k,
Try chewing on a bit of parsley. you are probably in ketosis so increasing your carbs may also help.

Im looking for solutions for the stinky breath post op on liquids
is there some foods (soups) etc that fix or help to lessen the effect?
I havent eaten(drunk) much the last few days, but i'm going to up my intake today and also get in some more water.
brushing, flossing and mouthwash is helping a little bit, but i'm going to be pretty self concious if this stays like this.
anybody else found some good remedies?
please and thank you

Rosa my dietican explained prior to surgery that the reason for the stages is to let your band site heal. He said it takes around 28 days for your stitches inside and the area around it to "set". Prior to that it is very delicate and can tear easily.
The liquid stage is also because of the swelling at the band site and having anything that may cause vomiting can move the band.

I phoned my dietician this morning and was told that to keep my diet to yoghurt, custards and pureed soups. I have been overdoing it food wise and i could kick myself for it as it is important to stick to the rules.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

hi jan, I am on day seven and I am trying different foods. i know that I should totally be on liquids but i need the variety. I obviously have not had my first fill but I do feel full after a smaller amount of food/drink. i have to see the dietician next saturday to see about 'mushies' etc. It will be good to talk about where i am at. I too am looking foreward to my first fill.

Hey Rosa .. my dietician has me on a minced and moist diet which includes rissoles, sausages, patties, mince meals, stewed fruit. I feel very guilty downing even the little bit of sausage that I can ... isn't exactly what I would have considered diet food! I'm finding I can eat much larger quantities as each day goes by and can't wait until I see the surgeon on Monday for my first fill ... although I'm a not so fat chicken when it comes to needles so feeling a bit apprehensive.
The dietician told me I can go back on to normal food next Thursday .. feels like I have got to this point very quickly but can't wait to do some experimenting with different foods and textures. I'm finding every day with the band is a learning curve and can't wait to move forward.

| Well Rosa having one soy flat white each day will be one of the few ways I can get the necessary protein, as well as soy custard, protein powder added to sorbets, soy chocolate milk and soy yoghurts. Please don't tell me I cannot have one pleasurable coffee. Barb |

Hey Jan,
I am 11 days post op and only just getting my hunger back. Looking at everyone eating like I'm a vampire or something! So, hopefully that means I too am on the mend. Are you on mushies or "normal" food? |

Rosa .. I was banded Tuesday last week and didn't feel hungry until about Day 7 post op when I just couldn't seem to relieve my hunger with liquids. Luckily I saw the dietician yesterday on Day 9 and she has allowed me a much more varied diet. I am due for my first fill on Monday .. can't wait because I feel like I'm back to eating a much larger amount. Enjoyed my dinner last night .. but still feeling a bit apprehensive about trying new foods that may or may not go down. Hang in there with the fluids and you will be upgrading to yummier food before you know it.

Thanks Pyretta and Carolyn...
I did have an ultrasound of the liver prior to op, but it was all fine, perhaps thats why i didn't have the pre - op phase....
It sounds tough...so its truly amazing that most of us Banders go through this part succesfully... |

Chicky,
The pre op Optifast is to help reduce the fat around your liver before the surgery, it was explained to me that it softens the liver so that it folds in surgery as they go through the abdomen to get the band in place.

Chicky,
The purpose of doing Optifast pre op is to remove fat from around the liver to make lifting it out of the way for the operation a bit easier. Some people also feel it makes recovering from the op easier as well.

rosa,
Your hunger may return as the swelling goes down. Hopefully that will happen at the same time you move to mushies and eating will negate the hunger, however for some of us the hunger returned in the first week or two.

crystal, all that food sounds so good.yum yum.
can i just ask, i had surgery on Monday just passed. At the moment my appetite is not high. Is that because of the swelling from surgery. So as the swelling goes down my appetite increases and this is before I have a fill in about a months time? |

Hey Rosa,
I was provided with a folder which had a recommended list of things to have when on the liquid diet, and coffee is on the list along with diet swiss hot chocolates, (i use Jarah 99% fat free). It also recommends diet cordials, fruit juice without pulps, thin soups and meal replacements (Opti...but i've been told by my Dr its fine if i use Tony Ferguson cause i like the variety and taste of the shakes better.)
Provided you can sip it through a thin straw, it should be fine, however avoid anything with high sugar contents : ) Hope that helps. |
