Hi
I only had the infection for 2 days before it was taken out and i am sure it was because it would not have healed with the port in.
It is the sort of wound that heals from the inside out..
I have lost 12kg which the doctor is very happy with i have a fill of 5.5

Hi again Judy,
Just 2 weeks after placement?
Did they not try antibiotics first to try and save it?
My physician said they usually give it at least 2-3 months before removal.
I would therefore assume yours must have been very bad.
I can't believe it's taken 2 months to heal.
I would assume you have no fill.
How has this affected your weight loss or weight gain? |

Thank you Judy,
how long after your surgery did you have it removed?
Did you also have this clear brown fluid coming out?
The doctor told me they usually wait 2-3 months of antibiotics before they remove.
Why did they take yours out so soon? |

Hi all,
I was banded 15th October, doing ok till this last monday(12 days post op) when i decided to call my surgeon because my port incision looked red, sore and was soft to touch.
My surgeon's receptionist told me to come in and see one of the physicians. He took a look and had a feel and decided to aspirate some of the fluid he could feel under the skin. So in goes this thick horse needle and instead of the 1ml of fluid he was expecting, out come syringe, after syringe, a total of 15mls.(It was plasma with broken down red blood cells, not pus)
He prescribed some antibiotics and handed me a wad of absobent gauze & tape and said it would keep weeping plasma for a few days.
Well it is now saturday(17days post op) and i can tell you that everyday it's like a river. He told me to gently squeeze out the fluid as it pools. Some days it's like a fountain. Doesn't appear to be infected, just this weird clear brown fluid.
What is this? Has anyone had anything like this happen? Is it possible my body is rejecting the port? The physician said it would be 2-3 months before a decision is made to remove the port.
Can anyone shed any light on what's going on here?
Any response would be appreciated. |

Thanks for that info, that really helps :)
I bet it was a shock for you too to have to have the port removed. I mean, we know what some of the risks are but we never expect that we will be the unlucky ones with the problems. Which state are you in if you dont mind me asking?

Hi
No problem ask away..
yes i had a fill to 5.5 i had 4.5 when i left hosp first time
I did not have to pay to have the port removed, i think they just charged the reccommended fee as my private health ins paid it all i just had to pay $150 for the 3 nights in hosp.
The infection was cleared up after 3 days i think the pain went as soon as i was injected the antibi and the port removed. They were packing the hole for 2 days with betadine soaked gauze and when i left hosp. i had to just flush each morning with an antibacterial wash and cover with gauze...once a day.......it was just tender for a while not painful.......not sure where it will go back.
it took me a few days tp get some streength back and i pretty much sayed in bed for 3 - 4 days just up for eating, toilet etc and then just lay down..
Hope it helps

To Judy
Thanks for replying to my question. I have a few more questions for you. Did you have a fill before they took out the port. Did you have to pay for the surgery to have the port removed? How long did it take to have the infection completely gone after the port was taken out? Did you have pain in the port area and if so, is it still painful?
Is the surgeon going to put the port back in the original position?
Sorry for all the questions but I am very worried. |

Hi all
Yes a swab was done of the infected site.
I also have some pain around the area which hurts when I bend over. My doc also told me that the wound has to heal from the inside out, so it is sort of hard to tell if it is improving. I am praying for a miracle with this because I don't want any setbacks in my weightloss journey.
It is very worrying, but as the doc said "Think positive"

Hi
I had an infected port and had to have it removed 2weeks after banding in august 08 i have a slight restriction but will have the port put back in jan or later. It has almost healed now and there have been no further problems. I was left with a hole that had to heal from the inside and it was done 1.09.08 and has stopped weeping 2 weeks ago and has still not colsed although it has a hard scab like top on it now.
Regards

Hi, I have just read about your port infection. I also had one, but no where near as bad as yours.
More importantly, have you had a swab taken of the wound? then you will be sure you are on the right antibiotic.the last thing you need is a raging infection. |

Sassy,
Port infections are quite common. I had a few wound infections but was very fortunate not to your extent.
The doctors are aware that this happens and it is though no fault of your own or anyone else's. it just may be that you are more prone to bacterial infections than someone else.
Keep taking the antibiotics and follow your surgeons advice and guidelines and it should be healed quite soon. Even if they need to take the port out they can replace it after the infection has healed, it may mean, however that your weight loss journey is off to a bit of a slower start, but you will get there in time.

Hi
Thanks for bringing this topic to the front for me :)
I was 16 days post op when I noticed that one end of my larger incision (port) was weeping. The doc put me straight into hospital for 4 days on heavy duty antibiotics. I am home now and still on antibiotics but the wound still has not closed up. I am on oral antibiotics now for another 4 days and I see the doc again on Monday.
If the wound has not improved by next Monday I am looking at having the port removed :(
I was very careful with my bandages and incisions when they came off and am very worried about this. Is there anyone else out there who has been through something similiar.

Hi Belinda...
I would make sure that your surgeon sees the area that you are talking about. I would keep it covered and dry. I also think you probably need a dose of antibiotics to ensure that it doesn't get infected. It does sound like it is just taking a bit of time to heal, but I would make sure that it is looked at by the surgeon. You can never be too careful after surgery, you don't want to get a bug in the wound.

Thanks for the feedback, I have been seeing my gp & hchanging the dressing on the area.
I also have been putting betadine on it also.
Just when i think it is beginning to heal it comes open again, obviously the skin is thin there while its trying to repair itself but each time just starts to heal & then breaks opn again.
My big cut (4-5cm)one healed nicely as did the smaller ones, just this one giving a little greif. Pain wise is ok just a little pinkish colour around the port.
Thanks for your help.

Belinda,
Having had a few problems with ports i urge youto see the doctor and get on the antibiotics and ensure a good routine of dressing changing and wound management.
See the surgeon ASAP. Also you need to ensure you are eating well and getting nutirents, perhaps the surgeon can suggest a protein drink, or even just sustegen, it does help.
Cheers Phillipa |

Belindah,
Is the site actually infected? Are you on anti biotics of any kind, what dressings are you using on it? Are you using a multi vitamin? All of these questions will determine how long it will take to heal.
Infections in the large cut are a serious matter. I had an infection in one of my small wounds and was able to clear it up in 3 or so days. Is your surgeon aware of the infection? I do know that infections are commonly caused by the dressings put on at surgery. Hopefully yours have been removed by now and you are having the new dressings changed every day as well as betadine or another antibacterial being applied to the wound.
If you are at all concerned about it please contact your surgeon or GP ASAP.

Hi,
Operated on 30/10, All healing nicely, except the site where the port thingy is.
Would appreciate any other info on how long this area took to heal up on others who have had the lap banding?
Thx
