2 major blockages, this last one sending me to hospital for a new band. It is no horror story, but I was a little blazee about the whole journey until this happened.
Signs of a slippage, you can't miss! Pain, pain, and more pain. Not tolerating even the slightest sip of fluid. No hunger. Cannot sit still. Not your usual 'under ribcage' pain post surgery. Vomiting from trying to swallow your own saliva. Pain through to the back and on my whole left side chest. Certainly not a 'normal' feeling.
I am now 8 days out from my new band, and I feel great, and following the rules to a T this time. I am now learning to live with the band, like I wouldn't allow myself to the first time.
Do I regret any of it? Hell No. Life is just beginning.
I wish each of you a happy journey with your band.
Selena

Hi Rebecca... it may well be that you are eating it too quickly. Even liquids can cause us grief sometimes.
Remember that you are still very swollen and sore on the inside, and that maybe just a eat off a teaspoon for a few days until it settles. Some people are more prone to swelling after any sort of surgery, maybe you are one of these.
Suck on some ice cold things... an icy pole, paddle pop or the like... sip some cold water with ice in it very slowly to see if the cold helps relieve the swelling.

Hi there,
This is day 3 post-0p for me. I have suffered with bad Esophagus pain, and sucking quick-eze, which has helped a lot with the heartburn feeling, I read they put the camera down the Esophagus, so that probably does'nt help. Pain in tummy is easing, still not feeling very hungy, trying to just take the whole liquid stage slowly, and repair all round the wound. Anyone else have bad heartburn? Janine |

Hi All I got banded yesterday 130pm, I woke from anaethestic with a very sore left shoulder but a heat pack helped this a lot!
I had cups of ice and water and slept quite well overnight.
Today before being discharged the nurse said I should try soluable panadol for pain but I didnt realy feel that sore but she kind of insisted which turned out to be a mistake I vommitted alost immediately (I know think it was cause it was fizzy) because I was able o knock down a glass of water and two of those apple juice cups before coming home.
I was very pleased to be able to burp I read somewhere or was told that you cant burp after the band and who doesnt enjoy a good burp.
I am not really sure what I can drink but havent been hungry anyway so it hasnt been a huge problem.
I had 3 tablespoons of berries with crushed ice and apple juice half a cup of soup and some cordial today.
I think I will love the mashed potatoe stage !
I slept a fair bit today and wasnt overly saw but later in the day I beun to feel sore around the op sites.
Does anyone know when the soreness goes?
Anywho the jury is out on whether this was the right thing we will see,
Bye for now |

Yippeee, I have started mushies and am very excited..so over pureed.
Saw my surgeon yesterday and everything is going great guns. I lost 3.6kgs which is really fabo. I would love to lose 10kgs for xmas but any loss is a good loss.
I am now getting quite hungry or more like peckish at times but try to not think about it or I just dip my finger into some yoghurt that seems to help.
It has been a good week!!
Laters everyone

| Hi, Fairy steps here I was banded on monday 19/10/09 so I am on day 5. I was told if it fits through a staw I can have it,but not to use a straw as the sucking motion also gets air and that gives you wind pains, I am on sustagen 3X a day[for 2 weeks] and any thing else I like up to 2 litres a day as this is the healing stage not the weight loss stage that comes in 2 weeks mind you I watch what I drink , a small capacino at the end of the day if I have been good.I also take supradyn daily for my vitamins just let the bubbles die down 1st, my biggest problem is making myself drink slowly but I know about it if I drink to much in one go. Catgh you all later |

Hi everyone
I went back to work this week a week after my op. I am so glad as I was sooooo bored!!!.
Anyway there is so much I want to ask,say advise but will let you know that I have no "wing tip" pain only occassional pain where the port is and really it is more discomfort then anything.By my scales I have lost around 3kgs which is encouraging.
Now for the eating part...I am now starting to feel more hungry but am determined to stick to my puree but I am probably bordering on mushie as somethings dont dribble off the spoon like it should but I have had no real issues with burping, discomfort or anything.
I am also very paranoid about slippage. So my question is
How do you know if your band has slipped?
Mental state good!! |

Yostuyu, I completely understand. I also broke down and ate something only a few days out. It was not much, but I too have been beating myself up about it. We both know it is risky and stupid, so I won't lecture you.
I plan on telling my surgeon when I see him, humiliating as that will be. (He's a great surgeon, but not very compassionate!)If you talk with your doctor, they can do the tests that will put your mind at ease.
For me, the slip was all about comfort eating--I have not been really hungry. My battle is going to be in my mind, I know that. But it can be won! I am back on track...a bit humbler, a bit more careful and a bit more reasonable about what I will need to do to make this work for me. Cheating the band is cheating myself.
Being hungry in the beginning, I gather, does not mean that your band has slipped. It can depend on how much fill is in there at the time of surgery and maybe other things.
Perhaps someone with more experience can give more info.
Does anyone have first hand experience of very early band slippage due to not sticking to the liquid/mushie stages?
Thanks. |

