Purple,

The only thing for shoulder pain is time, though heat packs on the area and short strolls to shift the gas also help.

Just checked, actually the original was
Cauliflower and Blue Cheese Soup
it's gone to, camembert, brie etc so shows how versatile any cheese can be in a soup.

Cauliflower and Blue Cheese Soup
Submitted by Ghyll.

So for the cauliflower and blue cheese soup - it goes something like this.
Cut the florets off the head of a cauliflower or in extreme cases of laziness 1packet of frozen cauly.
Make up a veggie stock (Campbell small box veggie stock is such a nice easy help!)

Cook up the cauly well - to mush stage.
Cool down then liquidise.
Don't add any seasoning because the cheese at times can be quite salty!

Return mixture to the pot and crumble in cheese - now here is the difficult part because I go by taste - usually use half the cheese then taste, and if it is bland then add more and a little black pepper.

I tend to make it thick and then water it down with more stock instead of having it thin from the beginning. You see how I work like the band!! Start off thick and then get to thinner!!!

Sorry that it is so vague but as I said my cooking comes from inside me.

The zucchini soups either with yogurt or blue cheese I do the same way. I have learnt that zucchini when liquidised goes very watery - I tend to just cover them with water in the cooking phase and when I liquidise drain them and then add the water slowly - nothing worse than soup you can see through!!

Pyretta

Came from Ghyll originally on Ozband many years ago, Cauliflower and Camembert, not that I'm a "nit picker" as Julie calls me, just trying to help you.

I've also thrown the camembert or plain old tasty cheese into other soups like Tomato soup, chicken soup and is equally as nice.

The recipe for the Cauliflower and Brie soup came from Therese originally I think. I'll just past it below here:

It can be made with Camembert as well.

Cut a cauliflower into florets and cook in 1 litre of chicken or veggie stock until soft. Zap with hand blender and cut up a small wheel of brie or Camembert cheese and stir through until melted. Serve with sweet chilli if desired.

It is yummy.

Craving ans many savoury flavours as I can get has caused me to do a bit of experimenting. I know I have posted this elsewhere but I have brought some of those meals in tins, like braised steak and vegies, Irish stew and shepherds pie.

My dietitian also told me she wanted me to incorporate baked beans wherever possible for fiber so I have been using a stick blender and blending up one can of the prepared meals with one can of baked beans. I then freeze 4X200ml containers like that for the mushies stage and then blend what is left with beef stock until it is a soup consistency.

I usually end up with at least another 4X200ml of soup depending on how much stock I put in. Then Zap each in the microwave, 1.5min for defrosted or 2X2 min if frozen.

You can add a little cheese or any herbs or spices to give it just a little flavour lift as well.

Hi there Everyone

The recipe for Creamed Corn, Chicken and Bacon soup is as follows:

Fry bacon (three rashers)drain it on paper towel if very fatty after frying.

Fry diced onions and diced (one) chicken breast.

Add these ingrediants to a saucepan, then add one can of cream of chicken or cream of chicken and corn soup, one can of creamed corn and about six cans of water, chicken stock cube, two tablespoons of Vegetta (gourmet stock powder available from woolies) bring to boil.

In another bowl, beat two eggs with a dash of milk and then slowly add this to the boiling soup, mixing with a fork under the egg flow (doing this creates egg noodles) once the egg has formed noodles and soup thickens, remove from heat, add salt and pepper to taste and enjoy!

From the recipe thread:
Creamy Broccolli Soup

1-2 large onions, diced
2 or 3 large heads brocolli, stalks & all! (not leaves) chopped up
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
5 or 6 Ch. stock cubes, I use the Massell brand 'Chicken Style' as it's ok for vegetarians & gluten free
1/2 to 1 heaped tsp minced chilli- 1/2 & you won't know it's in there..it needs it... or full tsp and can sense slightly its in it ~ depends on taste.. I use 2 tsps ~ still only mild
1 tin Carnation light n creamy evap.milk
tiny amount of olive oil or spray

In large soup pot, put oil/spray heat a little & add diced onion till just starting to go see thru.. but half way add garlic & chilli
throw in broccolli then add enough water to cover 1-2 inches over ingredients & simmer till b.stalks are cooked thru.
blend with stab mixer in pot & add evap. milk after add fresh herbs of choice if desired & a pinch or 2 of curry powder for added taste if u want?..
..if not thick enough can add a couple of chopped potatos or cauliflower when adding brocolli.
Or can add 1 tbsp cornflour (pre mixed with a bit of water) & stir thru soup. Also, can add another can of evap. milk too, depending on quantity made and personal taste

Potato leek and bacon soup- this was really awesome!
about 6 large spuds,
1 leek
1 brown onion
celery i think..
6 rashers of bacon
garlic
bacon or vegie stock cubes
cream for serving.

chop spuds, leek and celery, cover with water and cook in microwave about 15 mins
while you are doing that fry onion, garlic and bacon together,
when the vegies are finished add the onion, garlic and bacon to it and some bacon stock, cook for another 10 mins in the microwave,

