Re:Dr Lillian Kow Reply to this message
Hi,
My name is Courtney and i am getting banded by lillian on the 19th august so not long now. I am 21 and am getting very nervous now. I am getting banded at flinders private. I was wondering if anyone had to pay any out of pocket expenses in regards to the operation. I have private heath and was told i did not have to pay anything extra and was wondering if this was the case.
I can't wait to get my band in i am 126kgs and 171cms tall. I just want to have a healthy future with my fiance and be able to be the person that i have always wanted to be.

PS is anyone going in around same time as me i would love to chat

Re:Dr Lillian Kow Reply to this message
Hi all
My name is Sue, I'm having the lap band done by Dr Kow on 3/8/09 at Flinders Private. I'm a bit anxious about it, so it is really reassuring to be able to read about other peoples experiences, which sound mostly positive. I've heard good reports too from other patients at Dr Kows waiting rooms. Belinda could you ring Dr Kow and let her know your situation? Maybe she could bring yr surgery forward? Maybe she is dicated to by the public system tho? Good luck, I hope you get it sooner and that it goes well. I'm lucky, I haven't had to wait too long, I had my first appt with Dr Kow in May. My main concern with the surgery is that I've seen 3 people have the surgery, lose weight and then regain it all. But that was them not me, so hopefully I will be different. Good luck to you all, and thanks for sharing your experiences.
Sue

Hi
I put in a public referral to Dr Kow 10months ago.
I was wondering what the waiting times are like?
Also is there anyway i can be bumped up somehow as i am having problems with my hips, back and feet due to my weight which has forced me to leave work and become unemployed.

Re:Dr Lillian Kow Reply to this message
duties. And it wasn't to bad. I just seemed to be struggling for energy and felt quite light headed at times. The trick is i think to start drinking liqids as early in the morning as u can and just continue drinking them all day. Those vitamin waters you can get are quite, they seem to really pick me up. When i left hospital Lillian comes to check that your alright to be discharged and asked me to make a double appointment with her and the dietcain to go on to purred foods 4 weeks after surgery. So your ment to be on liquids for that time. I rang up the first monday after my op and the closet appointment i could get was after xmas. I was so angry because that would mean id be on liquids on xmas day. So i rang back and spoke to the manager and they have managed to squeeze me in. So make sure you make those appointments early. I am now 9 days post op and im really over liquids, i can drink bigger amounts now with no problem and my dietitians appointment is another week and an half away. I must say the weight is slowly coming off. Let me know if ive left any thing else out that u might want to know.
Thanks
Renee

Re:Dr Lillian Kow Reply to this message
HI there/ Sorry for the late reply. The op went really well. I only had to wait around at teh hospital (Calvery) for less than an hour and i was straight into surgery. Which helped with teh nerves. Then the next thing i knew i woke up in recovery. I wont lie, i felt like a truck had run over my stomach but as soon as you wake up all the nurses run over with pain meds and that quickly sovles the problem. I got wheeled back to my room to be given more pain meds (all through my drip) By that stage my mouth was so so dry from fasting and the anesetic i think and all i wanted was a sip of water to coat my mouth and the nurses refused and said that i had to wait for the surgeon. Thank god i bought vaseline for my lips, that basically saved me. The nurses came back to say im a loud a couple of ice chips to suck on but im not allowed liquid till the next day. All night they come and change your iv bags and give you numerous antibiotics also through your iv so i coudlnt really sleep. My stomach was to sore to lie on my side but i managed to use a pillow to prop up on my side a bit which helped. Then next day i had short on bursts of nausouser which i think was from lack of sugur and Lillian agreed to let me have some cordial which made me feel almost 100% better than i did. Day 2 i mostly spent sleeping and coming off the groggy feeling. I was discharged on the day 2 about lunch time. They only gave me panadol to go home with which didnt really cut it. I went and got some panadiene forte and maxalon just in case. As far as liquids go i didnt really feel thirsty and i really struggled to drink them without feeling full. I have 5 little stab wounds (as i call them) 4 are about 1cm long and the main port one is about 4cm just below my breast bone. They are so tiny and the 4 little ones are almost all healed now. Around the port area is still quite swollen and tendy to touch but its getting better every day. My job is quite pysical but i went back to work today, just on light .. ...

Re:Dr Lillian Kow Reply to this message
Haha yeh! One week today! Thats really good about your appointments. I had the last one yesterday with the dietician and he is lovely. I couldnt stop laughing. Because im a little on the light side compared to other ppl (BMI 33) he said i didnt have to do any kind of optifast diet beofre hand. But im going to kick start things with it any way since its only a week. The dietician just went over the pre and post op diets and what he expects your to lose and in what time frame. It was really good to put it all in perspective. Well all the best with your and ill talk to you on the other side!