I think we are all a little paranoid for the first few weeks but you should fess up to your doc. I'm impressed you felt hungry on Day 3 and could eat at all! I was only just out of hospital on day 3 and had to force myself to drink anything until day 7 where I started to feel hungry.
Thanks for the advice on Goat's yoghurt... I live in red neck ville where it has taken them years to even stock chorizo sausage yet alone fancy yoghurt! Next time I am at the "big" shops I'll have a look.
All I have had today is chocolate milk for breakfast, some water, juice and chicken soup for lunch. Just made myself a strawberry milkshake (real strawberries) after making the bed, very painful to make bed - should have waited for partner to help. Now a rest I think! |

I had my op on the 12th. And on day 4.... i cheated. I feel so stupid and silly and risky but i ate two spring roll. not big spring roll, mini spring roll but they were spring roll nonetheless. I did chewed them to death because i was so missing the flavor and the chewing of food...
i did not have any problems with it afterwards, everything seemed fine except for the shoulder pain but that's been there since Day 1. Now at Day 7 it's not there anymore so i'm ok.
I do find that i am eating less and lost about 3-4 kgs in the last few days but that's probably water which i will get back next mushy phase.
I stick to the diet now but i am paranoid about the spring rolls. its haunting me!
I can sleep on my side or on my back quite comfortably since day 3, no issue at all with stomach. Constipation seemed to have cleared too.
But i'm still paranoidly scared of doing bad damage to my band because of the spring roll. For example, i feel hungry every 2-3 hours, so i have about 1 or 2 gulp of unsweetened apple juice and stick to 3 small meals a day (as per instruction)...
If i'm hungry every 2-3 hours, does this mean my band slipped? I really hope not. Curse those spring rolls, but they were sooooo goood =( |

Hi Kelly.
Re the constipation, the advice I had was to try and keep things moving because it can become a real problem if you let it go on too long. Having said that, mine came right on it's own once I started having some thicker vegetable soups which I did after the first week.
Some people suggest using metamucil but my doctor told me to use Lactulose which is a liquid syrup that tastes incredibly sweet. I didn't need it this time but have used it in the past when I was pregnant. You can dilute it with water but I found this made it worse and I used to just drink it straight down as fast as I could and then drink water afterwards to wash it down. Of course, some people would probably like it but I am not a sweet tooth.
Re the rib pain, I have still got it slightly and I am 2 weeks post op tomorrow. Early on I was very worried about it because I have a genetic condition which makes me prone to blood clots and I thought it might be a clot. I wish that they gave you a big list of all these bits of info before the surgery but they don't so we all worry until we find out that others are in the same boat.
Good luck with your recovery,
Jaye |

Hi Ness.
There is some pretty nice natural sheep's milk yoghurt called Meredith Dairy that I used to use a lot when I was not having dairy. I found I needed to go to a decent health food shop to get it but it was worth it.
I'm not sure about the fat content, but would imagine less than cow's but could be wrong. However, I only eat full fat yoghurt because it tastes so much better than low fat and for the amount of it I eat, I don't think it's a concern. Generally, I think people overestimate the fat content of milk, yoghurt etc. Of course with cream, cheese and butter you need to be very careful but milk and yoghurt are only about 4% fat and I can live with that if it tastes a lot better. Some of the Greek yoghurts do have cream added to them though so you have to watch out for that!
I am officially two weeks post op tomorrow and moving onto to the mushy stuff. Actually I cheated and started at lunchtime today because I had my follow up appointment at the hospital today and got the all clear so I thought I could bring it forward 12 hours or so.
I had pasta tonight but was cautious and used risoni for the first time. I had a tomato based sauce and meatballs (well I only had one). The meatballs were cooked in the sauce so very soft and I chopped it up with my fork and chewed it very well. I also had a fair bit of sauce on the pasta to help things along.
We had dinner at about 6.30 and I still feel very very full. I tried to limit the amount to less than a cup, in fact aimed for 1/2 cup but didn't measure it and may need to do so next time as I feel like I overate. It is nice to feel like you can eat something resembling real food though.
Glad you got some extra time off work. I went in today for the first time and I was fine but I must admit I am exhausted now so I'm glad I didn't go back any sooner.