Immediately post op you wont be able to have much for a few hours, and you must sip slowly!!! perhaps 50mls at a time for a while. (everyones experience is different but this is pretty much what you can have)
anything you have must be thin enough to fit up a straw, and have NO LUMPS. if you need to water things down try doing it with milk which helps with PROTEIN .
liquid vitamins are important (IRON is essential)
immediately post op -
ice chips or water
next day- (after baruim swallow if that is your surgeons thing)
clear broth
apple juice
peppermint tea (good for the wind)
jelly?
day 2 you should be able to start milk drinks -
sustagen, up n go, tea or coffee, milo, etc
soup but still thin
drinking yoghurt
vegie juice
prune or pear juice if you are having issues moving your bowels.
Low fat frozen yoghurt in little 100gram tubs
ww custard with extra milk to be thin enough(yummm)
ww mousse
smoothies
snack pack
ice cream
Put anything you're not sure of through a sieve.
by day 4 or 5 you possibly could drink 250ml in about half an hour to an hour.

by then end of your 2 or 3 weeks of liquid you can start thickening up your things in preparation for mushy stage.

There are some fantastic "liquid" recipes in this thread, just look back through the pages
hope this is helpful!

Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
what got me through the last few days of liquid phase were my yummy shakes 150-250 mls soy milk (choc flavour)1/2 -1 ripe bananna 2-3 scoops of natures way choc flavoured protein powder and give it a good wizzzzzz.... it makes a nice thick tasty shake that you can sip throughout the day and this alone gives you 40 gms of protein a day! Its darn delish too... (make sure you read the nutrition advice on the soy milk pack because some of the flavoured ones vary so much in kj etc - just reduce the amount to suit)

I know bannans aren't the best choice but when I was sooo hungry and was having a rather excessive result from benefibre ;) it was a pretty decent option.

Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
it isnt so much its going to affect you going to mushies or make you feel off or anything....more the fact of the healing time needed for your tummy and new pouch iykwim

the liquids soups etc are to give time to heal....so there isnt any heavy food in our pouches therefore advoiding any problems with the healing etc

it can be a difficult time some of us had to do the soups thing for 4 weeks....groan...i remember it well

do be guided by your surgeons and try hard to follow their advice its only for a short time

make the soups more nourishing....tasty etc

but if your going to go onto the mushies then do keep them thin and runny for a while

I am not trying to pick any fault here.....and mean it kindly...we all go through this and yes it can be a very boring time and we so want to eat rofl

good luck and just take it slow

just like to recommend a delicious store-bought soup I had tonight. Its by Velish and its butternut pumpkin, sweet chilli and sour cream! mmmmmmmmm soooooo gooooood

Although I passed it through a sieve I didn't really need to - most of the soup went thru anyway.

Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
Hey guys,

I'm about 8 months down the track, and I've lost 20kg (I'm a tall girl at 174cm so I only need to get down to about 75kg - five more to go!

Anyway, I have a whole bunch of Optifast that I don't need anymore, and I'm happy to sell it for a cheapy price...

I have about 20 vanilla and 15 choc shakes which have a used-by date of Aug 09. I also have three bars (three diff flavours), mixed vegie soup X 3, chicken soup X 4 and 6 strawberry shake which are all used by Feb-March 09 (although I think they'll be fine, it's all sealed up and it's just powder...)

I'm happy to the lot for $80 incl. postage, which I think is a steal 'cause the shake boxes along are about $45 a pop. I am located in Newcastle, so if there's any locals I'm happy to bring it to them, but otherwise I'll post. Payment would be direct debit into my account.

Please e-mail me at monique.hughes@gmail.com if you want them, and good luck! Trust me, it's worth it in the long run.

re georges - I would challenge the chef to call the police cos I refuse to pay for off food - making a scene would be great for business ;) Dont let bullies make you pay for off or bad food. I just think too many people think they can get away with damaging our insides. That chef sounds like a complete jyerk.

Re:liquid phase- post op (the straw diet ... Reply to this message
I'm now in this stage and as I can not have optifast (lactose intolerant) I wanted to pass on my dieticians advice for others who feel they need some help.

She told me 40 grams of protein per day is for normal eaters which I am not at so 20 is what I should aim for 30 is great. She reminded me that the aim of the game in this stage is 'nourishment' for healing and building strength. Not to worry about consistency building - keep it thin if its comfortable as the mushie stage is where I should worry about that.

* Protein shots:
100 ml shots of soy milk of my choice
up to 3 tblspns of protein powder flavoured if wanted
Making sure its not too thick (just have more shots)

*Fibre plan
(its important to get the bowels functioning in this stage after any inactivity and prior to mushie stage + makes sure I get the benefits of protein)
In 3 water bottles (400 mls each) add one tspn of benefibre each bottle shake well. She told me it was important if my bowels had been inactive to first take 1/2 dose of a laxative once to get started (nothing super strength!) and then the fibre

She also prescribed puree fruit watered down with juice just for variety if I feel 'hungry' because a few people have said it feels like food :)

ADDING: its important if you are having any probs to speak to your own dietician because they are familiar with your body, surgery and health situation. This advice was given to me for my situation. (Hernia, one of those sore people :))