Re:Dr Lillian Kow Reply to this message
Hi Renee,
Sorry for the late reply, I have been busy at work. Thanks for all your info it is great, really helpful. I phoned yesterday and still have my appointment with Lillian on the 14th Nov but later in the day so I only have to stay over one night, then the receptionist made my appointments with Dr Lorenzen and the dietician all on the same day on the 27th Nov which is great.Yes I guess it is all these other little costs which add up and I can get the other smaller tests done locally. It is all happening really quick but I will wait until early Jan to the have the operation, your date is coming around quick makes me nervous just thinking about it as I have never been in hospital before and never had anything wrong with me, touch wood!! Talk to you again

Re:Dr Lillian Kow Reply to this message
Hi angela!
I had my appointment with Dr Lorenzen ( we call him Bernie) He was pretty funny, this was for my pre op appointment. He basically went over all me medical history, weighed, measured, blood pressure, temperature, reflexes and these sorts of things. He is the one that does the fills after the operation which was reassuring or and he said that id need to go for an ecg. I wish they had told me about this when i went for my ultrasound several weeks ago! Any way ill have to do that tomorrow before my dieticans appointment. Oh the other thing that im abit annoyed with is tomorrow i have to pay the $2200. And in my first appointment i was told it included every thing. Yet today i had to pay for the gp appointment with a cost of $110 although i get $90 back its still money i have to find. And i dont know about the ecg and how much that will be either. Tomorrow i will go and find out before paying the $2200 and let you know how that goes. Did u have any luck organizing your appointments?

Hi Renee,
Thanks heaps for all the info. I will give them a call and see if I can schedule some of the appointments together to make it easier. Looks fairly straight forward and I would be interested to see how your appointments go next week if you don't mind letting me know. A 3 month turn around would suit me to a tea. Will let you know how I get on. Thanks again
Cheers Angela

Re:Dr Lillian Kow Reply to this message
(sorry i ran out of room n sorry its so long)

So basically this is how Lillian does things

-First App with Lillian
-Second App with Lillian (op date, endo date, other dates)
-Endoscopy/blood tests with Lillian & her lovely new zeland anesthesiologist
-Dietitian app
-Bariatric Gp App

Then the next time ill see Lillian is the day of the surgery on the 24th of october. Because i wanted my surgery sooner rather than later i agreed to go to Calvery in North Adelaide. Which i dont mind considering ive had the rest of the appointments at Flinders. I had my first appointment on the first of august, so from start to end it will only really be about three months. Some people like to take there time but the waiting is driving me crazy. Oh i better tell you my stats, i am 170cm and 98kgs. They say my BMI is fairly low only being 34 but they feel i could benefit greatly from the surgery. I have been overweight since the age of 12 and my parents had me on all sorts of diets and xenical which proved to be my most sucessful attempt but a year and a half on medication was enough and as soon as i came of the weight just pured back on just like the rest of my diets. As i said my mother in law had it done 6 years ago and couldn't recomend it higher enough to me. These days it is as routinely done and Lillian can be up to doing 20 patients a week. Any way I hope i have covered every thing. Let me know if you have any other questions and ill let you know how my appointment's go next week
Thanks Renee

Re:Dr Lillian Kow Reply to this message
Hi there.
I am only 19 and im glad ive chosen to take a stand now and lose this weight so i can finally get control of my life. The first appointment is basically a question and answer session. They will weigh you and get your bmi. She will tell you then if your going to be eligble or not and go through your history and why you want the surgery. Apparently she does this with all her patients and she gets you to go away and come back to make sure you are really serious. Then at the second app. she got out all the paperwork and made sure i wanted ot go though with it and admision packs. She likes to plan every thing back wards from the op date. So she will pick an op date that's suitable with you. She will give you a slip of paper that u take away for an ultrasound. You can go where ever you like and they send the pictures to her offices. (By the way that is one other cost i have come across so far that isnt included in her $2200 package. It cost me $180 but i got $90 from medicare) Lillian will also book you in for an endoscopy. It is a day procedure although i was in and out in less than 3 hours. Considering i have never so much as had an injection i was a piece of cake. They will also take blood from you at the endoscopy so they only have to use the one needle. Then at the reception when you leave her office you have to book in for 2 other appointments. One is with a Dietitian to talk about pre and post operative diets and so forth and the other appointment is you pre op with the bariactric doctor which apparently is about pain meds, diets, what they expect you to lose and long term goals. I have those to appointments next week. So ill let you know how those go. The staff at Lillians office are very nice and last time i was there, there was a lady from out of town and they managed to sceduhal all her appointments in one day, but its up to you.

Re:Dr Lillian Kow Reply to this message
Hi there,
I am getting banded on the 24th of October. Just over 2 weeks now! Im getting pretty excited. My mother in law was banded by Lillian 6 years and has lost 110 kilos and now wears a size 8. She is a RN and couldn't recommend Lillian highly enough. She is really lovely Doctor and the only female Lap Band surgeon in Adelaide. (As far as i know!) Being a larger girl that is already comfortable with my weight i instantly felt more comfortable taking about it with Lillian. Her whole team are very lovely and friendly. The only draw back on the whole expercence is she is very busy and some times there is a bit of a wait to see her because she works from both Flinders Private and Calvery. If you have any other questions let me know id be happy to answer any questions you may have. I know how many questions i had!
Thanks
Renee

Hi,
My friend was banded by her about 4 years ago and was very happy with her. She has since changed doctors, but mainly due to waiting periods and distance from her etc. She does get a bit shirty if you don't lose weight from what I've heard from my friend.
Hope all goes well,
xxx
