Chicky,
Yes you can after about day 3, before that you might be on clear fluids, it will depend on your surgeon. If you feel they are too thick at the time you can thin it down with more water.
Best of luck for tomorrow.

Kym,
Chicken and chips are both pretty notorious for being hard to keep down. why can't you eat mince? Seriously it is one of the easiest meats to keep down, or fish in a moist sauce.
You are probably swollen from your vomiting yesterday so stick with just liquids or thin mushies for a day or two and then gradually ease back into solids.
You might also want to look at the first bite syndrome thread too.http://au.messages.ya hoo.com/lifestyle/lap-ban d/254353?

Hi guys I am back.
I have changed from Dr Dolan to Dr Couch and are much much happier!
He put in 3mls last week as I actually managed to put on 5kg with the 1ml fill. I am having problems with tolerating food now though. I am getting pain on the first mouthful of every meal and anre not sure if it is the norm?????
Yesterday I got some not chewed chicken blocked in a shopping centre and vomited and was in pain+++ for an hour. I then vomited on a fried chip we had for tea and are now miserable.
Should the first bite of meals be painful? I also don't know I am full until it is painful. Is that right as well?
The dietician was too busy to see me so i won't see her until i return in 2 weeks. I am not allowed to eat read meat, sausages, chicken or bread unless the chicken is in a casserole and falls apart. What am I meant to do?
I am so depressed, don't know what to eat and are sick of the pain which is probably bad discomfort. |

| Hi Danny, l had my pre op appointment today and asked my surgeon about the shoulder pain l have heard of after surgery, he said the pain comes from your diphragm which tells your brain you have pain in your shoulder. Can't remember if it's due to being moved in op or what. didn't think to ask how it can be relieved but hope things improve for you soon. bbb |

Hi Danny , a heatpack on my neck and left shoulder helped heaps for me. Along with the suggestions Pyretta listed i saw a couple of people post success with placing the heatpack in the middle of their chest, about breast level. Congrats on your new life as a bandee

Danny,
Peppermint tea, degas tablets and gentle strolling. A hot water bottle on the back of the shoulder can also help.

Hi guys, just got home from hospital yesterday (Sat 9 May 09) after being banded by Dr Dolan. I am having bad shoulder tip pain from the gas used to inflate the abdomen. If anyone has any suggestions to help me at this stage I would be very grateful.

metamucil and other fiber products like fybogel is one product not recommended to banders. It is because it sets firm just above the band and can lead to blockage or stretching the band itself. Benefibre is OK as it does not set and is very fine bulking agent.
When one is on fluids remember there isn't the volume or mass going down the bowel so it maybe several days before you can have a bowel action. As long as you do not feel uncomfortable just keep the fluids up should be enough with perhaps only adding pear/prune juice. Barb |

Bel,
Unfortunately yes, some people ave the shoulder tip pain for a month or more. Just keep up with the painkillers and heatpack and keep moving, it's all you can do really.

You can get metamucil in the supermarket, if she really is in pain I would take her to the gp, you don't want her getting dehydrated or suffering from a bowel obstruction. You can get microlax from the pharmacy which goes "in the other end", you hold in it for 15 mins and the kaboom! Not very pleasant but clears the bowels.
Another idea, which would probably be best is to ring health direct, 1800022222. They are trained nurses and will run though what she has taken so far and do an assessment on the phone.
Best of luck, I hope she has some relief soon.

Thanks jen, my wife is 10 days post opp and has been taking awalax in the brown bottle. she has taken quite alot of it and drinking heaps of water. she seems very unhappy at the moment. I am really worried about her. I will try and get some pear juice and prune juice.

The best thing I know of to "get things moving" is Actilax, it's in a big brown bottle and is only available from the dispensary in the chemist and you don't need a prescription.
Alot of the Tony Ferguson's and Optifast can bind you up so you need to try and get as much water in as you can, so sip sip sip.
Prune Juice or Pear is also a good way to treat it daily if it's an ongoing problem, best of luck.

Hi mandy,
I totally agree, the shoulder pain is far less intense when i am laying down! i will be so happy when i participate in life again! it is so hard to keep your spirits up when u have to rely on so many people for things, so i can heal- grrr very frustrated :( |

Hey purple docs, had the same problem myself with the shoulder pain, had my op on the 23/4, for me, the best way to relieve the pain was to actually lay pretty flat. I found the more i stood and sat properly the more pain i was in. I am now 9 days post op and the majority of the pain has gone, i only get a few twinges here and there now.
